1. Different universes have no knowledge of each other in the beginning. Characters know their history from the HP 'verse, but have only knowledge of the Medieval!'verse while living in the Medieval!'verse, and the same for other universes.
2. Characters have their wands and can use magic as they wish. The more they use the magic of Hogwarts, the more aware they are that they aren't in their own universe. The more the adapt to their surroundings, the more they succumb to the magic.
3. As characters continue using magic of the Hogwarts universe, they become more aware of the universes surrounding them, remembering facts as they move between them.
