Back in history the Republican party wasn't the second party. Or the third. Or even the fourth. It was a fifth party.
The fact that our country has developed into a two party system is more an example that people are too afraid to "waste their votes" than to vote for someone they actually feel will make a difference.
If you don't agree with either of your choices, why waste your vote on them? It's more wasteful to vote for someone who has a chance of winning that you disagree with, than to vote for someone with no chance of winning that you agree with whole heartedly.
Sure, that person may not have a chance of winning, but if the battle is so lopsided, than one vote won't make a difference anyways.
