Wolf disagreed with Bishop. He felt as though his situation was much harder than theirs. As far as he knew they had no ties, no significant connections. He, on the other hand, had an entire tribe counting on him. Every decision he made affected them and he took his job very seriously. From Wolf’s point of view neither of the two people in front of him seemed like the non-trouble making type. They’d played the Lion’s game and even stolen from them, even if it was minor. Perhaps in the rational world those weren’t reasons to attempt to kill or capture someone but this wasn’t a rational world and it was the Mountain Lions they were talking about.
Wolf was not an expert at reading people but over the last two years he’d certainly improved at it. From the vibes and body language he was picking up on he had already come to trust the girl more. Of course Wolf’s trust was not something that was given lightly and very few people ever earned it in its entirety. He would play the game with the drifters as long as the ball stayed in his court. The moment their presence or actions gave Wolf even the slightest inkling of trouble for the tribe they were gone. He may have rightfully earned the reputation of the righteous leader but he could drop these two into the Lion’s mouth as quick as anyone.
Wolf couldn’t hide the look of disbelief when Jace mentioned that the Mountain Lions might have wanted to rob them. He couldn’t fathom what the two of them could possibly have that the Mountain Lions wanted. He looked even more skeptical when Jace dolled out the list of their supposed possessions. Ammunition was about as rare as pizza these days and Wolf had no reason to believe that what these two were saying was true. For all he knew the two of them could have stolen the guns from the Lions themselves and brought down the wrath all on their own.
It was after Jace threw his subtle offer at Wolf that Wolf finally spoke. In all honesty Wolf was not a big fan of weapons, least of all guns. Still, there was no lie that that sort of thing gave one a much greater advantage over one’s enemies. If everything this man was saying was true this entire situation could end up very messy, very fast. “Alright, I think I see what you‘re getting at. Supposing that you do have this supply of weapons, and it is what the Lions were after...” Wolf looked mostly at Bishop when he spoke. “You have to trust us, and the first step in that direction is telling me where you have your weapons hidden. If they are there then we have to move them. Obviously if that was what the Lions were after they’ve been watching you and the last thing that we want is for them to get their hands on more weapons.”
Wolf pushed back from the table and stood to gather the dishes. He turned from them, awaiting their decision as he placed the dishes in the sink.
