Who: Masaya and Open
What: Ice cream and hanging out
Where: KigaKiga Ice Cream Store
When: Summer vacation
Why: Masaya just wants some ice cream and conversation

Masaya had an hour to kill before practice, and had decided that with its air conditioning and mint chocolate chip, KigaKiga would be the best bet. The shop was busy (somehow, he had overlooked the fact that summer plus ice cream would equal more customers), but fortunately most of the people there were ordering cones and disposable bowls to-go, so there were still plenty of seats available inside.

As he waited in line, it occurred to him that he hadn't heard back from anyone about going out this weekend, and he pulled his phone out of his pants pocket to check if anyone had messaged him.

Nothing...oh wait, that was because his phone had been off. That helps, he thought, turning it on. After a moment of staring at it impatiently, willing a text alert to pop up, he put it back into his pocket - on silent, he could check again later - and stepped up to the counter to place his order - double scoop of mint chocolate chip, in a bowl. He wasn't going anywhere for a bit, and had time to sit in a window booth and savor the treat.

Misaki walked into the Kigakiga pulling at the sunglasses that she had on, and the head scarf. She only dared to venture in, after making sure Maeko wasn't at work this hour. She wasn't, and stood behind the tall boy who was playing with his cell phones.

She sighed loudly, a bit impatiant as she wanted to just sit down and eat. The pink haired freshman was in a mood for ice cream and just couldn't wait. She was bouncing on the balls of her feet to see what the hold up was, when the kid that was behind her bumped her in the back sending her bumping into the boy ahead of her.

"Oooph, sorry," Misaki quickly said and righted herself, hoping she didn't cause to much trouble.

Masaya turned at the bump, prepared to level the obnoxious guy he thought was behind him with a glare, but all he saw was a girl, hiding beneath a head scarf and sunglasses.

He raised an eyebrow. That was worth questioning.

"'S no problem...interesting fashion statement you've got there," he said, in a seemingly casual tone.

Misaki paused some and looked down, "Ah...thanks. I think you're up right now."

She motioned to the girl behind the counter who looked bored. Misaki pulled off the scarf and her pink hair hung over her shoulders as she took off the glasses and pocketed them. This wouldn't be too bad...right?

Some part of Masaya told him he shouldn't push it. She'd responded, and it should be done.

...But that part just didn't yell loud enough, because after paying for and receiving his bowl, he simply stepped aside and leaned against the counter, nodding at the now-uncovered girl (even without the disguise, she still didn't look familiar to him; could be a different year, then) and waited for her to finish ordering before he spoke.

"So interesting, in fact, that it makes me wonder: What do you have to hide from? You look ordinary enough to me."

"I was trying to avoid one of the workers here that used to be a friend of mine," Misaki said softly. She fingered her scarf some and swallowed, "I didn't want her to know it was me, but she would know it was me to easily. She's seen this scarf before and the glasses really don't hide much."

Misaki smiled at him softly, "I'm Aoi Misaki, 1-B, aren't you on the baseball team with Seiji-kun and Toshimi-chan?"

Huh. Everyone has their problems, he thought. Although Masaya didn't see what avoiding the person would do. If he hid from everyone that had ever been pissed at him, he might never come out of his room (which was a fate worse than death in and of itself). "They've been giving you problems, huh. Got a minute to talk about it?"

He nodded in the direction of an open booth. It had nothing to do with him, but it was someone to talk to. Not to mention she had a nice smile.

"I'm Inoue Masaya from 2-B, and yeah, I'm on the team. Baseball's kind of my reason for going to school these days."

"Oh ah sure," Misaki nodded. It was nice to talk to someone who actually cared, though she wasn't sure wht to make of the boy.

"Mint chocolate chip, and swirlled fudge, orders up," the boy at the pick up area said as Misa fished out money and paid for both. She smiled some.

"If you're going to listen, the least I can do is pay for your order." Misaki explained. This wasn't like she was buying him it, it was just being fair. He didn't have to listen, and she wanted to be nice.

Taking a booth far in the back, where she was sure that Maeko, if she walked by, wouldn't see her, Misaki sat down and took a bite out of her ice cream, "It's nice eating with a friendly face for once Inoue-san. What do you mean by it's the reason for you going to school these days."

Masaya smiled, close-lipped, at her accepting his offer. And paying for his ice cream, too? Hey, whatever worked for her. He should be friendly more often, though it felt odd to be playing the concerned nice guy. So not his style.

"You didn't have to, but thanks," he said as they headed towards the booth. Sitting down, he took a generous spoonful of ice cream, chewing on the spoon slightly as he thought.

"That's good to hear, Aoi-san. Why baseball? What else is there at school? A bunch of dorks in my grade, and classes that I could sleep through and still pass. Not exactly a big draw.

"But enough about me - tell me the situation with your backstabber. You know you want to..." he teased, waggling the spoon at her with a smirk.

"Well Baseball I guess has a lot of good things going for it. Like teamwork, dedication, that sort of thing," Misaki said and paused and took a spoonful and thought a moment, "They're not all dorks. Most I'm sure are really nice people. Like Seiko-chan, and...Keiichi-kun, and ah...well Toshimi-chan, and you have cool people like Masami-chan and Renju-chan in your class."

She laughed some, "I still have trouble going to science class and gym class. I don't see the point of either unless you're going to be a famous Physical education teacher, or a science professor or Doctor."

Misaki paused and scooped up another mouthful, "She didn't backstab me, apparently I was the one at fault. I was friends with her since middle school, back then we weren't friends, but I got hurt. People misundersood what happened, thought I had done something bad to myself, and my friend wound up thinking the same thing. That's why she became my friend, out of guilt. She thought she was the one behind it, and I didn't realize she didn't know the truth, untill about two years ago. Only I didn't tell her the truth back then, and well, apparently she saw it as a huge lie and a afront to her, so she does't want to see me...and basically hates me now."

Misaki smiled some, "So I'm trying to forget about her as best I can, though it's really not working since we're on the same club, and well, I can't exactly quit it."

Masaya shrugged at her all-too-kind endorsements. "If you say so. I mean, Nawanaka-san's not bad, and I could get along with the rest if I had to..." He studied his reflection in his spoon, contemplating why he should tell her any more, and came up with nothing. "I'm kind of sick of everything at this point," he murmured, more to himself than to her.

The statement brought up a bitter, acidic taste in his throat, and he shoveled down ice cream trying to push it back. When he looked back up, he went on.

"It sounds like she's trying to blame you for stuff she did in the first place. Not much of a friend. Yeah, you might not have told her the truth, but who makes friends out of pity in the first place?" He took another bite, closing his eyes to savor it. Food of the gods in front of him, and here he was lecturing some girl about her personal life instead of enjoying it. "And if she could turn on you so easily, you must not have been so tight in the first place. You're better off not wasting time on someone like that.

"And that's a shame about the club," he added as an afterthought.

"Sick of everything?" Misaki nodded, "I know that feeling all to well lately. Life seems to be throwing bad...what is it, curve balls, and you keep swinging but you can't hit them. Or something like that. Sorry, I'm not good with explaining things."

"You...are you from around here oringnally? Iburi's kind of a big town." Misaki asked and took a spoonful.

"I don't know, I should have told her a long time ago, but I got scard," Misaki said slowly. "She was there for me when I really needed a friend, and protected me." Misaki looked at him, "I didn't think it was out of pity, maybe it was. You're really a smart person it seem s Inoue-senpai."

At this comment Misaki burst out laughing, "It's not like I wanted to be part of it, it just happened and I didn't want to see anyone..." she stopped, this was getting far to close to talking about things she shouldn't. She settled for just saying, "Anyone in trouble like before. I'm to soft, Or so Shirai-kun says."

She took a mouthful and ate, "Mmm, how's the Mint chocolate Chip?"

Masaya chuckled at her metaphor - or an attempt at one, at least. "Exactly like that,"

"I've always lived in Iburi, what about you?" He muddled his spoon around in the remainder of his ice cream - most of it was melted now, he'd been talking so much. That wasn't like him; he couldn't say he'd found anyone worth talking to in awhile. But she was nice, and she didn't judge anyone, it seemed. The antithesis of himself, he thought, and it wasn't near as annoying as he thought it would be.

Not that he would have said it out loud, but she had...a few qualities he admired, even if he thought he'd never be able to emulate them himself.

"You think I'm smart...?" he laughed to himself, and shook his head. "Thanks, I guess."

"There's nothing wrong with being soft; in some ways, it makes you better than half the people in this world. As long as you can stand up for yourself when you need to. Anyway, try not to tie yourself in knots over this - you can't make her get over herself." And you probably have tons of other friends, anyway.

He did a double-take at the mention of Shirai Reizo. He'd seen the guy a few times and heard enough rumors to know that he wasn't anyone he expected Aoi-san to be hanging out with, even if he'd only been talking to her for a few minutes. "Wait...what are you doing hanging out with Shirai-san?" He took a lick of his soupy spoon while he waited for the answer. "And the mint is delicious, as always."

Misaki smiled at the chuckle and it warmed her up more. Something she had not felt in a while. Relaxing some she giggled, "Baseball as a metaphor for life. I think I remember reading somewhere about a painter that was working with an animation company who was going to use that idea in a film but it never was. Go figure."

Misaki watched him thoughtfully trying to remember if she'd seen him around town. Perhaps she did, but never had the chance to equate a name to the face, so it just stayed in her sub concious. She nodded as she nibbled on the ice cream, "Lived here all my life. My mother and father are both Professors at the University here."

Misaki smiled and fiddled with her melted ice cream, "Well most people seem to have more sense then I do, so...I tend to admire people who are honest and just say what they mean. So, yes, I do think you are smart. Why the thanks though? Don't you think you are?"

She sighed some, "Not when it means that you're told that you do things that could be seen as vulger or that you pay for your friendships. I used to do that a lot, but I'm trying to stop now." Why was she telling him so much? Maybe because he was someone that wouldn't judge her and wouldn't view her as something annoying. They could easily part ways and never speak to one another again. Though she hoped that wasn't the case.

"It's not true though, I...I'm not very good at standing up for myself. Never was really, I...I tended to rely on her a lot, because she was logical and knew what she was doing. People said she defined herself by me, but...honestly, I defined myself by her more. Because she was there, I...I was never really afraid of falling and now...I guess the training wheels are gone and I'm scared the bikes going to fall over and I'm going to break something that I can't fully fix." Misaki looked at the soup. "It's silly I know, but she was the first, and really only friend, I ever had. She told me I make best friends all the time, but...that's not really true. I'm just nice to people, I don't mean it when I say best friends, because that's what she was to me."

Misaki laughed, "I must sound like a rather whiney person now. I'm sorry. Ah..." She paused, "Well he's in my class with me and once in a while I'll catch him on the roof. He calls me a rabbit for some reason." She grinned, "I've never tried mint before. I'll trade you some fudge ice cream soup for some melted Mint?"

"Figures I live here my whole life, and there are still people I don't know." Now that he thought about it, Masaya could almost convince himself that he'd seen her around before. Walking at Skypark, maybe, or passing each other in the halls at school... "I like Iburi well enough, but I'm ready to move on. I bet you love everything about it, though." He gave her a small smile. "Seem like the type,"

His face twitched unconsciously at her question of whether he thought he was smart or not. No was his emphatic reply inside, but he wasn't about to say that out loud.

"It's...not something I hear often, is all." More like ever. He looked away, feeling for the phone in his pocket, wondering how to turn the conversation away from him.

"You look like you get jerked around a lot," he said bluntly. "I mean, you're nice, so I guess people would take advantage of that. If you ever have a problem with anyone..." he trailed off, not sure where he was going with it. "I mean, I don't care who gets pissed off at me, so I'll talk to anyone for you." He scratched the back of his neck, feeling like an idiot for blurting that out. What was he doing to himself, and why? For some girl he barely knew? "But that defeats the purpose of you trying to stand up for yourself, doesn't it?"

"I don't mind listening, really. You're not boring or annoying like the people I'm always around." Not much, anyway. And that explained it with Shirai - obviously they couldn't be anything more than classmates, accquaintances at best.

Masaya held up his spoon, poised and ready. "And I would love to. There are few things greater in the world than ice cream and baseball, after all."

"Parts of it I love, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't want to travel some," Misaki admitted. "Get a better view of the world. It would be fun, mostly. I don't think I would want to stay away forever, but I wouldn't mind coming and going. There are things here that are great...and then things that I'd like to distance myself from."

Misaki pushed her hair back and chuckled, "Where would you want to go if you could?"

She nodded, "Yes, I used to not mind it so much, now...sometimes it gets annoying. Ah, you really don't have to! Honestly, I...I need to learn to take care of things on my own right? But...I'll keep it in mind if I get in over my head okay?" She smiled for him and chuckled some, "Yes, but it's very chivlious of you to offer. So thank you."

"Well thanks, I...I'm never sure what to talk to people about because a lot of my likes, my family...well mostly my mom, see as dumb, so I usually let the other person choose the topic." Misaki explained. "So what sort of topics would interest you?"

Misaki scooped some fudge swirl and put it in his spoon, "Try it. It's really rather good." She laughed, "Well I don't know a lot about baseball, but if the cheer squad is going to be cheering them on, then I should learn more about it. And Ice cream is better then the elixer that the gods in legends had."

"There are some things I would miss about Iburi if I left," Masaya said after a long moment, leaning back in the booth and bending one leg so that it was resting on top of the other, calf over knee. "The parks, some of my friends...but not enough to stop me from going. I'd go anywhere if it meant I could be my own man, y'know? Some place where I could do extreme sports and meet some new people wouldn't hurt, but the thing that appeals to me most about leaving town is the opportunity to start over in a place where no one would know me. I think Australia sounds nice."

He winced inwardly at both his suggestion and her reaction. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Why did he always promise things he couldn't deliver? I'll be a true friend, I'll never talk smack about you, I'll be your white knight. Was he that desperate to be liked?

"You're welcome," was all he said, scared he would try to take it back - or make an even worse promise - if he said any more on it.

"So? You like it, don't you? Then it's important. When my mom gives me crap about choosing baseball over school, I just ignore her. She does it a lot, so we don't talk a lot."

"Um, you know I like baseball and not much else. I play video games sometimes, but I'm not very good at them. Like, it's embarrassing, I go on Matsuri Online and I have no clue what to do with myself. I work out when I can. I don't like to be indoors if I can help it. Unless there's central air and it's roasting outside." He gestured around the store for reference. "What do you do that everyone else finds so boring?"

Masaya accepted his spoon, laden with fudge swirl, and popped it in his mouth. "Mmm. It's hard to go wrong with any kind of ice cream." He took Aoi-san's spoon and dipped it in his own mint, offering it back for her to try.

Misaki nodded in agreement, "The parks would be something I would miss. Not the traffic though, or the noise...I always thought of going some where, running away, but...I could never decide where to go, or where home would feel like. But I know what you mean. My Mother would never let me go though, she'd say that I would only wind up wishing that I could come back, since I'm not able to cope on my own, or something like that." Misaki looked up at the light over the booth and then back at him, "Australia huh? If you go there what would you do? Surf?"

Misaki just nodded and kept a smile on her face, "Yeah there's something I really love doing, it's just that I...well I'm starting to worry that it really is not worth as much as much as I make it out to be. It's...Fashion, I like designing clothing. Ha, your mother sounds a lot like mine, she's not a scientest too is she?"

"Really? I play too, Matsuri, I'm a healer there. Though I haven't been going on much recently. If...If you want we can dungeon together some time." Misaki smiled, "Or we can always play extreme frisbee, ah...but I think you would need other players for it."

"thank you," Misaki said taking it and tasted, "Muuummm it's really good! I think I might want to mix fudge with some mint next time."

"...Are you sure that's not my mother at your house? Because they're beginning to sound scary alike. Except for the fact that my mom's just a housewife; I wish she had a job that required her to be out a lot, so she wouldn't have so much time to ride me about my life." Masaya nodded, a bit of a smile coming back to his face after his sudden tirade. "Yeah, Australia. Surf, sun, and scuba diving are my top three favorite things about it. I mean, yeah, there's a giant hole in the ozone layer directly above it, but I can wear sunscreen."

"Fashion, huh?" Masaya's expression darkened again at this, turning into an almost scowl, though his tone stayed even. There's someone you would have loved to meet, then. Too bad I scared him away a long time ago. But that wasn't something he discussed with anybody, so he forced himself to unclench his jaw and go on. "Don't give yourself that negative talk; I can't stand people who do that all the time. I..." He looked away, plopping his empty spoon into his mouth while he tried to decide what to say. "...I'm not good at inspiring people. But just stick with it if it's what you like. Did that sound good?"

"Um, I'd like to dungeon some time. But I'm telling you, I really suck. I don't even get into groups half the time because I'm so inexperienced I feel like I'm dragging everyone else down. What's your username on there? Extreme Frisbee is more my game, but we would need more people for that. If you're interested, I can probably get some people together - guys and girls, so you wouldn't get completely stomped on. Put a bunch of guys together and it just gets crazy competitive - that's not something you'd wanna deal with."

(OOC: How long have they been talking, you think? Because eventually he'll have to get on to baseball practice, I just didn't want to cut you off.)

(OOC: Have him look at the time and and she can walk with him there if you still want them to talk.)

Misaki giggled some at this and smiled, "I wish she was a housewife, instead of a professor, then maybe she would calm down and not be so invested in 'going' places with her career. Or my dad could stay home. Though he's scared of my mom. Sounds like you have a hand full at your house." She blinked, "There is? I heard something about that, is it really big? What do you like the most about surfing?"

"I try not to, it's just a bit scary when you're still trying to figure things out. Mom wants me in a field that will make money," She grinned at him and nodded, "It sounded good. It's not like those speeches you see in Manga, but it suits you. I redesigned the baseball uniforms, but I'm a bit nervous to show them off."

I'm surprised that he didn't notice the negetive talk coming from Seiji-kun then, Misaki thought as she ate. And held the spoon in her mouth a moment then pulled it out, "Usagi, simple name really. And it's no problem I like working with people that aren't totally into the game, some can be really mean when they forget that it's just for fun."

"Could you? That would be a lot of fun. I played once with my brother and his friends, but...I think I got hit in the head and they had to call the game," She tried to remember. "Oh I've seen competiton before in gym class. Ito-sensei makes it very easy for that to happen."

Masaya blinked at her. "Yeah, it's kind of huge, I think. That's why they're always so paranoid about sun protection down there. ...Maybe I'll stay in Iburi for a little while longer after graduation. I haven't actually ever gone surfing, just seen videos of it, but I like the water a lot. I haven't gone swimming near enough as I'd have liked to this summer, and my parents canceled our trip to the beach this year."

"Really? What were your plans for the uniforms? I like what we have fine, but I'd still like to see 'em," he said enthusiastically, getting on his usual excited roll whenever baseball was involved.

"My name on Matsuri is the same as my school journal - play_ball. ...I'm not really creative, and I don't spend too much time online, so it helps to have everything under the same name. Next time I'm on, though, I could text you or something, and we could explore together. Wanna trade cell numbers?"

Masaya pulled out his cell phone to input her into his address book, but when he flipped it open, he saw the time. "Fuck! Sorry, I have to leave, like, now if I want to get to school and be dressed in time for practice."

He said this all as he practically jumped out of the booth and grabbed his bowl, preparing to make a run for it.

"Ouch that's too bad," Misaki thought a bit then smiled, "Oh! How about coming with me and a few friends some time to the beach around here for a day? Would you like to? It might not be a trip, but it could be fun." Misaki offered. She wanted to ask if he could come with them on the beach trip, but knowing Kanaye he wouldn't want anyone not part of the situation going.

Misaki smiled some and pulled out a rough sketch. The pants were loose and a bit baggy. The shirt was cut to the shape of the player to give the body more of a aerodynamic effect. She'd based it so that the player could move faser and and have a less constrained uniform. "I'm not sure if it would work though."

Misaki nodded happily, "Sure," she was saying when he cursed and she got up. "I'll walk with you? Do you think I could come watch? I stay at the dorm's anyway?"

Masaya was a bit startled by the beach invitation. Was she serious? He didn't know whether to believe her or not, so he stalled on giving a definite reply. "I'll have to think about it. But thank you."

He leaned forward a bit to see the sketch, nodding at her ideas. "I like the shirt - it looks like a nice fit - but I think baggier pants would get on my nerves. Still, it looks great, Aoi-san. Maybe you could talk to Ito-sensei about getting new uniforms for next year." Aoi-san wasn't half bad. If she could get into baseball, she just might be amazing to hang out with.

He blinked at her when she offered to come with him. "Um, yeah, you can. Stay if you want to, even. We'll just be running drills, and you'd have to stay on the bleachers and not bother anyone, but if you really want to..."

"Great, it would have to be near the end of summer, but I'm sure that I can set something up that can be a lot of fun, okay," Misaki cheered and walked with him out the door.

"I'm glad you like them. I'll have to work on it and talk to Toshi-chan about what I can do to improve it," she made notes on making the pants tighter. "I'll have to talk to Keiichi-kun, maybe I can ask him if I can talk to his dad about it."

"Yay, I don't mind, it'll give me a chance to see the motion of the players." Misaki explained and nodded, "I'll wait for the actual game to cheer you on, if that's okay?"

"Who would you invite? Anyone I'd actually know or what?"

Masaya honed in on one part of her sentence, smirking at her before he said, "What's this 'Keiichi-kuuun'?" He dragged out the name in a girlish voice, or what attempted to be one. "Ito-san's in my class. How would you know him? Because you're sounding awfully familiar with him right now." Frankly, he just enjoyed teasing people, and girls especially got so hung up if you even insinuated that they were seeing someone - whether it was true or not. He had to see what she would do.

He stifled a smile when she suggested the possibility of cheering for him at a game. He couldn't say that had ever happened before - it sounded like something out of a movie. Though he wasn't about to go around grinning like an idiot, the prospect alone made his face flush with excitement before he could stop himself.

If they kept talking like this he might never even get into the locker room. He sped up his pace.

"Well, Toshimi-chan, um...Seiji-kun, do you know Shirou-kun?" Misaki asked, "He's part of the Kendo club."

Misaki blinked and laughed happily, "I've always called him Keiichi-kun. He was my mentor when I started the cooking club, and since he was president, he was always kind to me and let me call him that. We're going out actually, so I call him that around people that are in his class. Do you happen to know him well?"

She paused, thinking about Keiichi...it made her worry. Had they gone out in a while? She wondered if he was busy or something? Shaking it off she hurried to tag along with him, "So what do you do at practice Inoue-senpai?"

Masaya nodded. "Ah, Nawanaka-san and Mikio-san." It's better than no one. "Nah, I don't know him, or at least not the name. He in your grade?"

"Oh, really? That explains it, then," Masaya said, cooling slightly since she'd responded so calmly to him. Ito Keiichi: nice enough guy, yeah, but way too patient with everybody around him. Had no fire. Masaya'd always seen him as little more than a bland, if friendly, face - one that wasn't too exciting or worth remarking over unless he did something particularly stupid. Still, he had no beef with the guy, so he gave a vague response that could apply to just about anyone: "He's alright. I don't know him well at all, but we've never had any problems, at least."

He brightened as the conversation turned back to baseball - something that didn't involve messy personal lives or his lack of social graces. "It's great! I love baseball, so I don't care what we do so long as I'm around it. Today we'll probably just do batting and catching drills and run, but when it rains hard sometimes we have to do field maintenance. That's lame, but it's a part of the sport. What sports do you like, Aoi-san?"

Their conversation was cut short by their arrival at the school. "Sorry, I gotta go. See you around? And text me about the beach!"

With that, he let himself into the side door of the gym, running for the locker room and hoping he wasn't too late.

Misaki nodded, "Seiji-kun sits not to far from me in class. Has he ever talked to you about a sister named Anna-nee before?"

A smile slipped on her face and she gave him a light poke in the arm, "I have two brothers, one's older then me one is younger then me." The smile on her face told Masaya that she knew he was trying to get a rise out of her about Keiichi." Misa tilted her head some, "A lot of people tell me that, they like him well enough but they never know what to think of him."

"Ah me, well...I'm not very good at sports," She admitted and there was no need to tell him that she skipped gym class. "I actually like board games more, but um...I'd like to take up some sort of martial art, maybe something that uses fans. I hear Tai chi can be fun."

Misaki waved to him, "Sure thing."
