Who: Shin + Yuuto
What: Restocking
Where: In a remote part of Iburi
When: After school
Why: BRB CIGARETTE RUN

Shin had known that as soon as he entered high school, life was going to suck. He knew of the expectations, and of his parents' desire for him to help out at the bar, and of the pressing need to do well in school. He knew that his part-time job at the used book store would do little to deter his parents from making him help out. Nevertheless, Shin had applied anyway.

But the one obvious reason that made Shin solidify his hatred of life was on the day he ran out of cigarettes.

And, naturally, the reason why was because he had run out of cigarettes.

He knew he should have stocked up last time he was in this part of town! In the shady part of Iburi, it was simple to get cigarettes. Just go up to a bum on the street, give him some money, and shazam! legally-obtained cigarettes. Or as legal as giving the cigarettes to a minor could get, anyway.

But with his job and his "volunteering" to help out his parents, as well as school and the school stuff he occasionally did, Shin had found that he rarely had enough time to go to this part of town. By the time he finished everything he was supposed to, it was too late for him to obtain the goods.

Today, though, would make up for everything. Because he had enough time to go, and he had gathered all of the money he had never bothered to spent, and he had decided he would spend it all on cigarettes and gum. Because if he ever ran out of cigarettes again...

The world would end.

Actually, sometimes he wasn't sure how he picked up the habit. Sweets would give him diabetes eventually, and it was probably unsanitary to keep chewing on his pens even if he didn't mean to, so he must have picked up smoking along the way as an alternative. Somehow.

Normally he wouldn't really be out in the shady parts of the city on the account of there was only so much shadiness he was willing to be a part of, but it was one of the places where he could buy smokes semi-legally. Looking older does nothing when the cashier keeps asking for your ID.

He liked his pipe better, but cigarettes were more convenient. Besides, he could steal some tobacco from them for his pipe. So he took whatever money he earned from helping around the shrine, and set off.

HE was actually a little surprised to see one of his classmates here. Then again, considering who it was, maybe she shouldn't have been. "Hey."

Having found someone that agreed to buy cigarettes for him, Shin told him what type he wanted and handed him the money. Watching as the man walked into the store, Shin realized how trusting he was being. But it was something he had to do if he wanted to get cigarettes; usually people would do as he asked so long as he promised giving them some money as well. To have someone buy him cigarettes was well worth the price of losing the rest of his money.

Really, it was just basic courtesy though.

Leaning against a wall opposite of the store and staring off into space, Shin looked up when he heard someone greet another person. Though he was sure it was just someone saying hello to a friend, he was surprised to see it was one of his more tolerable classmates and one he had had smoke breaks with before during lunch.

Raising a hand in a lazy wave, Shin pushed himself away from the wall and strolled over to the other boy.

"Yo, Tanaka," Shin greeted. "Stocking up too?"

"Yeah," he replied. Yuuto liked Shin, in that he was fairly agreeable with and interesting enough to keep talking to. Being a tolerable classmate helped.

Oh, and the smokes. Those helped tremendously too.

"You doing all right?"

Nodding, Shin grinned as he said, "I will be once I get my cigarettes. I haven't gone so long without one since I first started smoking."

Back then, he had been nervous even coming down here. He had to rely on intoxicated customers drunkenly asking him if he wanted a cigarette in order to get his fix of nicotine, and those opportunities came in waves. Sometimes he'd get offers day after day, and others he'd have to go weeks without. Now that he had a job, was older, and more confident in his ability to persuade someone to buy him cigarettes, he was able to smoke more. Which he often did.

The tinkling of bells hanging over the door of the shop alerted Shin to someone exiting the store, and with an even wider grin Shin darted over to the man that had just come out. Looking very much like a kid on Christmas, Shin accepted the bag and waved jauntily at the man. Already digging out a carton, Shin walked back over to Tanaka as he peeled off the plastic. Flipping it open, he withdrew a cigarette for himself before offering to the other boy. Sticking the stick in his mouth as he dug for his lighter with the hand holding the bag, he withdrew it and immediately lit up. Who cared if he was an underage smoker in this part of town - worse things had happened here.

"Ah, thanks." Yuuto took the cigarette, not one to turn down a free smoke. He fished his own lighter from somewhere in his sleeve, lighting it up and taking a deep breath. It felt much better to have something to chew on again that wasn't something he could get thwapped on the head for.

...Though actually, he did get smacked in the head for smoking, but his grandfather seemed fine with it as long as he didn't do it in the shrine. It was a fair exchange, he supposed.

"So, you heard anything interesting lately?" He always asked Shin this at some point sooner or later; Yuuto had to figure out what he was going to keep an eye on every now and then, after all. Not that it was always successful, either.

Watching as Tanaka took out his own lighter, Shin exhaled from his cigarette slowly. Oh, how he had missed this - even if it had only been a couple of days since his last one. He was definitely going to relish this one though while he caught up with his classmate.

Smirking lightly when Tanaka asked the question, Shin tapped his cigarette to get rid of the ash before folding an arm over the other.

"Sagaki from our class asked me the same thing recently, though not as politely," Shin began. "He's playing detective and trying to figure out Sato's murder; he actually wanted me to help find information. Not that there's much out about it. The police are being pretty tight-lipped about it. I told him I'd keep an ear on the ground, but there hasn't been anything new regarding Sato.

"Aside from that, nothing too interesting. Some girls found a list of six first and second years ranking them from how likely they were to put out. Some second year, Waka-something, was put first. I would've thought that first year, Kondo, would have been number one. She doesn't have a reputation for dismissing suitors like Ikeda."

Really, there hadn't been anything interesting lately. Nothing that really seemed out of the ordinary, anyway.

"Huh." Yuuto knew about Sagaki, sort of. Most of what he knew was second-hand information and from rumors, none of which seemed very pleasant. He'd actually told himself it was better to stay away. But now that this was brought up, maybe he'd go...figure out something and do a little bit of investigating on his own. Somehow.

Upon hearing about the list however, he had to stop himself from making a face. It was only half-successful. He didn't really want to admit it, because even Yuuto was aware that it was pretty prudish coming from him, but the idea of people dating in high school bothered him more than it should. Nonetheless, he tried to shake it off as much as he could.

"Thanks for the info."

Nodding, Shin took another inhale. By now, everyone had been warned by their friends to avoid Sagaki, so he supposed that Tanaka's reaction (or lack thereof) was to be expected. Still, he felt vaguely guilty for not thinking up better gossip. Aside from what those four girls reported, there really was nothing at Nanakamodo. And if there was, it was being kept a secret or was the typical "he's dating her, she's dating him" drivel that Shin refused to lower himself to. Who people dated was none of his business.

At the mention of the list though, Shin smirked lightly. Tanaka looked like he was holding his emotions back.

"No problem," Shin said, waving the thanks away. "Still, whoever made the list is a total dumbass, isn't he? He better hope he doesn't get caught. The chicks on that list must be furious about it."

Well. Maybe not Kondo. But the others, he had no idea.
