Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:keiichi, renju

Who: Renju, Keiichi.
What: Checking up.
Where: Keiichi's dorm.
When: The day after the dungeon, early afternoon.
Why: Obligation?

Unfortunately, getting clearance to enter the boys' dormitories was impossible. Equally unfortunately, Renju wasn't likely to be able to meet Keiichi anywhere else at this point--not in his condition, anyway. Fortunately, it seemed that it was an issue campus security paid relatively little attention to, and so she was able to sneak up without much trouble (besides the what am I doing, this is against the rules, it's not as if anyone's in danger this time playing on repeat in the back of her head).

Carefully balancing the large covered bowl in one hand, she rapped sharply on the door with the other. She considered herself lucky that she didn't have the memories associated with this place that Keiichi had with hers. This was bad enough as it was, after all.

"Coming," the voice called from inside the room. Ito Keiichi dragged himself to his feet, clad in his pajamas. He slid on a pair of fuzzy slippers. He didn't look too much the worse for wear: the top hid the slash-mark he'd been given, and with the exception of physical and emotional exhaustion, Paradise hadn't taken much of a toll.

Ironically, other people's dungeons had hurt him more physically than his own did.

Keiichi wobbled towards the door, and opened it, to find Sonozaki-san standing there, bowl in hand.

"Hello, Sonozaki-san," Keiichi managed, bracing himself on the doorframe. "You really didn't need to come.."

"I thought I should. You shouldn't have gotten up." Renju's expression shifted into a sharp, disapproving frown. This whole 'friends' thing was sort of new to her, and showing actual concern for people besides the 'would you quit being an idiot for all our sakes' variety was taking some getting used to.

She threw a nervous glance over her shoulder, craning her neck and peering around to make sure no one had seen her and that no one was going to get the wrong idea about any of this. Being here was bad enough... "May I come in for a few minutes? I know it's warm, but I brought some soup along." She indicated the bowl she'd brought along with a nod of her head; it was a rather large bowl, probably filled with the contents of most of a smallish pot, and she was thankful to be able to get it back in both hands.

"Of course," he replied. "Come on in."

What else was he going to say? She looked disapproving enough that he'd gotten up to begin with. It sort of made him think of his mother when she was upset at him.

He retreated towards his bed, lying back down in it as if to try and get her to be less cross with him. "And thank you. I do love soup."

With one last nervous glance, Renju set the soup bowl down on a nearby desk and closed the door behind her. If anyone else was around... well, nothing she could do about it now, anyway.

Rather than sit, she leaned back against the door, fiddling with the edge of her sleeve--even in summer, she was wearing a light cardigan, and the hem and the edges of the sleeves were starting to show a bit of wear and tear, probably from precisely what she was doing to it right now.

So, she was here. Now what? She'd always been an utter failure at small talk; she'd never seen the point. But just jumping straight to 'how much do you remember'/'how did it happen'/'why was everything named after you' seemed a bit much, even for her. It reminded her of how Tom had been, and still was to a lesser extent. "Um." It sounded sort of pathetic, but it broke the silence, at least. "H-how are you feeling?"

"I'm doing okay," Keiichi replied, shrugging his shoulders and looking up at her from the bed. "I've been more physically hurt from everyone else's dungeon. I'm just sort of...exhausted mentally and emotionally, I guess."

He did feel slightly self-conscious at the fact that she was seeing him in his pajamas. Not that they revealed anything, but...still.

"How about you? I hope my mind didn't traumatize you too much."

"I'm fine." Renju hadn't really been looking at him much, particularly since she'd come in, half-lost in some world of her own. The response was mostly automatic, from the same place that parroted 'I'm fine, Aoi-san' at any expression of concern from Misaki.

In this case, it was... well, if she were absolutely honest with herself, it wasn't really true. But that wasn't Keiichi's fault. Mostly. Only circumstantially.

"Exhaustion seems to be natural after that." Of course it was. You were facing down everything about you that you refused to admit; how would it not be? "I don't think I rested for as long as I should have after mine."

"With it over, I feel sort of like an idiot," he admitted, shaking his head. "Most of what I've been repressing is things I should have just...said somewhere along the way. If I'd done THAT, you wouldn't all have had to put up with the exaggerated, terrible version. I'd have been able to duck right back out after going in to hide, but..."

His voice trailed off. If only it had been that easy.

"..."

Renju took a long, slow breath, and finally directed her gaze at Keiichi. "The same is true for all of us, Ito-san. Or has been so far." She slumped back against the door, picking half-consciously at a loose thread. "Everything would be much easier if we could admit to what we hide. But... we can't."

There was another brief silence from her. "All the same," she admitted, "I hadn't expected that from you. Maybe a few parts of it, but not all." Then again, she hadn't really known what to expect, and this was the first time she'd really given it any thought. She still wasn't entirely sure if she should. It still felt as though she was intruding on something private, something she had no right to see.

It was Keiichi's turn to take a slow, deep breath. He held it for several seconds, before trying to respond.

"I wanted to lead the team. A lot more than I should have, and for too many of the wrong reasons in addition to all of the right ones." It was difficult to talk about this, primarily because Renju was the first person he had spoken to, and was also the first who'd probably understand.

"...you know what a joke Cooking Club is, don't you? I've always wanted to make it better, but nothing seems to work."

He was, Renju had to admit, more open and candid about it than she had been. But then, even his Shadow had been. Hers had said it wanted people to understand, but then it spoke in riddles and refused to properly explain itself to even her.

Rather than touch on the matter of leading the team, which would likely lead to a much more frustrating discussion than she wanted to deal with (she still wasn't sure how she felt about the subject, except that the team still needed one and she wasn't sure who she trusted to do it and do it right), she decided to go for the safer topic instead. She disliked admitting it, but there was no way she could disagree with his assessment of it.

"It--we should be able to get more funding somehow. Even the Tea Club manages to make do somehow." She'd never been in it, granted--one of the few clubs in Nanakamado she refused to go near; even she knew Yamakaji's reputation--but still. "Membership is the problem."

"I should talk to Yamakaji-san. I imagine she has a few secrets. Still, you're right, though." Keiichi frowned. "Most people just don't care for whatever reason. We're not Ikebana. Lord knows why most of the guys go there."

It was catty for Keiichi, but so be it.

"I need to come up with a way to attract more people to the club. People really would enjoy cooking if they gave it a try.
