WHO: Renju, Hamasaki-sensei.
WHAT: A meeting (backdated to shortly after the other meetings).
WHEN: See above.
WHERE: Hamasaki's office.
WHY: It's mandatory.

Renju had been distracted lately.

There had been quite a few reasons for this, not least of which was coming to terms with what had happened on Christmas. Nearer to the surface of her mind lately, though, had been Paradise, and its encroachment on the real world. She'd withdrawn again, but this time from school rather than for it; her grades had seen a dip as time normally reserved for studying was spent poring over notes and reviewing the facts of the case. She hadn't come closer to any sort of conclusions, and was despairing of ever doing so. So caught up in all this was she that she'd failed to show up for her original appointment time, and a note from her homeroom teacher had been needed to remind her to show up.

She was, as a result, somewhat distracted as she sat in Hamasaki-sensei's office, her foot tapping steadily against a leg of the chair. After all, she had something more important than her own future to worry about.

Hamasaki was leafing through a pile of papers on his desk, a very slight frown on his face as he carefully arranged them back into a neat pile and then looked up at Renju.

"I cannot help but notice Sonozaki-san that your grades have taken a dip, whilst the grades you are getting are still solid grades it is always worrying when a student no longer maintains their usual standard."

He pressed his fingertips together and peered at Renju over his hands. "Has something in particular happened to distract you from your studies? Or is it perhaps you are still having some trouble coming to terms with your loss?" His tone was sympathetic, and he tilted his head questioningly.

Renju sighed. The drop in her grades hadn't escaped her notice, and her stomach still roiled whenever she looked at a returned test and saw something in the 80s rather than the 90s. Her family had never berated her for bad grades, it was true--it was almost worse, however, that it had been an expectation and not a demand. The fact that it was an expectation of the dead was still something she had not yet fully come to terms with, as much as she might tell herself otherwise. She was trying to change her life path, after all--wasn't that enough?

"I apologize for not working to my usual standard," she said in the polite, slightly over-formal tone she typically used with teachers and such. "There have been some personal issues recently that I have been working to resolve."

"There is no need to apologise, I am merely concerned about your wellbeing. I am sure a student as yourself would not be merely slacking." He gave here a very slight smile.

"It is understandable you may be having some personal problems, after all your loss must still be deeply-" he paused for a moment, "affecting you. It must be hard for you, and then working so hard to maintain such an incredibly impressive standard of work must be exhausting you, you must sometimes just want to give up."

"Not at all." At least, maintaining her academic standards was one thing that had never made her want to give up. It had been her only constant till just recently... and the fact that even that was starting to slip away made that same part of her feel even worse, now that it was coming to the fore. She turned a bit pale despite herself.

"It's something I've come to terms with," she said politely but a little weakly, trying to recover from that moment of weakness. "I appreciate your concern, however."
