WHO: School guidance counselor.
WHAT: Mandatory discussion.
WHERE: School Office.
WHEN: After Yoshi's dungeon.
WHY: Life evalutation.

Kou had been sitting quietly in the chair. He was more sure about this now - discussing his personal life with the counselor - than he had been almost a year ago. He'd still find aspects of it unnerving, and he wasn't showing a lot of what he was thinking.

Looking thoughtful, he rested his hands in his lap and waited.

"It's been a long time since we've spoken, Oubai-san," Hamasaki began amicably. He was hardly an imposing man, and his office was littered with hints of austere conservatism that might put like-minded people such as Kou right at home.

"I know that you are only in your second year, but have you given further thought to what you plan to do after you graduate?"

He looked around the office, and found himself not feeling too uncomfortable. It was better to be prudent than flashy. The former quality was one he found trustworthy.

As for the passed time, well, they had already talked about that. He gave a small nod to acknowledge it, but didn't say more because he was dealing with it.

"Well, I'm looking to study medicine."

"Medicine? Interesting - I thought your father managed a ryotei? Didn't you plan to follow him into the business?"

"That was his decision." He spoke in a calm, collected voice to show that was the opposite of what he'd decided; also, that he hadn't done so in an angry temper. He didn't like the thought of running a business. It was disinteresting, unlike natural sciences - he liked to figure out the why.

"I suggested we employed from within the family." That was the end of the matter. "Honestly? I find the interior of a human being more interesting than the exterior."

"That is an... interesting perspective." Hamasaki adjusted his glasses, deliberately trying to take the best interpretation of Kou's fascination with people's insides.

"But isn't your father disappointed?"

Kouchisei looked down deferentially without responding for a while. Honestly, he wasn't sure his father wasn't disappointed, but this was something he had dealt with, and he knew he would have to direct the family at a certain age anyway.

"I'm going away to study," hopefully he was, "and then I'm coming back home. But that's personal business. I don't wish to bother you with it."

"Personal business is my job, as well, Oubai-san." He folded his hands on the desk in front of him. "And isn't it better to talk to a professional?"

He murmured in consideration, and didn't speak for several moments.

"Everybody talks too much." But Hamasaki was right; a professional knew what he was talking about. He seemed a little more relaxed. "He found out the wrong way, but if I don't disappoint him and do well, he'll get over it."

"You seem like you've made up your mind on this matter."

Hamasaki takes a look at a small stack of papers that have been neatly stapled together.

"If you do so choose to study as a doctor, you are certainly qualified for it in terms of intelligence. Any respectable university would likely accept you."

"Are there any ones in particular that you look to apply at?"

Kouchisei's furtiveness stopped; he stopped looking at the office and focused more on Hamasaki. Then his eyebrows raised at the investigation of the paper stack, but his thoughts paid it no heed - they appreciated the compliment more.

He listed a number of top-ranked universities. The ability was there, he worked hard, and he believed he was as intelligent as Hamasaki said he was. Why would he aim lower?

"I'm just finding it difficult," he admitted, resting his head on his fist. "I'll be leaving behind a very strange bunch of people."
