Who: Masami, Toru
What: Pre-Idol Panic
When: Just before the idol contest
Where: Backstage
Why: Because they both wish they were anywhere but where they are.

Masami sat in a secluded section of the backstage area of the idol contest, wrapped in a blanket. Why had she let her kendo teammates tell her what to do? If it had just been Hitomi it would've been OK, but Natsuko and Youko were... probably the ones responsible for signing her up in the first place. Those two and Miyuki had assured her that they had everything figured out, but they hadn't actually told her what their plan was until only a few hours ago... most likely intentionally, so she wouldn't have the time to change the plans.

So it was that Masami was dressed in what was essentially nothing more than a bikini top and a pair of really short shorts, though nobody currently could see it due to the blanket she'd appropriated to hide herself. She sipped some tea in an effort to calm down, but for once it didn't have very much of an effect. She could only hope nobody would notice her, and that they'd somehow forget that she was signed up for the stupid idol contest in the first place.

But since when had she ever been so lucky?

Toru was hardly any more calm than Masami as he entered the room. Just moments before, he had bid farewell to Yoshimi so that the two of them could make final preparations for the idol competition, and his nerves had flooded back. What was he even thinking? Why had this happened? How did Seiko exactly convince him to dress the way he did? All of these thoughts ran around his mind in an ever-tightening circle, leaving him flustered and horrified even before he got on stage.

Seeing Masami there was almost a comfort, even if the red wig threw off his ability to identify her for a moment. She was normally so calm and cool in Paradise, so it was a bit shocking to see her hiding under a blanket. On the other hand, I'd be hiding under a blanket, too, if I had one....

"H-hey, Sakuraba-senpai! How're things going? I-is your costume all ready?"

Masami was so absorbed in sipping her tea and trying to distance herself from her current predicament that it took her a moment to register that Toru had spoken to her. Startled for a second, she looked up at him.

"Oh... Ishinomori-san. Umm... I guess my costume's ready but... It's really embarrassing and I really don't... want to go out there dressed like this," she said, pulling her blanket more tightly around her.

Toru tugged at his cat tail, and looked more sheepish than usual by doing so.

"Well, I'm in the same boat, you know? B-but..." He sighed. Was this honest? Or good? He didn't like to see somebody like Masami this down, either way.

"But I'm still gonna go out there and do my best! I've got no choice but to, s-so I might as well do a good job." With a surprising amount of bravery, he put one hand on Masami's blanketed shoulder.

"S-so, y-you don't need to show me the costume... just make sure to go out on stage and try your hardest!" Besides, he thought, I can already tell from your wig that you're dressed as Yomi from Heaven-Shattering Korrin Galan.

Somehow, seeing how well Toru was doing with the whole situation helped Masami cheer up a bit - not too much, but it was definitely an improvement. "Thanks, Ishinomori-san," she said as she relaxed herself some and took a sip of her tea.

"I'm sorry, I was just... well, surprised," Masami began, "My teammates said they'd handle everything, then sprung this costume on me only right before I had to come get changed. What are they trying to do...?" she wondered aloud, seeming to have (mostly) regained her bearings.

"Umm... so who signed you up for this? I can't imagine that you wanted to be in this yourself," Masami asked.

Toru leaned against the wall next to Masami, self-consciously tugging at his tail and wondering if prayer to any number of fictional deities would do anything to make his shorts longer. As of yet, he'd had no luck.

"T-that's not too different from what happened to me! It... it really sucks that they did that to you, senpai..." He took a moment to wish that his shirt was looser, while he was at it.

"Dunno who signed me up... s-someone thought it'd be funny to enter me, s-so it really could've been anybody... a-and Tank-senpai picked the costume stuff... so, er... yeah."

Masami nodded. "I think a lot of people who are in this didn't sign themselves up. Maybe at least half. I think somebody even signed up Retsu-senpai. Though, I guess there are the people like Shirou-kun and Suzuki-senpai who signed up on their own too..."

"I think the team just wanted to see if I could pull off something like this... But still..."

"Anyway, it was Yukizaki-senpai who thought of that outfit for you? I... guess it's the kind of thing I'd expect out of her, actually." Thinking of Seiko made Masami remember something. "Oh, I umm... actually wanted to apologize to you for what happened in Kondo-san's area of... that place. I know you didn't have a choice, but I really could have just focused on the enemy without attacking you too..." She bowed her head to Toru with that.

"...Retsu-senpai? R-really? The President? I-I guess that makes it a little better..." Toru gulped. Would he be able to avoid looking like a total idiot in front of competitors like that?

"It's still terrible that you're stuck like this... N-no student of Nanakamado ought to have to do something like this just because somebody else signed them up..."

It surprised Toru that Masami would apologize for such a thing, and it showed on his face. "In Kondo-san's... oh! N-no, that's fine! We were being mind-controlled and attacking you, right? It's only normal to want to knock out the big bad's flunkies before you kill it! In fact, were I in your situation, I'd have done the same thing!"

Masami started to say something back to Toru, but whatever it was wound up being cut off when a certain person swaggered up to them.

Shirou was dressed in that outfit he had worn before Ito-sensei's new gym uniforms had come in, and he looked just as ridiculous now as he did back then.

"Sakuraba-senpai! I almost didn't recognize you! I've been looking around all over for you! That wig really makes you look different! Oh, and hi to you too Ishinomori-san! Are you two both ready to go out there and amaze everyone? I'm pretty psyched..." Shirou just went on and on, without a chance for anyone to get a word in edgewise. After a long-winded monologue including several mentions of conviction and willpower, he finally ended it with his signature line.

"ALL RIGHT! I'M PUMPED NOW!"

If Toru was surprised then, he was now in full-blown shock. It wasn't enough for the world to inflict this competition upon him, apparently. It had to throw in Shirou, too. He found himself attempting to back away, only to run into the wall and flatten himself against it.

"O-oh, h-hi, Mizoguchi-kun! I, er... I l-like your costume!"

The speech made him figurative crumple for a bit. Shirou was just so... loud. But as it went longer, it actually inspired a bit of hope within Toru. This kind of stuff happened in anime, too, right? So it was that Toru responded.

"I think I'm pumped, too! Thanks, Mizoguchi-kun!"

Of course Masami's luck wasn't bad enough. No, apparently Shirou needed to be present. Naturally. While Toru flattened himself against the wall, Masami just wrapped her blanket more tightly around herself.

Sadly, unlike Toru, Masami wasn't quite as inspired by Shirou's speech. If anything it just made her want to disappear even more.

"Umm... Shirou-kun," she said, standing up. "Thanks for that speech but umm... Ishinomori-san and I were talking about Anti-Bullying Club stuff..."

"Sakuraba-senpai! I know you must be nervous about going out there and facing all those fans of yours, but take heart! Everyone loves you, Sakuraba-senpai! I'm sure you'll do a great job out there! I believe in you! And even if you don't believe in yourself, you can always believe in me, who believes in you!"

Shirou had apparently not noticed Masami's attempts to shoo him away at all. In other stunning news, the sun rose in the morning. Luckily(or unluckily), it looked like the show was starting.

"Hey, it looks like it's almost time!" Shirou said, before breaking out into some... strange English. "ARE YOU READY GUYS? PUT THE GUNS ON!" He turned and began heading toward the stage before turning back and adding a couple more random English lines. "LET'S GET THIS PARTY STARTED! HERE WE GO!!!!!"
