Oubai, Kouchisei ([info]daioujou) wrote in [info]disappear_rpg,

Who: Masami, Maeko, Kanaye, Kou.
What: Talking.
When: After cram school.
Where: Kou's house.
Why: Knocking some sense.

Kouchisei was secluded in his bedroom at the family home. When his father returned from work, Kouchisei did not go downstairs to see why he was early, and continued doing what his father wanted. He seemed content, but the truth was in his bedroom was tranquility.

It was at times like this he wished he didn't have cram school.

While he was walking up the garden path, he occupied himself by looking around at the stone lantern and gnarled Japanese oak. He knew a few people wouldn't understand why he attended, or allowed his father to decide so much for him, but he understood how important his future was and the thought of that scared him.

He'd found it a relief to come home; him not being good with people usually drained his energy. A shower and bed. His father was in the front room, talking to somebody. He coughed halfway through hearing them mention Nanakamado. The teachers didn't come here. He was reasonably sure he had done nothing wrong. He hung his coat on the rather elegant hanger and looked to getting upstairs before he could be heard.

"-but it's a group project and we'll all get lower scores if we all work seperately. So if it's acceptable we'd like to know when your son is available to work with us as a group, Oubai-san." Maeko said as politely as she could. Kou's father? Was intimidating.

"Ah, could that be him now?" She asked, hearing someone outside the room.

Kanaye nodded, trying to resist the urge to say anything. Those who knew Kanaye would probably agree with his assessment that he was doing very well. Those who knew Kanaye would probably be wondering why he had black hair suddenly.

To put it simply, given from what he could tell of Kou, and from Kou's comments about his dad, he assumed that gaijin such as himself were not welcome in Kou's house. Thus, he had decided to dye his hair. It took a bit, and he still needed to clean the bathroom, but he felt it was worth it.

"Indeed, Oubai-san." Kanaye was actually using formal address for once. "We need your son's help, and he needs ours, no matter how much he denies it."

Kouchisei's father believed three purposes were served by filling his house with expensive items. People knew whose home this was, who the masters were, and felt an air of cultural sophistication.

He'd been surprised by the sudden visitors. Mostly because Kouchisei hadn't told him he had friends.

These people looked and dressed common. A t-shirt and trousers? In offensive colours, no less. He'd never seen anything as offensive. The clothes were American, but unfortunately that was the way the world was going. Business was conducted in western suites

Give a long pause. Keep them in their place. A palpable air of disgust, and then an answer.

"My Kouchisei?" He turned his head, eyes focusing on Kanaye after a moment of thoughtfulness. He didn't know anything about these people to reveal much just yet. "He is in an accelerated learning programme." Now that he was proud of. "Your inability or unwillingness to address particular individual problems is not our concern. He doesn't have the time to make sure your work is of a finished standard."

Because there was no way his son would be worse than these sorts of people. But he rose anyway at the sound of the door. "Excuse me."

And he walked away, stiffly.

Masami walked up the garden path to the Oubai house. Earlier, she had discussed with Maeko about coming to... talk to Kou, and possibly clue him in that people's lives were, in fact, at stake, and that he should probably get over himself and look at the bigger picture, in so many words.

Masami loved places like the garden path, and if it wouldn't be... awfully strange to stop and admire it, she probably would have. It seemed like the perfect place to just sit and sip tea in peace and quiet and forget about having to repress anything the world's troubles.

She arrived at the door and with a knock, said, "Is anyone home? I'm Sakuraba Masami, a classmate of Oubai-san's..." From what she knew about Kou, it was best to be as traditional as possible. Well... almost. She wasn't wearing a kimono, but hopefully her Nanakamado uniform was OK.

Maeko managed to not appear too taken aback. Or annoyed. Or anything, really.

"I apologise for my onstinance, Oubai-san. But your son's results will also be afected negatively if there are inconsitancies in our work. We only need a few hours of his time to make sure no such inconsitancies exist-"

She managed to disguise the sigh as he walked off well enough. It was fairly clear where Kou got it from.

Kanaye didn't bother to disguise the sigh. Yes. Yes it was. Kanaye turned to Maeko and facepalmed. Kanaye DID, however, bother to talk quietly when he did bother talking. "What the hell is up with him, Maeko-chan?" Kanaye asked, annoyed. "I mean, Kou I can get, but this is supposed to be an adult! He's a douche! Is there any wonder I hate parents?"

Kanaye growled a bit and pulled on his now-black hair, glaring at it. "And I dyed my hair! It'll take forever for this to get out..."

"You're not used to it? I'd have thought you of all people-" She stopped herself mid-sentence, there. "Sorry. I don't mean you should be used to it but...people are like this. It's not abnormal."

"You didn't need to...It's not like that could have gone worse." She sighed.

Kanaye visibly twitched, but didn't do much but sigh. "No, it's not abnormal. Which is why it sucks. People act like this, and no one cares because it's the way it's always been. God dammit, I hate society..."

Kanaye barked out laughter. "Are you kidding? If he saw my hair, he probably wouldn't bother to talk to me. Hell, he might just kick me out."

"There's so sense in being too bothered by it. It's no about to change so..." She shrugged, still keeping her voice down. "I really didn't- I don't- sorry."

Maeko 'shush!'ed at the laughing and sighed. "I'm not sure it'd have made much of a difference if we'd been turned away on sight. It might have saved time.

Kouchisei was exasperated. The last thing he wanted late in the evening was to be greeted by people he thought he'd left behind in school. He was too much like his father in letting people know when they weren't wanted.

He entered the lounge, annoyance written on his face at the fact he had to deal with people when this was the only time he got to relax. Though the thought he liked being away from home made his skin cold. He found it hard adjusting to having less people in the house. It was lonely.

He was holding back till that thought was gone, and then pushed his glasses up his nose. "Right. What are you doing in my home?"

Maeko never thought she'd be releived to have to speak to Kou.

"Oh, Oubai-san. We were speaking to your father." Her tone was still might more polite than the one she usually used to adress Kou. This was his territory and she needed to respect that.

"We need to bring Sagaki-senpai back. Are you coming with us or not?"

Kanaye just nodded in agreement. He knew that saying anything would be very bad, so he didn't say anything. It's not like he could contribute to this conversation, anyway. He smiled at Kou, trying to look as happy as possible, which really isn't all that happy.

"You should wipe that smile off your face. You look like a moron," Kou said to Kanaye. "I want to help Sagaki-san," he said more kindly, and suddenly his face slackened. "But I can't. I know it sounds bad but I don't think you understand."

A glance at the door, and people might have guessed why. Evne Kou felt like he couldn't break anything in his own home.

Kanaye smirked some more and laughed. "I always look like a moron, Kou-san. You get used to it, when you're a moron as long as I have been."

And then Kou said what Kanaye expected him to say. Which means that his smile got a little more violent, his hands started twitching, and his eyes filled with rage. "Oh, no. You've got it all wrong, Kou-san. You CAN save Sagaki-san. But you don't want to get punished for it, you don't want to go against your father. Because you are afraid of him. Who cares what he thinks? Even if he does decide your future, this is the present. If Tom died because you didn't help, how you would feel?"

"Please calm down, senpai. That's not really going to help." Maeko said quietly, breaking her own rule and SNEAKILY putting her hands behind her back to secretly squeeze Kanaye's for a second in the hope that it would help. Raised voices and intimidation weren't going to get them anywhere. She knew full well that if it had to face too much at once you felt threatened.

"We'd appreciate your aid if you're able to offer it. I realize you have difficulties but this is someone's life. You must understand the gravity of the situation."

Kouchisei twitched. Kanaye had used what he believed to be the truth, and he was right. His eyes narrowed and his breathing became deeper. He glanced at Maeko, hoping to learn what she thought, and that it might calm him down. She was being civil - a mediator. He respected her for that by not throwing any of his vitriol at her.

"Don't presume to lecture me. You know nothing about what he's like." He pressed his forehead, trying to contain his anger. "This is my home. I won't have you talking to me like that," he added. Kanaye was right, but some boundaries had to be respected.

He went and sat on the leather couch and rubbed his face. "I would go, but what is there to come back to? You... You don't live with my father. You're lucky. So go away."

"We'll leave without you if we need to." Maeko said, speaking very calmly and forcing herself to respond only to Kou's words, not to his clear irritation. "But you must understand before we do that others came for you. We don't know everyone's situations but it's possible that thiers are just as difficult but they brought you back anyway. Whether you attend or not, you'll make a poor doctor if preservation of life is such a low priority to you."

Kanaye twitched, but shut up and let Maeko talk. She was doing much better then he was, anyway. She had a way with words that he couldn't ever possibly understand. He just nodded and tried to look like he wasn't trying to throttle Kou.

"Pardon the intrusion," said Masami as Ryota let her into the house. She made her way to the lounge, where Maeko and Kanaye were already talking to Kou.

"Oh, everyone's already here..." she said.

Kou's head swirled. His nails dug deeper into the couch, and when he rose his face showed a level of anger he hadn't revealed to most people. A quiet moment of apprehension, and then a soothing gust of cold.

"I'm not going to be a doctor." He turned his head, eyes focusing on the shelf where there was a framed photo of a woman. He didn't know these people well enough to let them know his feelings just yet. "I know I'm being selfish." It was something he was ready to admit. "You people helped me when I needed it; it shames me to know I can never repay your kindness."

Unfortunately there was no way they knew what living with his father was like. His way was perfect. Nothing changed, or was broken. And he'd half-expected them to be told if they broke something they'd pay for it. "But you must understand. I don't have parents as free-willing as you."

And there was a brief pause. "I'm scared."

Masami had arrived just in time to hear the tail end of what Maeko had been saying, and see Kou's response. "...Oubai-san... Well, I hope I'm not saying too much, but sometimes having free-willing parents is just as bad as overbearing ones." She wasn't going to tell Kou that her parents were generally neglectful of her, so she left it at that.

"We're all scared. People's lives are at stake, and we have to put our own lives at stake to rescue them. It's... hard. But this is bigger than any of us, I think."

"Oh, I apologise for my assumptions, then." Maeko said, bowing her head. "I must have had you confused with someone else."

"Sakuraba-san is correct. These are people's lives, they should take priority over one man's approval or diapproval." She sighed. "What are you so scared of?"

Kouchisei tried not to seem too selfish. He didn't want to be like his father. He was more like his mother, honestly.

"Fine. Sort out my problem. I don't mind going."

He attempted to hide the fear in his voice by clutching his hands in his lap - not to mention aggression. They were asking him to choose his friends over his family and he did not think he could do it.

"And if none of you are frightened, then you're a bunch of liars," he added, responding to Maeko. "I'd have thought of what was obvious."

"What's to be afraid of, Kou-san?" Kanaye asked happily, stretching a bit. "I mean, sure, death hurts, but it's not all that scary. And we can come back from it. I mean, come on, Kou-san. Would your mom want you to obey your father, or for you to help someone in need?"

Kouchisei felt his jaw slack. "You are a complete moron."

He threw his arms up in the air. How did Maeko put up with him? One hand fell, and then he stuck out his arm. "My mother wants - wanted - me to stay with my father, to make sure he's all right. If you think I'm going to leave him on his own, then you can get out right now."

"We're not asking you to leave your father on his own," Masami began, "but well..." She didn't quite know how to say it, but she tried anyway. "I guess... maybe you should make some of your own decisions, rather than just listening to what your father says..."

It probably didn't come out quite as well as she would have wanted.

"Hmn. Leave me alone. I need time to think."

He had tried bringing the pressure he felt to an end with that, he hoped, and raised his right hand, balled, to his chin. Too many people, too many voices. They were disturbing the tranquility he'd come to appreciate and spoiling it with their changes.

Finally, he said:

"Don't bother me. I have said I'll think about it. I need to be on my own. I can't think with you here."

"Strange. He's never seen reason to mention your name. So it's even stranger to have so many visitors," Ryota said kindly, which was to say it was removed of any emotion it would normally reveal.

A glance at the uniform told him this girl was more acceptable than the two children in his lounge.

"What do you want?" he asked, hoping she would get off his lawn, so to speak.

"Such a good girl. Everyone's in the lounge." Ryota pushed his glasses up his nose and turned to go back. He knew Kou didn't like him talking to his schoolfriends and was mindful of that, only conversive enough to learn what he thought he ought to know or what Kou didn't want him to hear.

Remembering how his wife had told him to give a growing boy some privacy, he went off into the back.
