It was unlikely that Wolf was doing any of this intentionally to freak them out, but if that was his goal he couldn't have chosen a more effective way to do it. Jace was starting to wish that Wolf would just turn around and punch him in the face or something because at least then he'd know how to react. It was hard to say exactly why, there was a long list of possible reasons, but Jace was as completely thrown by this as he'd been by anything in a very long time.
No matter how strange it was though, he wasn't about to turn down the plate of food set in front of him. It was only after he'd eaten more than half of it, at an almost astonishing speed, that it occurred to him that the food might be poisoned. That slowed him down. He didn't know what was more unsettling, that that had only occurred to him much too late or that it had occurred to him at all. Who in their right mind would poison them when there were so many much simpler ways to get rid of them? And where the hell would they even get the poison? It was possible that he was being excessively paranoid. The thought stuck in his head though and he continued eating with far less enthusiasm than before.
Bishop wasted no time in giving Wolf the straight story about what had happened, the same way she'd told it to Otter. Jace's version of the story would certainly have been less direct and was far more likely to change to suit his mood and motivations, so it was probably for the best that Bishop spoke first. He listened as she quickly covered all the basic facts, leaving him to fill in some of the details towards the end.
"I guess they weren't expecting me to come back so soon, because I caught them by surprise when I showed up. There was a fight and we managed to get away, but not without taking some damage. One of the bastards put a knife into Bishop and their leader tried to put a bullet in my chest as we were making our escape." That was an extremely simplified version of the story, but he was hoping they could get away with giving as few details as possible right now. "We were in pretty bad shape, but luckily we made it as far as town, and that's when one of your people found us."
