While her mother visited the information desk, Marjorie sat beside her father and pouted. These last few months had been stressful and filled with tension, and now—as far as she was concerned—it was about to get a whole lot worse. “Why can’t you just come with?” she asked sullenly. Dedalus sighed, his expression guilty. “It’s not safe for me to go with you. We talked about this, dearest—you two will go ahead, and I’ll follow later. I’ll meet up with you once I can make sure that I won’t lead them right to you.” Marjorie rolled her eyes. “That’s stupid, and I hate it.” He frowned, falling silent. What could you really say to that? “I’m sorry you feel that way. I love you.” He reached over to place a reassuring hand on her shoulder, but Marjorie pulled away and moved a couple of seats over to sulk in peace. “I hate you,” she said. Dedalus looked as though he’d been struck. Fortunately, Justine returned to interrupt their parting conversation. “We have to go,” she said stiffly, reaching for her daughter’s hand. She gave her co-parent a withering look. “Goodbye, Dedalus.” He tried to smile despite it all; it was set to be the last time he’d see them in some time, and he didn’t want Marjorie to remember a sad dad when she thought back on this moment. “I don’t believe in goodbyes. So I’ll just say see you soon.” he said, trying his best to feign even a smidgen of his usual faux optimism. Justine and Marjorie did not respond. They turned and walked away. At the last moment, however, Marjorie turned and ran back to her father and gave him one final hug despite her obvious anger. “I’ll see you soon,” Marjorie said. |
