Reizo was slumping back against the bench again, long legs crossed at the ankles and bread laid across his lap, crumbs sprinkled around it and growing every time he pinched off another piece to lob it at the fumbling circle of ducks. Wings fluttered noisily, ducks quacked and bit furiously at one another, and Reizo grinned so wide and hard that his cheeks began to hurt. It never failed to amuse him -- not the ducks biting and fighting each other over food, but of how achingly similar the whole scene was to what he saw in the civilized people of Japan every day. Everyone really was a fucking animal when you got down to it.
He turned his head towards the movement, grin slipping. If only they went through all the effort to look as good as Kondo, then maybe he could forgive them. He frowned at his classmate, head tilted to the side and savage scar fighting with the corner of his mouth, turning it lopsided. He tossed out another piece of bread, said goodbye to solemn peace, and threw a hand up in the air to get the girl’s attention.
“Oii, Kondo-chan,” he started, teeth clenched to keep himself from grinning or frowning. His grins were rarely friendly -- even when he practiced in the mirror just to see if they could be -- so something neutral was best to lure her over. At best he’d get some dirt about Ikeda or one of her boyfriends out of her, at worst he'd get to just look at her.
His hand came down with a resounding smack on the open part of the bench beside him, and he jerked his head to signal her to come over. He turned back towards the ducks to hurl more bread at the ducks. They’d almost calmed down, and that wouldn’t do.
