Action Scene: Fallen Comrades
Lucius slipped away from the others after giving Narcissa a discreet signal and strode down the corridors. A few children scampered away from him in fear, but he paid them no mind. He'd heard his fallen 'comrades' had been laid out in one of the abandoned classrooms, and that was where he was headed.
He sniffed disdainfully when he found the room, batting a few cobwebs away as he approached his former allies. "No respect for the dead," he muttered, closing Mulciber's eyes before reaching into his pocket. "What's this? Oh, you poor fool." He closed the locket bearing Old Lady Mulciber's image and put it back in the man's pocket before reaching for the wand that rested on his chest and then quickly dropping it back. "Oak. Pfft. Ridiculously Hufflepuff."
He stood and went to the next body, straightening Thicknesse's collar before searching him. He found a small bag of gold, which he returned to the hidden pocket within the dead man's robes, and an amulet that radiated Dark energy. This, he pocketed. "Willow wand, hmm? I always wondered about you, Pius. I believe my wife will find this more useful than you."
One by one he searched the bodies of the Death Eaters, sparing a few pitying words for each of them. He collected three wands he thought might work well for Narcissa, and several Dark artifacts. McNair's wand felt well enough in his own hand, and after he zapped a spider with a particularly nasty curse, felt satisfied with it enough to keep it. None of the wands were hawthorn, and he realized Draco would have to make do with one of the extras until they found a more suitable replacement. Perhaps if Draco conducted himself in a way more suited to a Malfoy, the Potter brat would return his wand. He would have a chat with his family as soon as possible so they could work out their newest strategy.
Bellatrix's body he sneered at, tempted for a moment to do something Muggle, like spitting in her face. "I cannot say I am sorry to see you go, you lunatic bitch," he muttered. "I should have slipped a dagger between your ribs the first chance I had. Do not believe for a moment this is for your benefit. Chester! Jinx!"
Within moments, two Malfoy house-elves appeared, bowing and scraping with their high-pitched voices. Lucius cut them off with a glare. "Take this one back to the Manor. Lay her out in the ... somewhere out of the way. The gold salon." He conjured a velvet bag and put the Dark objects he'd found inside. "And take this to my study. Your Mistress and I will be along shortly." As an afterthought, he added, "I would like roast duck for dinner."
The two elves hopped from foot to foot and Jinx started wailing for 'Mistress Bella'. It soured his stomach.
"What on earth are you waiting for? Out!"
When the house-elves had departed with Bellatrix's body and his newfound treasures, he transfigured shrouds of plain black for the corpses, waving his new wand until they all settled into place.
Finally, he gave them all one last nod. "A good journey to you all," he said, and slipped out of the room again, thankful he was not one of them. Of course, a Malfoy had more sense than to stand and fight a losing battle.
He and his family were alive, and for the moment, free. He would do everything in his power to see they remained so.
