WHO: Toru & Haruka
WHAT: Toru pays a visit to another cosplay cafe.
WHERE: Haruka's place of employment, the esteemed Barabara Rakuen.
WHEN: A Sunday, presumably.
WHY: Haru-chan needs her debut, and Toru needs to get out more.

It was the strangest thing. Toru had woken up that morning, played a bit of Matsuri, listlessly watched TV for a couple of hours, and then finally realized that there was nothing to do. Normally, he could keep himself amused via the Internet or games, but posting was slow online at this time and he'd just a few days ago beaten the last of his backlog of games. He supposed it wouldn't hurt to go out and look for more new things to play, or see if there was any interesting character merchandise to pick up. A quick trawl had indicated at least one DS game that would be worth trying, so he had gone out and bought it, completely intent on just returning home to the dorms with it.

At some point during the walk home, Toru realized that he had taken a wrong turn. It wasn't necessarily a bad thing; he still knew the way home, and there was an interesting-looking cafe up ahead from where he was. Thirty or so seconds of walking brought him to the front of it, and he was pleasantly surprised; the establishment was in fact a cosplay cafe that he'd never visited before. The name, Barabara Rakuen, seemed vaguely familiar, and he couldn't help but be curious about the place. Well, I've got time on my hands. This'll be good, I think. After the visit to Devil Torte with Keiichi and Kanaye, Toru had been thinking that another visit to a cosplay cafe wouldn't be such a bad idea. The team had said, after all, that he needed to get out more. This counted as getting out, right?

About a minute later, Toru found himself sitting down at a table near the center of the shop, contemplating what to get and looking over the waitresses almost appraisingly. They were very cute, to the point that he found himself wondering if Kanaye ever came here, and the costumes were of excellent quality. It wasn't a themed day or event, so only half or so were actually dressed as recognizable characters. He now patiently waited to be served.

Haruka was actually finding that she didn't mind this job. Sure, she hadn't really had any experience with otaku culture before now, but she was learning quickly, and she was putting her skills to good use--and hey, she was making people happy, which was always a check in the plus column in her book. There were a whole lot fewer creeps than she'd expected; on the whole, the clientele was actually pretty well-behaved.

And the costumes! Barabara's food might be just this side of average for a cosplay cafe, but their costuming was varied and creative. On most days, she had to keep pretty close to the daily theme (not that she minded the challenge of staying in-character), but Sundays were do-what-you-want day, and you never knew what you might find. Today she'd pieced together something from the various RPG costumes in the back and come up with something vaguely medieval, somewhere between the Kirin Journey series and the female attire in the average MMO.

Plus stockings. The stockings were a must. Fortunately, they didn't ruin the effect.

Oh, there was another occupied table in her section! She hurried over and bowed low before coming back up with an infectious beaming grin. "Welcome, sir~☆ I'm Natsumi, please feel free to call me Natchan~" With a wink, she brought up her pad, subtly posing to show off a little leg. What was the point of dressing up like this if you didn't here and there, after all? "How can I serve you today?"

Toru couldn't help but smile. His server's attitude was infectiously cheery, and he could practically hear the emoticons and symbols in her speech. And... wasn't she from his school? He could vaguely remember seeing a girl of her general appearance at Nanakamado, but he really couldn't be sure, thanks to the costume.

"H-hiya, Natchan. Er..." He gulped and stared at her pose. Were he an anime character, he had a feeling that he'd be getting a nosebleed right about now. "I-I guess you can just call me Toru, or Toru-kun. 'Sir' seems a bit much for someone like me, right?" Toru paused for a moment, in thought and trying not to stare at her too much. "I just want a cup of coffee and some strawberry mousse. Is that alright?"

Oh, he was utterly adorable! Haruka nearly laughed and turned it into one of the giggles that punctuated her speech so much more often here than it did at school. The customers liked it, for the most part, so who was she not to oblige? She jotted it down with a flourish; she wasn't terribly worried about staying 'in-character' today, and was just turning the 'cute' up to eleven. "All right, coming right up, Toru-kun! ♥"

As she hurried off to the kitchen, the wheels were turning in her head. He looked familiar, and she knew she knew that name. Toru, Toru... Maybe he was a Nanakamado student? He looked old enough to be. Well, she wouldn't ask--at least, not now, since the whole point of this place was to get away from real life for a while.

Of course, back at school he'd be fair game.

"Natsumi"'s giggle, combined with practically anything she said, combined with ohgod, her butt as she walked away was enough to set Toru to blushing and attempting to hide his face. Sure, he should have been used to the waitresses at cosplay cafes by now. But she was just so cute! Knowing Toru's luck, though, she'd figure out that he was 'that kid who passed out from playing Matsuri too much' and make fun of him, though. He just had to hope that she didn't. And besides, most of the customers at these places were way worse than he was. Mostly.

Attempting to regain composure, Toru patiently sat, awaiting "Natsumi"'s return.

It was a fairly quiet day, so Haruka had only one other table to check on after putting the order in. Seeing to them meant getting another pot of tea and a soda, and Toru's order had been small enough that it was ready to pick up as soon as she'd finished taking care of them.

She leaned over his table--leaning perhaps a little more than she had to, admittedly--and neatly set the coffee down, and then the mousse, with a pair of strawberries placed in a shape somewhat resembling a heart on the side, and a swirly pattern in whipped cream on the top. Nothing like what you might get at, say, Devil Torte, but it was perfectly passable. A few of the waitresses had argued that it wouldn't hurt to study the competition, but the idea hadn't really sunk in quite yet. "Here you are!"

She straightened and nearly started on her usual 'do you need anything else' spiel, but an idea struck her, and a grin slowly spread across her face. She leaned over again, picked up the little spoon laid next to the mousse bowl, and neatly scooped up a dollop of mousse and whipped cream. "Normally this is extra," she half-whispered in a conspiratorial tone, her gaze darting across the room for effect, "but this one's on the house." With a wink, she lifted up the spoon. "Say ah~♪"

Toru was not nearly as picky about food as Keiichi was, and was perfectly delighted to eat sub-Devil Torte desserts. He was about to grab the cute little spoon when he noticed that his server had taken it first. To say he wasn't prepared for what was coming would be an understatement. When Haruka said "Say ah" he rocketed back in his seat, making an unfortunately high-pitched squeak.

"Wh-what?! P-please, there's no need to..." He wasn't used to being treated like this at all, and it almost scared Toru a little. It didn't help that the waitress' current position gave him a good view of her... assets.

What Toru forgot was that opening his mouth to speak was still opening his mouth.

Grinning from ear to ear, Haruka neatly slipped the spoon into Toru's mouth. She'd done this with a few other customers, so she'd had some practice. Granted, she hadn't done it this way specifically before, though now she almost wished she had--freebies weren't bad here and there as long as she didn't go overboard, and his reaction was priceless. That little squeak was just too cute. She could get to enjoy this.

"There you are~" She flashed him a teasing but still friendly grin. "That wasn't so bad, was it?"

It really wasn't so bad, if still somewhat embarrassing. Actually, really embarrassing, but at least pleasant for Toru. The mousse tasted alright, too. However, Toru patently did not want it to happen again, and shyly took the spoon from Haruka.

"Ah... er... no, that wasn't bad a-at all." He looked up at her from his seat. "S-should I just eat now? Y-you must be pretty busy, right?" Sure, it wouldn't be bad to talk to her for a while longer, but at the same time Toru knew how annoying patrons who monopolized the time of waitresses were.

The one time had been enough for Haruka anyhow, and she stood back up straight, nodding cheerfully. "I should take care of the rest of the section, but I'll still be around, so if you need anything at all, just call for me and I'll be right there, all right? Enjoy, Toru-kun~" She gave him another one of her beaming smiles and a pat on the shoulder before heading off to attend to her other duties and finally leave him to eat his mousse in peace.
