WHO: Nora & Rhys Cadwallader.
WHAT: An electrical storm.
WHEN: Tonight! Saturday, March 17th.
WHERE: The Gentle Green, Wales.
WARNINGS: Nah.
“What counts as a ‘large and secure place’—do you think this is okay? Do you think this is safe?” Rhys asked worriedly, flinching involuntarily as the sky lit up, followed by the boom of thunder directly overhead. “You should go inside!” "You should hurry up and say the incantation and drink the potion so we can both go inside!" Nora's voice raised up over the sudden gusts of wind. The rain was picking up too, and her umbrella charm could only do so much to keep them both (somewhat) dry. "Before we both get struck by lightning!" Rhys nodded; she had a point. “Okay, okay, okay, let’s get this over with,” he said hurriedly, placing the tip of his wand over his heart just as he had done faithfully in the weeks leading up to this final step. He took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves despite the growing storm. “ Amato Animo Animato Animagus,” he recited finally, then reached for the potion. Another flash of lightning, closer this time, and Nora ducked instinctively as the thunder echoed around them. She watched as Rhys drank down the whole foul vial, waiting for any changes to his appearance, demeanor, posture, anything. After a hesitant moment, she shouted over the rain again, "How do you feel?" Rhys wrinkled his nose, sticking out his tongue after he’d finished the potion. “Honestly? I don’t feel any diff—” He was cut off in mid-sentence when he suddenly expanded into something massive and bear-like, followed by morphing again into something smaller and shaggier—a badger? A wolverine?—followed instantly by turning into something even smaller and fluffier right as another flash of lightning illuminated the sky, temporarily blinding them both. When the sky returned to normal, however, it revealed only Rhys, sitting on the ground with his long legs sprawled out in front of him, and not a creature in sight. He blinked confusedly. “What just happened?” he asked. "What was that?" came Nora's overlapping question. She'd dropped the umbrella charm, switching instead to be ready to stun … whatever was happening to Rhys. When he was just (recognizably) her husband again, she knelt beside him and, without asking, started checking his vitals. "Take a deep breath." Rhys did as he was told. “I think I’m fine,” he assured her, though he checked all of his limbs just to be sure. He held up his hands and wiggled his fingers, which—thankfully—still appeared to be regular human fingers. “Did I turn into something? Or did I just imagine that?” "Something definitely happened," Nora said. She checked his pulse; slightly elevated, but nothing concerning. Hers was probably the same. More lightning, more thunder, and the rain had soaked them both through by now. "C'mon. Let's get back home and back inside. We can try to figure out what happened when we're warm." |
