WHO: Kanaye and open
WHAT: Punching lights out or general "What the hell, hero?" stuff
WHERE: School
WHEN: After Tom's dungeon
WHY: He was a bit of a douche.

Kanaye was sulking. He had messed up AGAIN in paradise. He had made Maeko hate him for sure, and probably Toru and Kozue as well. And he messed up any change of friendship with Tom. He knew it. He makes everyone hate him. He gets mad at the stupidest things...

Not like he was going to apologize to Renju. Even if he did hate the things he did, it didn't mean that he viewed himself as any less right. There are a thousand ways to reject someone without being so mean about it. And she didn't even react until Tom's shadow showed up. A heartless bitch...

Kanaye was just laying on a bench, glaring at everyone who came over. He really wanted to be alone right now...

Masami happened to pass by Kanaye on her way, and noticed that he was looking rather forlorn. A lot had happened in Tom's area of Paradise, and honestly, she really did think Kanaye had acted pretty... well, either way. She considered just leaving him sulking, but for some reason she really felt like she should talk to him, so she approached.

"Umm... hello, Satou-senpai," she said with a bow.

Kanaye glared at Masami for a few moments before noticing it was, in fact, Masami, and not some random chump. He sighed. "I take it you are here to tell me how completely stupid I was in Tom's dungeon, right?" He sighed. "While I do admit my response was completely out of proportion, I refuse to forgive Renju." He looked at Masami weakly. "Is that enough for you?"

Masami was taken aback by Kanaye's immediate reaction, but brushed it off. "Satou-senpai, well... maybe you were overreacting, but... I'm not going to say you were completely stupid. Something had been bothering you for most of Tom's area, that was pretty obvious, I think."

"If you don't mind me asking, what bothered you so much there? You're normally... well excitable, but that was really extreme. I'm willing to listen, if you're willing to talk."

She did honestly think it was only fair to give Kanaye a chance. If she hadn't thought that, she probably wouldn't have bothered approaching him in the first place. Maybe talking to somebody not named Maeko or Misaki would help him a lot.

"Maybe? Maybe I was overreacting? No, I overreacted big time. Everyone hates me know. They won't say it, but they do." Kanaye twitched. "I do this all the time. I fuck things up. It's my job description. I'm the one member of the team that's incompetent, so it makes everyone else look better."

"I do mind you asking, thank you very much. It's my problems. I have to deal with them. It's...Look, I just don't think Renju handled that situation correctly. The gaijin comments didn't help either..." He curled up on the bench. Considering his height, it was quite a feat.

"Satou-senpai, for what it's worth, I don't hate you... If I did I wouldn't have tried to talk to you in the first place. I think... well, I do think that place is hard on everyone. Ito-san's even admitted that he copes by joking. And well, I wouldn't be surprised if Nawanaka-san's smile is also a way of coping. Even I..." Masami trailed off. Her own issues were unimportant.

"Anyway, I wouldn't say you mess everything up. You've been pretty helpful in fighting shadows. It's all I'm really good for too..." again she stopped, thinking her issues weren't important.

"...Sorry," she said. "I mean, I think Sonozaki-san could have handled that better. I mean, at least she had someone say something like..." another stop. She was REALLY regretting that she hadn't brought along some tea beforehand. And it would've been really weird for her to just take out her thermos. On top of that, she couldn't find anything to say in response to the gaijin comments, since she had no experience with that herself.

Kanaye looked at Masami wearily. "Doubtful. People rarely tell people their problems with them. If they do, they're considered mean and bad. Is it so bad to want people to be honest all the time?" He asked. "Oh, sure, it's hard on everyone, but who's the person who gets yelled at when they make a joke to cope? Who's the person that everything bad happens to?"

"You kidding? Sure, I'm good at that, but you just said it. You're good at that too. And you're much better. Me? I'm replaceable. I'm worthless. Hell, if I left, lots of people would be happy. The only people that would be sorry to see me go are Maeko, Toru, and Kozue. And even then..." He hung his head. "I'm not even sure about that..."

Which was interrupted by a short burst of mocking laughter coming from Kanaye. "You can say that again! It's a bit of an understatement, really." Kanaye drew up to his full height and tried to replicate Renju's voice. "I don't like you, there is nothing attractive about you, and we can't even be friends, because I don't want to have to think about it." Kanaye sighed and blinked. "Say something like...what?"

"Well..." Masami couldn't say it, and paused awkwardly again. Of course, it was true that she didn't actively hate Kanaye, but at the same time, she certainly didn't let most of her true feelings about anything show.

"Satou-senpai, don't be so hard on yourself. You're just as much a part of the team as any of us. And... well, I don't think anyone's replaceable. Remember that... bear thing in Aoi-san's area? You did really well against that... and then against Ikeda-san's Shadow, you did a lot of damage while Kondo-san and me were under its spell. I certainly wouldn't say you're worthless... and I definitely wouldn't be happy to see you go."

Masami forced back a laugh at Kanaye's mockery of an impression of Renju, and was taken somewhat surprised by his next question. "Well... umm... you know... that..."

Kanaye grumbled. "See? Case in point."

"Exactly. I'm not smart like Kou, I'm not a good leader like Kiriko," Kanaye coughed something that sounded suspiciously like "yeah, right", "I'm not good at helping people like Misaki, I'm not a hard worker like Maeko...I can't do anything that no one else could do. Thanks, Masami-san, but I think you are part of a small group with that opinion."

Kanaye leaned back and glared. "Spit it out."

"I think we all have our faults though, Satou-senpai. Oubai-san... well, to me he seems pretty close-minded, Aoi-san's too idealistic... even I think I..." another pause to tell herself that her own problems weren't worth talking about, "...well I'm just no real help for anything besides fighting shadows." A likely cover story.

"Umm... that... what Sagaki-senpai said to Sonozaki-san..." Masami said, "I thought it was pretty touching, like it was from a shoujo manga..." She finished with a sigh.

"Both of those are ridiculous understatements, Masami-san." Kanaye sighed. "But if you really think so, thanks, Masami-san. That's a lie, but you are trying to make me feel better." He smiled. "Thanks again."

Kanaye blinked and laughed. "It was nice, wasn't it? I guess that's why I overreacted. That kind of reminded me of my confessing to Maeko." And Sakura, and Satsuki, and... "So I guess I kind of took it personally. At least Maeko said yes, though. I'm thankful for that."

"Sonozaki-san really didn't need to be that harsh, I think," Masami began, "But, well... Either way I'm glad we got Sagaki-senpai back."

"You and Akuba-san make a nice couple. I'm happy for you..."

She wished she had some tea to sip. It really was easier to hide things that way.

"Yeah, she didn't, which is why I got mad." Kanaye smiled. "I'm glad we got him back, too. I might try to be friends with him now."

"Thanks, Masami-san!"
