WHO: Kai and Toru
WHAT: Preparing terrible things
WHERE: Kai's house
WHEN: Shortly after Toru asks for clothes help
WHY: Because Toru is an idiot, and Kai just can't help himself.

It was a little too cold in Kai's room, probably because the window sash was crooked, but no one in his house had bothered to fix it. "Ehhh we'll get around to it" had been a part of his household routine for so long that Kai had gotten used to it, but he was much more idustrious when it came to sewing.

Currently, he had Toru standing on a small footstool while he measured his limbs, chest, inseam, and anywhere else it looked like he may even need the tiniest measurement, with the contents of his sewing bag spread around their feet, on his bed, and on his sewing table like it had exploded. They'd gotten there late because Kai's mom had answered the door when Toru arrived, and had made a big deal fussing over "Kai's friend" with snacks and questions about himself until Kai had had to drag Toru upstairs, looking exasperated like this happened anytime he brought someone home.

"Sorry my room is such a mess," he noted casually. "My mom finally started unpacking some boxes and she threw all of the contents in here."

The contents of which were taking up the other half of his bed - piles of photographs of a tropical island-looking place, a tiny stone statue of a shiisaa, and a child's kimono decorated with a bright, busy, stylized pattern.

"I think you have the right build to pull off a skirt or maybe a dress, it's up to you. You'll definitely need leggings or kneesocks, though, your legs are so skinny."

Saying that Toru looked uncomfortable would be doing his countenance a disservice. He was completely and utterly at unease, with his arms sticking out, his outerwear off, and his whole body shivering from the chilly room's air. Were it not for the consequences of his not fulfilling that certain request, he would be out of there in an instant. Getting measured once was bad enough, and he couldn't really stand going to most peoples' homes.

Still, he reasoned, it was the lesser of two evils.

"It's fine, really. My room's way messier." Toru smiled a bit at the photos and Okinawan objects strewn across the bed. "Though, what is all of that? Souvenirs from a vacation?" Then, up at the ceiling. "And... that... painting. Er. That's an interesting place to put one."

At Kai's compliment, he found himself biting his lip, curling his toes over the edge of the footstool, hoping he'd shrivel away into nothingness. "That's not a decision I can even really think about making. Seriously, this is just... leggings, really?"

He was in way over his head. What a pity.

Kai was picking up on Toru's nervousness, but it didn't stop him from taking all the measurements he could.

"You can step down now," he said after writing down the last one, and then taking in the mess around them: "...If you can find a place."

While he went rummaging in his closet for a blanket to hand Toru to help the shivering, he spoke. "No, they're from Okinawa. My mom's family all lives on Iriomote, so we'd go there every summer. The shiisaa is a present from my uncle when we first moved to the mainland, so we could put it on our house and it would protect us, and the kimono is something my grandmother made for me when I was little. It's dyed with the bingata style - it's an Okinawan thing. She was really awesome at sewing and textile things - it's my mom's family's business in their village." His historical ramble was light and happy, like he didn't get an opportunity to talk about this often, and it made him happy beyond belief. "We didn't get a chance to go there this summer because of moving back to Hokkaido." He sounded a little faraway and sad as he said this, but he quickly rebounded.

"Yeah, the painting is great! It looks just like Shiisaa, and it's so cool, so my boyfriend hung it up there for me when he was over last -"

That was as far as Kai got before he realized he'd said "my boyfriend" instead of "Yoshida-chan," and he commenced blushing to death. "Um...forget I said that."

With alarming speed, Toru stepped down from the footstool, knocking it down in the process and losing his balance. Only some unseemly flailing of arms prevented him from a painful crash in any direction.

"S-sorry, Yamada-senpai..." Before a response could be given, he turned to pick up the stool from the floor and place it properly upright. "I can just sit wherever, on the floor or something..."

Toru felt somewhat bad about shifting aside boxes and piles of fabric in order to clear a place for himself, but he ended up settling on the floor near the foot of Kai's bed, with a clearer look up at the painting, and a prime spot for listening to his senpai's rambling.

"Oh, I didn't know you came from Okinawa! The team went there a few weeks before you joined, actually. It's pretty there... a-and that explains your persona, too." He listened somewhat intently to the speech, not sure what to think or say. "It sounds like you really love it there, senpai. Guess you really miss it, huh?"

Squinting at the highly interpretive depiction of Shiisaa, Toru tried his hardest to make a meaningful comment. "It's really great... y'know, the colors and shapes and all. I wouldn't mind having something like that on my walls."

It took Toru a second to notice what Kai had said. "B-boyfriend? I didn't know... I mean, I know that you're like that, we had that talk and all, but I didn't know that you had- that it was-"

He shook his head. "S-sorry, I guess I'm just a little... surprised. I shouldn't be talking."

"D-Don't worry about it." Even the tips of his ears were red. Amazing. "I wouldn't have even said anything if not for the painting, cause Yoshida-chan made - ....Um, I'm sorry. Forget that. Please."

Okinawa. That was a good subject, yeah. "Really? Awww, to the main island? Where did you go? Seventy-five-percent chance I'll know it. And, yeah I miss it - it's home. Hokkaido winters are too cold, for one, but it's just..." He trailed off, looking far away and sad for a moment, even with the blush still clinging to his cheeks. "With everything that's been going on lately, it looks better and better every day."

He went on: "I worry sometimes. My mom's family, ah, they're Ryukyu, and they have this one belief about mabui. Mabui is like the soul, what defines a person, and you can lose it if you're scared or shocked or something, and once it's gone it can just leave you like an empty shell. I wonder if something like that is happening to us. We're all stressed out all the time now, and things are only getting more serious, and - I mean, I don't really believe any of the stories, but..."

Trailing off again, Kai stared out the window, avoiding looking at Toru. The light accentuated the shadows under his eyes, and only then did it become really apparent that he looked exhausted, like someone who hadn't slept in days. When he spoke again, his voice was slow and halting. "...What am I even saying?" It sounded like it was for himself, not for Toru.

"...So yeah, you'll need socks or tights or something. Are you looking at a dress or a blouse and skirt, because either way you're going to wear a skirt."

Clothes were much, much safer.
