WHO: Lucrezia Borgin & Joe Bell. WHAT: Introducing a purist to the wonders of Game of Thrones. WHEN: Friday, January 26th in the evening. WHERE: Joe's humble abode. WARNINGS: N/A.
Lucrezia had never seen anything like television before now. Yes, she could watch videos on her phone, but they paled in comparison to what was happening on the flatscreen. She was in awe of the entire production, from the actors to the various scenery, and her interest in it had literally kept her on the edge of the couch in anticipation.
“I can’t believe they do this all without magic,” she said as glanced at Joe. “It’s very clever.”
"Well, it's CGI magic," Joe replied, without missing a beat, but his attention didn't waver from the screen. He had almost forgotten how young and happy the characters were, and sighed to himself. He finally glanced over at his guest, Lucrezia Borgin, and both of his brows shot up. "That's computer-generated imagery, that is. Basically, it means not all is real and some things are done using the computer."
And then he nodded, before adding: "Very clever, indeed."
Lucrezia glanced at the screen before turning her attention back to her gracious host. “They do all this in one of those computer boxes?” Her family had always made Muggles out to be dimwitted at best, but what was appearing on the screen seemed to prove otherwise. “Does every show use... CGI?”
"Not every show, but a fair amount of them do, yes." Joe gave her an actual smile, a little amused that a Borgin could be so willing to learn about things that purists weren't exactly familiar with. It was a little heartwarming, he had to admit. "And if there is a good budget, then they invest more in CGI, which makes the show even better. Wait until dragons show up for this one," he nodded towards the screen, with a grin. "It's unbelievably good."
“Do they look anything like real dragons?” Lucrezia asked with an amused look on her face.
"No, they're more like wyverns, but they're close enough, I'd say!" Joe knew he sounded a bit more enthusiastic than an average person probably should have been, but it was exciting to find a non-Game of Thrones-watcher to impress.
Biting her bottom lip, Lucrezia thought over this before nodding her head. A wyvern made sense. Not quite a dragon, though they did fit the ferocious look that she supposed the Muggle creators of the show wanted. “I think they would make a nice addition even if it isn’t technically correct,” she said. “Are they going to show up soon?’
Joe shook his head, but because apparently they were going to discuss the show instead of watching the show, he grabbed the remote and paused the show. "They make a very brief appearance at the end of the season because that's when they hatch," Joe explained. "So you don't really see their ferocity for quite awhile, but you see the bond that they have with Daenerys. Er… that's Khaleesi." It was hard keeping up with all the names this early on.
“I’m starting to feel like I’m going to need to write this all down in order to keep track of everything...” Somehow, this show felt like it had more characters than any of the books she read. “Or at the very least who is related to who and in what way.”
"I highly suggest you watch the first couple of episodes over a few times because it can get a wee bit overwhelming, yes," Joe nodded, as he wrinkled his nose and glanced over at her. "I read the books before so it was a bit easy for me, but I know that it can get quite confusing."
Lucrezia nodded her head as she thought over his suggestion. “Can I get them on my phone? I don’t have a television or one of those computer boxes at my flat.” Perhaps she should just read the books first.
Joe nodded in response and smiled. "Yeah, you'll need a subscription to HBO and the app on your phone, but then you'll be able to watch it. It's a reasonable price, I think." He paused for a moment and wondered whether he should be nicer, but he really didn't know Lucrezia that well and sharing passwords seemed so personal…
"I could help you out and set you up with that, if you'd like?" he added, after a few seconds.
“I don’t know if I need to right now,” Lucrezia answered after a moment. The idea had seemed simple at first, but once he mentioned getting a subscription and paying a reasonable price it seemed like things might become a bit complicated. “Maybe I could just read the book? It’s the same, right?”
Joe considered the question for a moment, as though his answer would really make a difference in the world. He inhaled slowly, and pursed his lips, and finally exhaled loudly. "Well, season one is pretty on par with the first book. But things kind of change after awhile. I suppose you could read the book!" he finished after a moment. "I don't have it with me, it's at my parents' house, but it won't be difficult to find a copy, I'm sure."
Lucrezia nodded. “I think the book would be a good place to start!” If nothing else, it would prevent her from having to worry about how to pay a Muggle movie service. “I’m sure I can find a bookstore that carries it.”
"Yeah, it's pretty popular," Joe nodded. "And if I happen to find my copy before you do, you can borrow it." A few seconds later, he asked, "So what do you think of the show so far?"
“I like it!” Sure, she had nothing to compare it to, but that didn’t bother Lucrezia. “I can see why shows on the television are a popular thing.”
"It's one of the best shows that are on right now," Joe replied, with a big grin. Even though he wasn't sure that she would be interested in anything else, he was pretty excited at the prospect of introducing more television shows to Lucrezia, and perhaps, she would get into them just as much as he (and others) were.
He pointed the remote at the screen, and glanced at Lucrezia with a curious glance. "Want to keep going?" Without waiting for her reply, he hit the play button once again, while the episode continued to play.
“Of course,” she answered before giving him a smile and flopping back against the couch.
