Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
WHO: Seiko, Tom
WHAT: Getting back to normal
WHEN: After Seiko has come back to school
WHERE: Park? Tom's house to start.
WHY: ~Friendship~

It had been a surprisingly easy decision to come to. Seiko realised she probably did need to talk to Tom about the end of their relationship, after all he was Tom, he probably had misunderstood, or was blaming himself, or something dramatic. But really she just wanted to hang out with her friend, as awkward as it would be she wasn't going to let it hold her back from trying to regain some normality in life.

Her arm still in it's vivid pink cast with her carefully drawn pattern of orange flowers and glitter glue she awkwardly made her way up to the front door of the house she was fairly sure was Tom's, and knocked. It had taken her a little time to work out where Tom lived, it hadn't really come up in conversation before, and it seemed he hadn't really mentioned it to anyone else. But with a lot of perseverance, and admittedly copying some of Tom's methods, she had tracked down the address.

She stood on the doorstep waiting, hoping he would be at the least willing to talk to her.

Tom was not the one who opened the door. Instead it was a man, slightly taller then Seiko, and dressed in a fine business suit. He looked the over with a neutral expression, and spoke in a rather polite and formal fashion.

"May I help you young lady?"

Seiko mustered a small smile, she knew of course that she shouldn't have expected it to be Tom who answered the door, after all she knew he had a father and it was likely that his father would open the door. But she couldn't help but feel slightly like she was intruding into a part of Tom's life he wouldn't want her to see.

"I'm here to see Tom-san, I'm a... Friend from school. Seiko." Once again she felt awkward, she never called Tom 'Tom-san' and it felt wrong on her tongue but calling him Tom to his father seemed wrong somehow.

She also felt oddly self-conscious about her bright pink cast, and the bruises on her face, that had gone yellow but not quite vanished. Although she had dressed as nicely as she could without wearing anything that restricted her ribs, she suddenly felt like she looked a mess.

The man crossed his arms. He didn't especially think much of Seikos injuries, he was almost certain he'd seen Tom come home badly hurt or bandaged from time to time, maybe the ran with some kind of violent crowd. If he did, it wasn't Shinjiro's problem. Not unless Tom cast some negative light on the family. He crossed his arms, and matched Seiko's gaze.

"I see. Then why did you came here? Is it not at that over priced school?"

"Oh, um well, I couldn't find him there. I thought he might be here..." She looked away, unable to keep the man's gaze.

In her experience this was not what father's should be like, compared to her own loving and warm father this man seemed like a different species. She knew from Tom a little of what his father was meant to be like, but she had found it hard to believe.

"I really need to talk to him." She added in a small voice, her eyes remaining fixed upon her feet.

Tom's dad rolled his eyes, clearly exasperated by the need to attend to the situation. He stepped back from the door.

"Then go find him. I have already spent what little time I care to on his affairs." With that he turned and walked down the hall, pausing to look back at her.

"If anything in my home is broken or taken after you search, I will be contacting the authorities."

Seiko frowned slightly at the implication that she was clumsy, or a thief, or a clumsy thief, she was fairly sure she didn't look like either. She slipped inside and closed the door behind her as quietly as she could.

After locating the staircase and creeping up it as quickly as she could without making too much noise she looked around, unsure if she would be able to just work out which was Tom's room or if she'd have to knock on them and see. Which might increase her chances of bumping into Tom's father, who already was pretty intimidating, and she was fairly sure suddenly being confronted by the sight of her again would probably put him in a bad mood.

She stood at the top of the stairs and glared at the door ahead of her, this was all turning out to be far more complicated than it should be.

Tom opened his door, stepping out of his room and moving down the hall. Dressed in the clothes Kai had bought and modified for him, they looked rumbled and his hair seemed unkepmt. As soon as he saw Seiko at the top of the stairs, he stopped and stared at her for a moment. He blinked for a second.

"...Seiko?"

Upon hearing that familiar voice Seiko turned to look at Tom.

"Oh thank God." She sounded incredibly relieved and rushed over to Tom as fast as someone could with damaged ribs.

She ended up standing far too close to Tom, but she didn't really seem to notice.

"I came to find you, because you haven't been at school. I was worried, and I... Missed seeing you." Her words came out fast, partly due to nerves at talking to someone she had dumped only days ago but also due to her continued apprehension at being in Tom's house.

"I thought you might come to the park with me or something so we can talk a bit?" She didn't meet Tom's eyes and kept looking down at her cast, hoping Tom wouldn't be too mortified to find her in his house.

Tom looked back and fourth suspiciously.

"How did you get here? You... you shouldn't be in here." He put a hand to his head, the whole thing kind of blindsided him. And then Seiko was extremely close. He looked toward her, but when he saw she was staring at her feet he looked away.

"I...'ve been busy. I haven't ...um ..." Tom shut his eyes. Seeing her here was hard, he'd only really gotten control of his feelings in the past few days. He reached up and rubbed his eyes for a second.

"I'm just busy, with the case and stuff... I think I'm too busy to go out right now. But... thank you for the offer. We do need to get you out of here before my father finds you."

"I... Found your address." She said evasively. "Besides, it was your father who let me in." She tried to sound casual about this. After all her father let her friends in all the time, she imagined it was quite different for Tom.

She moved to fold her arms, forgetting one was in a cast, and winced at the movement, instead wrapping her good arm across her waist. Then giving Tom an exasperated look. "You aren't too busy to give me half an hour of your time." She said firmly. "I need to talk to you."

Showing slightly unexpected determination she looked Tom dead in the eye and waved her good arm. "It will do you good to get fresh air, if you just stay inside your brain will just end up dissolving."

Tom let out a frustrated sigh and looked away from her. He had realized that his over reactions in the past made him unreliable to the team. He knew he needed to keep his feelings in check, accepting them, but not trying to repress them. He was really making a try at this.

But did life have to it so hard?

Seiko was here, in his his fathers house, a place he never wanted any of his friends to see, and he would have never let her come to. She had met his father, she was standing there less then a foot away, still sporting all of her recent injuries, and seeing them made it extremely hard to not blame himself for being unable to defend her.

And no matter how many times he reminded himself that her breaking up with him was the most likely outcome, that this was still a good way to explore his feelings, it still felt like he'd taken a metal pipe to the stomach. Unlike the time he actually got hit in the stomach by a swung weapon, ice didn't seem to fix it.

It still made him want to cut off contact with every one of his friends and simply hide. It made him want to go back to being all business. He wanted to so badly, and if not for the fact that the at one point personification of those feelings tried to kill his friends, Tom would likely be doing that right now.

She said she needed to talk to him. Maybe it was about the case? Why else would she have come? he wiped his face again and sighed a second time for good measure.

"I... alright, if it's important, I'll go for a short time, but then I need to get back to work. Like you said, Paradise is the priority now."

"Right good." She was glad he had agreed so easily, she had had visions of having to attempt to drag him out bodily as she had walked to his house, and being injured, and a good deal smaller than Tom it had seemed very unlikely that it would have worked.

"Yes, Paradise is the priority, but..." Her tone softened slightly. "It doesn't mean you have to kill yourself over it, even if we are just friends now, don't think you have got away from me making sure you aren't sacrificing your health for this." She poked him gently in the chest, trying to appear lighthearted, and immediately wondering if even poking him with a finger would be too much contact for him to deal with now.

She turned away quickly. "We should get going then."

Tom glanced down at the spot where she had poked him and then back to Seiko.

"Right. I'll go get Max, it's difficult to leave him here."

"Okay, be quick though." She tried not to seem too uneasy about having to stand in the house longer than necessary, but following Tom to his room seemed pretty inappropriate, and the last thing she intended to give was the wrong signals.

"I'll just wait here."

After a minute or so, Tom stepped out of his room, with Max under his arm. As soon as Max saw Seiko, his tail moved back and fourth so fast that his entire lower half moved with it. He began to squirm and move in the hopes of jumping down to the floor and running over to see her.

Tom moved over to her and nodded silently, then head downstairs toward the door without speaking. Once they were outside, Tom put Max on the ground, and put his collar on. The puppy ran over Seiko barking softly, tail still wagging. Then he jumped up as far as he could, barely coming to her knees, and when that didn't help, he began to lick her ankles.

Seiko tried to bend down to stroke the excitable little puppy, however she yelped as her ribs protested and straightened up again, feeling slightly embarrassed at her show of pain, and worried that it would lead Tom to blame himself.

"Sorry Max, not today." She told the puppy.

Outside she felt a little more confident, and managed to look slightly less apprehensive. Despite it being November it was mild, and she unbuttoned her coat, letting it hang open. Unlike previously instead of conservative pastel shirts with sickening kittens on them she now wore a dark blue skirt that just skimmed her knees, a pair of incredibly bright blue heels, and a dark silky green shirt of which she had left the first couple of buttons undone. She had spent some time trying to decide what to wear that was appropriate for seeing your ex-boyfriend, and had resorted to getting advice from her mother which was possibly a mistake.

"How...Have you been? I mean since I..." She left the last word hanging in the air, and turned to look at him with concern.

At being rejected petting Max looked slightly sad, he let out a half whine and hopped down, then began sniffinf Seiko's shoes, and the area around her feet.

Tom turned to walk toward the park, not looking at Seiko as he went.

"Hurt." He said curtly. "But I'm surviving. What did you need to talk about?" Part of him didn't want to be so closed off, but it seemed like it was the only way to keep from over reacting. And some where deep down he was worried she would say something equally as concerning as the last time they talked.

Actually he was rather convinced of it.

Seiko blinked a few times, of course it was within his rights to be less than happy with her, but she hadn't known Tom before his dungeon, she had only known him to be polite, if very awkward. She sighed.

"I know you are upset with me, I understand that but I didn't mean to hurt you, it just seemed the better choice than in the end us both hurting each other or not focusing on Paradise or..." She trailed off, unsure what else to say, she reached out her hand, intending to put it on his shoulder in an attempt to comfort him, her fingers brushed his shoulder briefly as she quickly withdrew them, again remembering this was Tom she was dealing with.

"I was worried, you haven't come back to school, I thought something might have happened to you, or you might have vanished off."

Tom slipped his hands into his pockets and looked at her.

"I'm not upset with you." He realized he was probably simply upset, but he refused to burden Seiko with his thoughts on the matter. He agreed to the arrangement, which meant it wasn't her responsibility to make him feel better.

"And you have already made your reasons clear. They were logical, and so I accepted them." Tom looked away from Seiko, and toward the ground.

Max had run ahead of them, to the end of his leash, he picked a random spot on the ground and began smelling it furiously.

"I had been contemplating not returning to Nanakamado. We need to focus on Paradise, and stopping the angels, saving lives, saving Iburi... that's more important then me going to school so I can get roped into the upcoming culture festival." Tom shrugged.

"Besides I'm not learning anything I don't already know, I can easily get a GED once this is all over, and anyone I actually care about seeing is on the team."

"Not upset with me... But, upset anyway? I know I didn't do things very tactfully, just because it was logical doesn't mean you aren't allowed to be sad." She watched Max for a few moments, listening to Tom.

"That's a stupid reason Tom, everything to do with Paradise happens at the school, not coming back just means you are going to miss things when they happen. How can you watch people at the school who might be victims if you are just going to stay home?" She stopped and looked at him, and for once in all the time she had known him she looked actually disappointed in him.

"Not only that, but you need to keep coming to school to retain some normality in your life, yes Paradise is the most important thing, but so is staying sane Tom. Besides I'll... We'll miss you."

Tom looked back at Seiko.

"I know, it's part of the school, but sitting there watching the school, waiting for someone to get thrown in isn't investigating." He paused.

"I... I trust the team. I don't need to do it all. I can focus on the clues, and maybe stop our enemies before they do any worse." He shrugged slightly, before continuing to walk.

"Being normal can come later, I recognize that it's important, and might be something I want, but it's... not as important as the fight we're in the midst of. I think it must be hard for some of the others to stay normal while involved in all of this, but for me... trying to build a normal life from the ground up? I mean it seems like that's a bad idea for the same reason the whole relationship thing is a bad idea." His tone made it clear that he fully believed the logic behind the statement, and wasn't just trying to throw it back in her face.

"Plus... you still see me."

"What exactly is it you think you can investigate outside the school?" She raised an eyebrow. "As far as I can tell most of the clues have come from the school. That along with the fact it is where the team constantly is. If you stay away you will get out of the loop, part of being a team is being together, not one person going all lone wolf." She watched Max for a few moments, the antics of a puppy were far easier to watch than the expressions of her ex-boyfriend.

"Becoming normal isn't something you have to build, you can learn it just from being around your friends. And the team are your friends." She still felt hurt by his comment concerning the 'relationship thing', but chose to ignore it, he didn't really seem to want to talk about their short and failed relationship much, so she let it be.

"I'll only see you if I come to your house, which is... Probably not the best thing to do." She said delicately, Tom's father was not someone she wanted to come face to face with again soon.

Tom reached a hand up to his face rubbing his eyes for a second.

"I can still investigate the school, I just wouldn't be attending class or social events... school sponsored social events. If the team get together for things I will attend." He slipped his hands back into his pockets, and continued walking.

"You could always call me."

She shrugged. "I could, but it means you could easily just not answer and ignore me. I understand if you wouldn't want to see me, I mean like, after what happened..." She gave a one shouldered shrug.

"I don't want to... Well I don't want to stop spending time with you, and if I have to call you each time it means you can easily just avoid me." She sounded fairly casual as she spoke, looking sideways at Tom and sighing. "I still really care about your friendship you know?"

"I already told you I'm not upset with you. But yes, this is... hard at least a little. But I've never been one to run from something that hurt, and I'm not about to start now. I've just been..." Tom waved a hand as he thought of how to respond.

"...trying to stabilize myself. But I wouldn't be out here if I intended to ignore people. If I'm spending time away I don't have the luxury of ignoring my friends. Nor would I want to."

"It isn't usually easy, it's normal for it to be difficult and to be painful for a while." She chewed her lip, she had expected Tom to be upset, after all this had never happened to him before. She felt guilty to have caused him to feel like this, but it was the better choice in the end, for the both of them.

"You'll be okay in the end though, usually it is just your brain getting used to things changing, I mean, it was a relationship that lasted only about a month, so it will fade." She tried to sound reassuring, it was the least she could do.

"It's just weird, not having you at school, I know we aren't in the same class, but still, we got used to having you there."

"How I feel is unimportant..." Tom frowned slightly. "Well... I mean... there's nothing i can do about it, aside from accept it, and try to continue on." He cocked his head to the side.

"It's... actually a lot like a really bad injury. Nothing can be done for it, poking it only makes it hurt worse, you simply need to just leave it, try to function while it's there and wait for it to heal." Tom sounded... oddly intrigued by this realization. Then he shrugged.

"I'll still be around, just not in classes."
