Smoke on the Wate-- Er, Rooftop
Who: Kiriko, Shin
What: Introductions
Where: Nanakamado; Rooftop
When: Lunchtime.
Why: 'Cause we want to.

The door swung closed behind her and Kiriko narrowed her eyes. Something was Not Right on the roof of Nanakamodo; the scent of cigarette smoke invaded her nostrils and several scarcely-trampled butts littered the gravel, but the path they created led not to the fair-haired delinquent she had expected to meet here, but to a different boy entirely. The tall girl frowned. She hadn't realized anybody else had the audacity to smoke on the roof, so easily discoverable; everybody she knew took their "secret" smoke breaks in their respective bathrooms or in the shelter of some bushes behind the back lot.

Besides, if Reizo wasn't here, where was he? She hadn't seen him harassing anybody on the way upstairs... Either way, like hell she was going to waste her whole lunch hour tracking him down just to to annoy him under the pretense of passing presentation notes along... especially not with some curious new stranger to examine right in front of her.

"Hey," she called to the boy's back, "Has that troublemaker from first year, Shirai, passed through here?"

The answer probably wouldn't be of much use to her, but it was as good an opener as any - from where she was, she couldn't even tell if she'd ever seen this guy. Hopefully he was the type who turned around to answer questions.

He held his cigarette loosely between two fingers, a thin trail of smoke escaping from it. Having just inhaled from it, a larger cloud of smoke trailed out of his mouth as he rolled his head back to look at the girl who had called for him. Lips puckered slightly as he exhaled, he idly tapped the butt of his cigarette to get rid of the ashes before raising it to his lips once again.

"Reizo-chan?" Shin asked, taking a long drag and exhaling in one smooth breath. "Haven't seen him today, no."

He turned, moving to straddle the pipe he was currently sitting on. Smiling lightly, he brought the cigarette back to his lips and inhaled, embers burning brightly as he did so. She had called Reizo a troublemaker - what would she think of him smoking, if anything at all? Hopefully he wasn't about to get a health rant.

But just to be safe, he asked, "Is my little darling in trouble again?"

Because when faced with a bothersome solution, keeping the conversation on Reizo always seemed to shift the attention away from Shin.

It took a moment, but a look of recognition flashed over Kiriko's features. She had seen this kid before. She let her face settle back to neutrality as she scanned her mental databanks for what she knew just from his face and location. Third year, something in the back of her head told her. There was a name on the tip of her tongue. What had she heard about solitary third years hanging out on rooftops?

Before she could come to any answer, his words distracted her completely.

"Reizo-chan?" she spluttered in disbelief. Had she been drinking something she certainly would have choked on it. She was almost as gobsmacked as she was intrigued. Kiriko composed herself before speaking again.

"What do you mean, your little darling?"

She was certain she knew something, if she could just remember that name...

With a broad grin, he tapped his cigarette once again.

"Reizo-chan and I are best buds," Shin said, bringing the cigarette back up to his lips before squinting at the now shortened stick. With a disappointed look, he let it drop down to the ground, tapping one foot down to put the cigarette out. If this girl was still wandering around, then they must still have time left. Maybe enough for another cigarette? Taking his phone out of his pocket, he glanced at the time before putting it back and withdrawing a pack of gum instead. Taking a stick, he offered it to the girl as he continued. "He's absolutely precious, isn't he? But his attitude's not cute at all."

Unwrapping the gum with nimble fingers, he stuck the flat green piece into his mouth and chewed. Ah, if only gum could get rid of the smell of cigarette smoke. Not that people didn't already know he smoked; even the teachers did, but because he was in the obvious place none had ever been able to catch him. No, teachers looked in the bathrooms and bushes and everywhere but the roof.

Still, he smiled pleasantly at the girl. There was nothing like teasing Reizo, even if he wasn't there, to put Shin in a good mood.

"You want me to pass on a message when I see him?" Shin asked, always the willing helper.

Matsumoto, came that voice in the back of her head. Matsumoto Shin.

It was his offer to pass a message on that had tripped her memory; Matsumoto, Third Year, bit of a shady character, mostly known for being able to hook almost anyone up with almost anything. Rumoured to be the object of affection of one of the second year girls caught crying in the bathroom a few weeks ago.

And apparently extremely brazen or unafraid of word getting back to Reizo.

Silently, Kiriko congratulated herself on being so apt at picking out interesting characters. She didn't return the smile, but meandered to the fence nearby, leaning against it.

"No need. I need to deliver something to him, so a message wouldn't help. You're Matsumoto, right?"

Undeterred when she ignored his offer, Shin instead put the pack back in his pocket and resumed chewing his own piece of gum. Watching as she went over to lean against the fence, Shin blew a bubble idly. Sucking it back in when it popped, he looked back over at her.

"Matsumoto Shin, yeah. And who might you be?" he asked, before glancing over at her bag. Had to be something small if it could fit into her school bag. Maybe a box of chocolates or something? No, that couldn't be it - it wasn't even close to Valentine's Day. And as far as Shin knew, it wasn't Reizo's birthday either. Maybe... maybe she just liked him? What an interesting relationship that would be, Shin mused; this no-nonsense girl liking a troublemaker like Reizo. The arguments at the very least would provide ample entertainment for Shin.

"You're probably better off going directly to his class than looking for him," Shin suggested. "Just stick it on his desk or something if he isn't there."

"I'm in his class," she said with a frown. "And besides, telling me to look for a guy like that in class is kind of silly."

It irritated her somewhat that he didn't already know who she was - she could swear she was more popular than that! Then again, this guy seemed kind of spacey. Maybe he didn't pay attention to things like that.

"I'm Ikeda Kiriko. A first year."

She tipped her head up towards the sky, looking pointedly disinterested even as she thought of the best way to sort out exactly what Shin's deal was.

"I've heard of you, Matsumoto-san. I hear you're a 'problem solver.'"

"Ikeda Kiriko?" Shin repeated slowly, sounding like he was repeating the name just to see if he could say it, though in reality he was trying to come up with some information to match the name. Within moments, the name clicked and he snapped his fingers. "Right, right. You were top of your class for midterms, weren't you? You're quite the model student, Ikeda-san."

He smiled at her again before waving a hand as though to dismiss her claims. Not that they were false or anything, but it seemed so drab to slap a label on himself. And it sounded like he actually cared about people, when they called him things like that. Really, he just didn't want people in his space when he was in it and the best way to get rid of people was to usually listen to their problems rather than tell them to get lost. It may not be the quickest method, but for Shin it was definitely the easiest.

"I suppose I am," he said, smile thinning into a light smirk. "Do you need help with something?"

Not that he was volunteering himself or anything. No, he would never do that.

She eyed him. Was this kid mocking her? Well, after what he'd been saying about Reizo, she shouldn't be surprised. Either way, she was pleased to be remembered for something - not that acing the midterms had been particularly difficult...

"What kind of stuff do you 'help' with?"

Though she'd since turned her head, Kiriko was sizing him up out of the corner of her eye. He didn't really look like the type who'd have nothing to offer her but a carton of cigarettes, but the boy was certainly a few skips away from being proper and businessy about whatever he did. He didn't have a trenchcoat to hide anything in, but she supposed he did have pockets... How terribly disappointing it would be if he'd earned his reputation peddling the mundane like drugs or alcohol.

Kiriko paused mid-thought and considered that neither of those things were mundane, per-se, but all the same, she was holding out hope that a shady kid who hung out on rooftops would have a more creative racket.

Reclining back in what could be called a stretch, Shin gazed up at the sky as though looking for an answer before looking back down at Ikeda.

"It varies," he said finally with a shrug. "I won't sneak you alcohol and I won't give you a cigarette unless you show me you already smoke. I ca- won't help with anything illegal; I'm not about to risk my neck for some kid. No offense," Shin added quickly to placate her in case she was one of the sensitive types like Reizo. "If you need some cash, though, I can hook you up with a job. And if you need an ear, I won't spill your secrets." He rose his hand, pinky jutting out as he grinned. "I promise."

He paused, moving the hand to tap lightly on his chin. "I suppose if you need help with homework I could explain it, but you're probably better off asking one of the people that are signed up to tutor." Again, he paused before shaking his head lightly. "Though I doubt you need help if you scored as high as you did."

Looking at her thoughtfully, Shin wondered what it was she wanted. Did she use Reizo as an excuse to talk to Shin? Or did she simply get side-tracked once she realized who he was?

...tch, because that didn't sound like he thought of himself as a celebrity or anything.

No drugs or alcohol... That was smart at least, she supposed. On the other hand, with the way he was up on the roof smoking and calling Shirai "Reizo-chan," maybe it was surprising that he was deliberately avoiding trouble. Whatever he was doing, it was unconventional. Maybe he was going to make a career in a student counselling place or a job bank or something...? She still wasn't quite certain of what to think.

"How much do you charge, usually?" She kept her tone conversational and somewhat bemused, careful not to allow it to betray her curiousity.

Again, Shin shrugged lightly.

"Depends on what it is and how much effort I have to put into it," he said. "If you just need an ear, I won't charge, but if you're looking for something it'll cost you."

Blowing another bubble, he gazed at her and raised an eyebrow as it popped. Chewing it back into a tightly-packed mass, Shin wondered what was with all the questions. She was avoiding saying what she wanted, instead asking everything about how he operated his little business. She wasn't about to rat him to a teacher or something, was she?

"What is it you need?" he asked. "I won't say anything about it, if that's what you're worried about."
