[The class has been allowed to chat while they're working on an in-class math assignment. Kai, whose desk is near enough to Kou's, looks up from his seemingly incomprehensible notes and turns to his classmate.]

Do you understand this at all?

[He sounds - and looks - a little tired, and almost fake, like he's trying hard to preserve an air of normalcy about him.]

[Kou glances over his notes. He feels satisfied; maths was understandable, and something he could grasp. The friendships he had made were more complicated; in a year this would be over and he would be doing something new, and be away from them.]

[He notices Kai's exasperation and decides to be helpful.]

[He nods in reply, and sit backs and waits for whatever needs asking. He doesn't like saying much.]

[Well, at least one of them does. Kai leans over, holding out his notebook and pointing to a problem at the bottom of the page.]

I keep getting this answer but I don't think it's right. Uh, does it look like I did anything wrong here?

[In his frustration, Kai has missed the fact that he skipped in important step in the middle, throwing off the whole problem. He yawns.]

I can't even stay awake in this class...

[A throwaway comment, an attempt at being conversational. He doesn't know Kou that well, but he'd like to try.]

[Kou takes the notebook. He follows the problem in order and comes to what is simply a gaping hole. He doesn't fathom how Kai could've missed the whole thing unless he fell asleep, as said.]

[He looks appraisingly at Kai for a moment before explaining.]

You look like a person who doesn't sleep properly. If you did, this wouldn't be a problem.

[He is concerned. He's just got a ways to go before he feels more comfortable in his own skin.]

	[Kai looks puzzled. That seems like an odd thing to comment on.] Yeah, not lately. Everything... [He shrugs and makes a face, indicating what he means by "everything."] It's been weird lately. [A frown, almost melancholy. He doesn't appear to realize he's making it.] So, yeah, do you see anything wrong? (Reply to this) (Parent)
