I FORGOT THE MODJOURNAL PASSWORD SO IT IS SEIKOTIME.
Who: Everyone
What: IBURI SNOW FESTIVAL
When: Around IC 'Christmastime' evening.
Where: Central Iburi
Why: Funtime, slinks! Delicious threading.

Snow had fallen all over Iburi, thin enough to walk through but thick enough to transform Iburi into a 'Winter Wonderland'. The town was heaving for the snow festival, massive lit up ice sculptures took pride of place in the park, ranging from giant replications of famous buildings to contemporary sculptures of popular television characters. Hot food and drink vendors were on every corner and the streets were already thronging with people wrapped up in hats and scarves.

Fairy lights hung from every building and a few of the shops had opened late in the hope of luring in some customers. There was also the promise of fireworks later that night and people of all ages were running around throwing snowballs and making snowmen.

SCULPTURES.
[info]mellow_lellow

Massive ice sculptures filled the park, including a huge lit up Eiffel Tower, an intricately carved Big Ben and the Statue of Liberty. Over the gate to the park a huge arch had been made, covered in delicately carved roses and vines and lit up in soft greens and pinks.

There were also slightly smaller but just as beautifully made replications of famous people, favourite television characters, though what was gaining the most attention was a huge ice maze with a large raised ice pagoda in the center for those that reached it.

Toru had broken out the pink scarf for this. In previous years, he hadn't attended the snow festival- it was where the people were, it was scary, he had better things to do. This was the year his excuses broke down and he found himself giving in to curiosity.

Now he wandered among the ice sculptures, utterly impressed by the handiwork and the beauty of the spectacle.

Tom was standing, hands in his pockets, he looked up at the statue, biting his lip. He almost wished he'd brought Max. Over the past few days he'd been dragging the puppy around with him, and thought it best to be able to move quickly.

But now he was reminded of home, of the life he'd lead, before personas and before what most of his current friends would call "the crazy." For a moment he felt nostalgic and kind of lonely.

"Did you live in New York?"

Kozue had.... not precisely snuck up behind Tom, but she had walked up, watching him as he contemplated the Statue of Liberty. "I mean, that's where that statue is, right? It's pretty."

Kozue looked warm; the small girl was almost devoured by the large down coat she was wearing, and to top it all off, she had her hands in a fur muffler. Her cheeks and nose were still bright and rosy from the cold, though.

Tom looked over at Kozue with a soft smile. After a moment he almost laughed to see her wrapped up, and he thought he was prepared. He nodded and looked up at the sculpture.

"It's on an island. My family only visited once, and I insisted we climbed all the way to the top." He slipped his hands into his pockets, and tilted his head to the side.

"I pretended she was walking through the streets while Jackie Wilson was playing." Tom let out a breath, and it hung in the air in front of his face.

"Mom always did love Ghostbusters."

"It's not as nice as the real thing," Kiriko told the company she was keeping ((THIS MEANS YOU, REPLY)) as she gestured to the Eiffel tower, "But they got all the details just right. It's impressive."

The pagoda, however, was drawing her eye - large crowd, big lights, and she heard there was a maze inside. Probably an easy one made for children, but she was curious about what was on the inside.

"We should send out a text - maybe some of the others are here."

Kouchisei was impressed by the tower's size and structure; tipping his head back, he showed a level of interest in how far it ascended, till his stomach felt queasy and he had to look elsewhere.

The lights were pretty and there was spoken and town noise - crowds and cars - everywhere.

"You're been to the Eiffel Tower?" he asked Kiriko.

"I've only been to China," he replied, shaking his head.

There was something romantic about Paris, he'd heard. Except he didn't know what to think of it without seeing it for himself. Divertingly, he reached for his mobile and put a message on his journal.

"Done." He put the phone away.

Toshimi had thought that going to the snow festival would upset her; Ginji had gone to last year's and told her about it, and they had admired the pictures he'd taken of himself and his Iburi friends with the various ice sculptures. She'd never looked them up; it seemed like it would be too painful, but she found herself wondering if any of them were here.

Oddly, though, she felt all right. She couldn't quite piece together why it was, but the memory was truly and honestly not bothering her in the least. Her cousin had been here, now she was here, and it was fine. Maybe her emotions had been frozen in place like the ice statues. Maybe free entertainment gave her some inner peace.

Or maybe she was just more concerned with the fact that she was totally and completely lost. Not even metaphorically; Toshi had no idea where she was. She stood on her tiptoes in the ice maze, trying without success to see over the frozen wall. And when she stood normally again, she was even more confused. All of the walls looked the same. She needed help getting her bearings.

"Hello?" she called out, hoping to hear somebody else in the maze that she knew. "Can anybody hear me...?"

"Toshimi-san?" Seiko's face appeared around a corner looking thoroughly relieved to see someone else she knew. She was wrapped up warm in a large patterned bobble hat, and purple fluffy scarf and thick mittens.

"I came in here because I thought the view from the pagoda in the middle would be nice." She gestured towards the middle of the maze where the ice pagoda sat on a raised platform of ice. "But I'm not very good at working out these things."

She walked over to stand next to Toshimi and stamped her feet to keep them from going completely numb, she had been lost in the maze longer than she cared to admit, and had been on the verge of ringing someone to beg them to launch a rescue mission to get her out.

"How long have you been in here?"

"Yukizaki-san, good evening!" She waved. Toshimi herself had at least decided it had gotten cold enough to bundle up; she was wearing her puffy red-and-gray ski jacket that looked like it was made in the 1980s (because it probably was), although it had never been that great for keeping out the cold.

She looked pleased to see Seiko; maybe her sense of direction would help. But as Seiko spoke her face fell a little; they were both equally lost. She should have figured. Now that she thought of it, Seiko didn't seem like the kind of person who would be good at this sort of thing.

But somebody was better than nobody, at least. "I thought I would be able to figure it out easily," she told the other girl sheepishly. "But all the walls look the same and I've made too many turns to keep track of."

She fished out her cell phone to check the time out of habit, but shrugged. She hadn't actually made a note of the time she entered. "A while. 40 minutes, maybe?" She watched Seiko stomp around. For a second she wasn't sure if the other girl was mad about something but then she realized it was because of the cold. Toshi was wearing thick socks under her sneakers, but her feet were getting on the cold side, too. "It's cold," she stated.

"Have you seen any landmarks, other than the pagoda?" she asked. "It might be nice to get there, but honestly I'd be happy to find the way back to the entrance at this point."

Seiko shrugged. "It is harder than it looks, I thought it'd just be a simple one you know? But they always go all out for the festival." She felt a little better to know that Toshimi had been wandering around almost as long as she had.

"I had been on the verge of calling someone to try to get help out of here, bits of me are going numb."

She rubbed her hands together, as attractive as her gloves were they were not exactly keeping her hands warm. She had hoped maybe Toshimi would have a better idea of how to get out. After all it was pretty clear out of the two of them she was the more logical and down to earth.

"Nothing really besides the pagoda, these walls are pretty high, I tried to retrace my steps back to the entrance but I just ended up even more lost." She frowned. "I guess we just have to keep heading for the center."

"I guess we should start walking," Toshimi said. "Maybe if we stayed along one of the walls..." She started walking along the right wall, although she didn't have gloves, so she didn't actually touch it.

It was true that they had gone all-out for the maze. "I've never seen anything quite like this, actually," said Toshi. After a moment's reflection she added, "Well, in Paradise, once. The atmosphere was totally different, though." And there it was again; another disturbing experience that was just failing utterly to disturb her.

"I don't know," she said, toying with her phone as she walked. "I can usually find my way around just as well as anyone. Wouldn't want to get anyone else lost. Although maybe Sonozaki-san or Sagaki-senpai might be able to figure it out." But she wasn't 100% on the idea of inviting Renju to an ice maze, and what exactly had happened with Seiko and Tom? She looked at Seiko. "Someone else?"

"There's probably a quick way out once we get to the middle," she nodded.

Shops were open some of them having decorated their windows for the event or having special late night sales and promising impossible bargains.

Impossible bargains, you say? Then there was Kozue, wrapped up for the weather, shopping like a woman possessed. They would need someone to carry her purchases home for her, it seemed like, at the rate that she was going.

FIREWORKS

2010-12-18 11:22 pm UTC (link)
Towards the end of the evening a huge and extravagant firework display has been planned in the park, people had begun to gather to watch it. Some people had brought fold out chairs and blankets, whilst others stood their hands wrapped around hot drinks and all of them looking up at the sky waiting for the spectacle.

With nothing better to do than follow the crowd, Toru joined in with the fireworks-watchers. He had no chair or blanket, but made do by sitting at the edge of a fountain-turned ice sculpture. At least his clothes were warm and he had a cup of coffee in hand to keep the chill away.

"...well, this isn't Ultimate Sci-Fi 7, but I think the cold will be worth it... right?" he remarked to himself.

Like most of the other festivalgoers, Yoshimi seemed to be in high spirits, watching the display from a perch in one of the nearby trees – not exactly a recommended (or safe) use of public property, but it provided an excellent view. Unlike most of the others, her outfit – a sheer lace blouse paired with a vintage-looking suit vest – lent her the appearance of having managed to dress for the wrong season, event, and century, and all that was without taking the rabbit ears into account.

Still, she seemed unconcerned with the strangeness of the getup, and she cheered wildly (and, perhaps, more than a little obnoxiously) as a particularly vivid batch of fireworks went off.

In between the sounds of explosions, Toru noticed that one person nearby was cheering very loudly... from up in a tree. Curious, he wandered over, to find that it was Yoshimi, perched up high in an utterly bizarre costume.

He called up to her. "Hey, Tachibana-san! Er... what's up with the costume? Aren't you cold up there?"

"Ah, my very favorite boring person!" she chirped, peering over the branch with a grin that showed quite a few more teeth than her usual one. "The outfit's just for a little shindig I'll be heading to once the show's over."

If she'd planned to provide any more details about her destination, she abandoned the idea as soon as the next round of fireworks went off – there was, after all, more cheering to be done.

"I'm feeling the chill, but I just had to be here. Fireworks, you know. Don't you love 'em?"

"...boring person?" There was a degree of confusion in Toru's voice.

Was it just him, or did Yoshimi seem even stranger than usual? She did zone out from time to time, but this behavior was pushing the limits of normal person.

"Yeah, fireworks are pretty nice. I haven't seen them in real life since I was a really little kid."

For now, he'd handwave her behavior.

"Boring," Yoshimi confirmed, voice dripping with casual malice. "Say we both die tonight - boom, gone like one of those fireworks. What's really going to flash before your eyes?"

As bold as the question was, her tone didn't seem to carry any particular threat to follow through on the conditions of her hypothetical situation - just a challenge. Go on. Impress me.

"Let me guess, fighting Shadows is the best you can come up with? All those grand, heroic errands?"

Yoshimi's words sent a jolt down Toru's spine. What indeed? His life was mostly video games, anime, and manga as far as the eye could see, other than Paradise.

"Well... probably Ito-senpai or Shirai-san's shadows... and Kazuya-kun, I suppose. Maybe..." He sighed. "I'm working on it."

It was only after this response that he felt more worry. Wasn't this the same Yoshimi who was reasonably cautious? Hadn't she just given him an extra housekey so he could look after her ferret, just in case? She'd normally be bothering him about his love life, not calling him boring.

"Are you alright, Tachibana-san?"

"Me? I feel perfect. Liberated, even," Yoshimi replied, and if her eyes were starting to shine gold, it could easily be written off as a reflection of the light from the fireworks.

"I have a place carved out where I won't have to answer to anyone. Just me, a hell of a bucket list, and most of the time I'd need to finish it." She arched her back and shrugged, still untroubled. "More would be nice, but there are things that just can't be helped, you know? Car crashes, silly deadlines, people getting thrown into Paradise..."

Her overacted what can you do? expression did nothing to dispel the notion that megaphone-wielding girls in pigtails were included in that statement.

Whether the following bit of news was happy for anyone involved was up for debate, but Keiichi Ito had arrived.

"Hey," he said, casually waving at Toru, and looking over Yoshimi with a curious and dubious eye. "Where you going dressed up like that? Some kinda cosplay party?"

Keiichi shrugs. "I guess you're right. There are a lot of things that can't be helped." He shoots a grin to Toru, and winks at his oddly dressed teammate. "Me being an idiot's one of them, wouldn't you say?"

"Oh, it's for something like that!" Yoshimi leaned over to get a better look at the arrival, eager to devote her full attention to the shiny new upperclassman she'd found to play with.

"Well, you're a fun kind of guy, as far as I can tell," she purred, punctuating the thought with a wink for emphasis, "and that's really all that matters. It's a real shame that I wussed out on you just as soon as things were getting good. I can just be so stupid sometimes."

She sighed with all the melodrama that a high school girl could manage, dubiously sincere but still as close as she'd come to anything approaching an apology regarding the aftermath of their ill-fated bender. Toru, evidently, was invisible to her.

Reaching into his pocket for his cell phone, Keiichi took a glance at the time, and began casually punching keys with one hand while regarding the, ah, underclasswoman in front of him.

"I AM fun," he agreed. If she was going to bring it up, it was fair game for him to do too...even if Toru was likely to be very confused. "It's okay, though. Even if it was kind of hot..."

He winked at her, letting his eyes casually rake over her. This was Operation Convince The Shadow That He Didn't Know That She Was A Shadow While In Fact Knowing All Along, one of Keiichi's favorite gambits.

"If you're up for it, though, the offer still stands." Keiichi took a step closer, placing a flirty hand on her shoulder. "Though, you do seem busy today. A pity, that."

Having been upstaged by Keiichi, Toru didn't know what to think. On one hand, he didn't have to talk to possibly-crazy-Yoshi, but on the other hand, he had just been completely blown off mid-conversation.

And now they were talking about... what? The way he was talking about it, the way her interest was sparked... had these two gotten together or something? It wasn't Toru's place to ask, but he felt awfully confused.

All he could do was stand and stare at the scene taking place before him.

Re: FIREWORKS

It was, in fact, fully possible for Keiichi to get a hand on Yoshimi's shoulder, primarily because the bunny-girl had hopped down from the tree faster than you could say "if you're up for it".

Considerably faster.

"Oh, what, busy? Here?" She chuckled a little at the thought. There was a hierarchy to these things, and watching pretty explosions came in far below the prospect of adding a fresh notch to her bedpost (as did the task of acknowledging her very favorite boring person, if her current manner was anything to go by). "I saw this tired old show last year, and it was so much better back then. Trust me, I can make time for a little... youthful indiscretion?"

Still grinning, she reached into her vest pocket and pulled out two tickets, bright orange with ADMIT ONE printed across the front sides.

"I know just the place, too."
