How far does a Ball fly?
Who: Makeo and Toshimi
What: Hanging around the Sky Park
Where: Sky park in the late afternoon
When: After school
Why: Misaki's trying to figure out things at her house and needs distraction.

Misaki stared down at the drawing she was doodling. It wasn't perfect, she hardly liked it but it was fun to work at. A differnt looking uniform with a baseball feeling to it. Her brother had given her the idea and it seemed to make the most sense. Fingering her locks she glanced around at the park wishing it was real. The place made her wonder just what reality was. The world of the shadows seemed so deep and dark, but at the same time, she liked it. There was something more real about that place then there was in this world and it was starting to get to her. Misaki didn't know why but she wanted to understand it.

She also wanted to understand sports better so she wouldn't get in trouble for school. She needed to talk to someone about it, other then Kiriko or Maeko. But she wasn't sure who. Pushing back her hair behind her ear she pulled up her knees and was lost in her world until a shadow fell over her light and she looked up, smiling. "Hello...I didn't know you were here."

Toshimi was impressed by the Sky Park--for all she knew, it could have been a real park in the springtime. Looking around, she found herself wondering why it had taken her this long to come here. Before she'd left home, her friends had all given their opinions on places she should go in Iburi. Toshimi hadn't been to many of them yet, but today she felt like it would be beneficial if she went out into the world before going back to the dorm. One of her old friends had recently emailed her asking for pictures of the famed Sky Park, and of the places her friends wanted pictures of, Sky Park was the only one that was free.

She'd been using her cell phone camera to take photos of the views around the park when she heard someone apparently talking to her. She turned around to see the pink-haired girl from their group working on a drawing. "Oh," she said, "Good afternoon. Aoi-san, right?" She smiled politely.

"Oh Afternoon Toshimi-senpai," Misaki smiled and then stood up. "Oh! Toshimi-senpai do you think I can borrow youfor a bit please. You know a lot about sports right...um...do you think you can help me with something please?"

"Sure," said Toshimi, "If it's about baseball, I'm your girl...and if it's about another sport, I'm glad to help, anyway." She gave a nod and asked, "What do you need, Aoi-san?"

"Well....How...exactly do you play?" She looked down. "See...I've been kinda skipping gym class and Aomori-sensei'll find out soon enough that I'm not really sick. So...So I have to start playing. But I'm really really bad at sports. So...Do...Do you think you can help me?"

She bowed and clapped her hands together. "Please oh please Toshimi-sempai!"

"You...don't know how to play baseball?" Toshimi asked. "In this day and age?" She knew that naturally many people didn't play baseball, but Toshimi had thought that there would only be a tiny minority in Japan who'd never even seen a game. If she had an opinion on the skipping of gym class, she didn't show it. "Well, it's not too complicated," she said with a friendly smile. "Of course I'd be glad to help."

She glanced out at the city view. "If you want to actually practice any sports, though...it might be smarter to do it somewhere else."

"Really? You'll help me! Oh thank you so much Toshimi-sempai! I'll try to do my best." Misaki told her and looked out over the city. She glanced down to see the drop and shivered some. "It's really far down there. But where could we pratice? At the school? And I'm sorry if I ask a lot of questions. I want to know enough so Aomori Sensei doesn't get mad at me."

She poked her fingers together, "I've never played much sports. My sisters did in school, but my family isn't very into that. They're more...um...what's the word that my Auntie used? Oh yeah, they're more brains then jocks. By the way...what's a jock strap?"

"Oh, don't worry about it...ask as many questions as you want," Toshimi said. "I don't mind answering." It was easier for her to answer questions than to figure out what Misaki needed to know herself. "We could go back to school, but..." she looked up. It was already getting a little late to be at school. Even club activities being held today would be over by now, for the most part. If they wanted to use any of the school equipment, they'd likely have to ask the coach (if he was still there) to unlock it...which would be fine for Toshimi, but Misaki might have an issue. "I don't know if it will work..." she summarized her thoughts.

"Uh huh..." Toshimi didn't really know anything about Misaki's family life, but apparently she had sisters. "That's, uh--" Misaki's question knocked her off guard. Of all the things to ask...and Toshimi had already agreed to answer her questions. "It's a kind of underwear that guys wear, often for sports," she explained scientifically. "But anyway..."

"Ah okay, so I don't have to wear one. That's good. Um...so what's the first rule of playing? I know you have to hit the ball with the bat and run around bases right? But like...how do you know when to hit the ball?" She blushed and looked down, "I'm sorry if I seem so silly right now Toshimi-sempai."

"That's the first thing you need to know, yeah," she nodded. "You try to hit the ball and run as many bases as you can without getting out." She paused. "As for when to swing...well, it mostly takes practice. Have you heard the saying, 'Keep your eye on the ball'? You have to do that, but you also have to visualize where it is in your head, and where you want it to go, and then the angle you hit it at and the amount of force you use has to be optimal for..." She stopped, realizing that she was venturing into the more complicated aspects of hitting. "It just takes practice," she said with a nod.

"And if you don't hit the ball...you know about strikes, right? And outs?"

"Keep your eye on the ball? Visualize it? Angle the hit...but I'm not good at math Toshimi-sempai. What if I totally miss and it goes over my head or hits me...that's gonna hurt isn't it?" Misaki asked as she looked at Toshimi a bit nervous. Hearing about strikes and outs she looked at her curiously. "Strikes and outs? Well I know you get three strikes and then you have to sit down, right?"

Misaki clasped her hands, "Practice, as in actually hit the ball? Well I'll give it my best...um...you won't laugh if I can't hit it right Toshimi-sempai?"

"Th-that's just advanced stuff," Toshimi said, shaking her head. "You should work on hitting it first and then worry about how to aim it," she said. "It's all about timing. Oh, and if it's outside of your strike zone-- that is, if it's over your head or if it hits you or if the pitcher throws it in some way that would make it impossible for you to hit, that's called a ball. At four balls, the batter goes to first base automatically. That's called a walk."

Toshi nodded, "And yes, once you get three strikes, you're out. After three outs, the players change positions so that the team at bat goes to field and the team in the field gets to bat. The period in which both teams get to bat is called an inning." She stopped for a minute. "Are you following so far?"

"Kinda...it's a lot to learn, but I think I have it. Um...A strike is when you swing at a ball and you miss, three strikes and your out. An out is when you miss the ball three times, a ball is when the pitcher misses the strike zone, which is where they have to throw the ball for you to swing at it, and if it hits you or you get four balls, you get to go to first base right away which is called a walk." Misaki repeated and smiled. She ran her hand through her hair. "Once there are three outs the team swiches and it's the other teams turn to try to hit the ball. And that time that they are up is called an inning."

"Sempai, what exactly is a 'Strike zone' and um...is there any other way other then not hitting the ball to get out?"

Toshimi nodded approvingly. "That's right. You have a good memory, Aoi-san."

"The strike zone..." she thought about it for a moment. "The top is halfway between the top of your shoulders and the..." she realized how easy it would be for Misaki to lose track of what she was talking about. "It's easier to see a diagram of it then for me to explain it to you. You can find a good picture on Quickipedia, I think. Or if you want, I could try to draw it for you...oh," she stopped herself. "Before I forget, you should know that if you try to swing and then miss, that's automatically a strike, even if it would have been a ball otherwise. So you have to be able to judge whether or not it's in the strike zone yourself. As a general rule, though, in your position it might be better to swing more often than to not swing." The way Toshi figured it, if it were Misaki against a capable pitcher, the pitcher wouldn't even consider purposefully walking her.

"As for other ways to get out, that gets into the next part of the game: that is, after the ball is hit." She started counting the ways to get out on her fingers as she named them. "First of all, if someone in the field catches your ball before it lands on the ground or hits anything, that's an out. Second, if the ball gets to a base before you do, that's an out. And third, if you're running and one of the fielders tags you with the ball, that's an out too." Toshimi stopped to think. "I think that's basically all the ways, without getting too technical about it."
