The park was one of the smaller ones in the neighborhood, and for the most part, it wasn't much used. Not too far away, there were bigger, better-kept parks with brightly coloured playground equipment for children and parents, as well as more beat-down, grungy, and off-road options for bad kids to hang out at. This one was slightly overgrown and bordered by unruly hedges, normally only used for the jogging path that ran through it by people looking for a little peace and quiet on their run.

Kosaka was one such person. It was unusual for him to see other people on this route for his evening jog, though he did pass the occasional fellow runner, and he would nod his head and continue on his way whenever this did occur. Today was even more unusual - someone was lying stretched out in the middle of the path ahead.

It didn't take him very long to discern that something was wrong. The person was actually a teenage girl - a student at Nanakamado, given the uniform, with dyed blonde hair. As he drew closer, he could see that she was hurt. Blood at the roots of her hair and large, lumpy lesions across her cheek and forehead were the most obvious signs of damage - that and the fact that she was unconscious. Her arm was bent at a strange angle, probably broken, and her clothes, though mostly unripped, were slightly blotted with blood wherever they were thin enough. She was breathing. With trembling hands, he checked for a pulse, and found one.

Kosaka wasted no time in calling for an ambulance, pausing only to locate and look through the girl's wallet in search of her name: Yukizaki Seiko.
