Characters: Daryn & Remy Setting: Remy's house, sometime before the meeting Summary: Daryn drops by to check in Rating: low
The last week or so was a whirlwind. The explosion had turned everything on it’s head and Daryn had tried hard to act first and process it all later. She’d taken on too much and pushed herself too hard, trying to both heal the injured and continue to help locate and dig for those who’d been trapped. When all was said and done, and everyone was out and safe, Daryn was physically and emotionally exhausted. She’d tried to keep the worst of it from Ashe and Phoenix, but truth be told, she was practically incoherent by the time she let herself just stop and rest. The bleeding and the seizures were bad, but finally her body and mind just lapsed into a deep sleep that lasted several days.
Awake and alert now, and still stubborn as ever, Daryn had insisted on going to see Remy. She’d worried about him being trapped, but she was able to communicate with him briefly and knew that he was uninjured at least. Other than that, she hadn’t been able to see him until now. Standing outside his door, she knocked lightly, hoping that he and Zayne would not be opposed to company. Daryn was still in far more pain than she’d expected, she’d taken on too many other people’s injuries and her own healing was slowed due to the over-use of her abilities. Still, she was determined to check in on her friends, all of them, and then she’d sleep it off later. Maybe. Probably.
---
Remy had managed to keep himself relatively sane for the time that he was trapped with the others in the sub basement of the building. It helped that he could still talk to Zayne and Daryn and the other people he cared about. He also spent the time focused on the other people trapped with him. He was good at ignoring his own needs and pains when he was focused on others. Remy rarely used his creation ability so he wasn’t overly practiced in how it physically affected him. He knew enough about powers and how they worked to have a guess but he wasn’t prepared for how wiped out he would be once he stopped moving.
Remy was the last one out. Which anyone who knew him would expect. Once out he managed to make it home, with Zayne’s help before passing out. It took every ounce of energy for the two of them to manage to make sure they were fed enough to attempt recovery. Remy was to the point now where he could at least function even if he was still completely exhausted. It was a good thing the couch was halfway between the kitchen and the bedroom. Remy had just managed to grab himself a sandwich and find a spot on the couch when there was a knock and he immediately knew it was Daryn. Its unlocked, come on in. Speaking telepathically took less energy than yelling.
--- Daryn smiled faintly and opened the door with her free hand. Stepping inside, she carried a bunch of food, courtesy of Ashe. Spotting Remy on the couch, she was glad to see that he looked okay, even if he was tired. He was entitled to be. Hope I’m not interrupting your rest. I just wanted to check in, and bring this by for you and Zayne.
--
Remy smiled when she came in. Setting his sandwich aside he pushed himself up off of the couch and made his way over to her. He was glad that she was at least doing well enough to move around. She looked exhausted, much like he felt. Stepping over to her he took the food. “You’re not interrupting at all. I was just telling myself I needed to get moving enough to come see how you were and to visit everyone else.” He set the food on the table then motioned for her to join him on the couch. “Sit for a few. How are you?”
---
She handed over the food and then took the offered seat with a little shrug. I’m alright. Much better than the last few days, thankfully. How are you feeling? And how is Zayne doing?
--
Remy sat down beside her, turning to face her. “I’m exhausted. Which shouldn't surprise anyone, least of all you and me.” He smiled at her. “Zayne is exhausted too. And I suspect you’re much the same. You and Zayne overworked yourselfs helping people. I would expect nothing less. Fortunately the fact that you’re moving around says you didn’t completely destroy yourself. I’m glad for that. Hopefully you’re letting Ashe fuss over you a bit.” He gave her a wink.
Taking a deep breath he let it out slowly. “Have you seen anyone else? I haven’t gotten myself to move to check on people. Which I feel makes me a pretty shitty leader.”
---
Daryn nodded with a little smile. She was incredibly thankful that Ashe was there, both to help her and to look after Phoenix when she couldn’t. It was a difficult few days initially, but I’m fine now. I’ll probably be sore for longer than I’d like, but it’s a small price to pay to be able to help. You are my first stop, I’m hoping to make the rounds later and make sure everyone is alright. You are not a shitty leader, you have done so much. Everyone knows that.
--
Remy scrubbed his hands over his face and sighed softly. “Sorry. Moment of weakness there.” He said softly then took a deep breath, holding it for a moment before letting it out slowly. “I’m glad you’re okay. This … this whole thing could have been so much worse. If I could I would thank every person who lifted a hand to help.” And he meant it too. “Have you heard anything? About what happened? How or why?”
---
Daryn studied Remy quietly, a little worried about. Deciding not to push for now, she just shook her head in response. Just rumors, some say it was a mutant that lost control, others think it was on purpose. I am sure there’s other options too. I’ve tried not to focus on those thoughts though, everyone is still a little hysterical about things. It’s hard to be objective.
--
Remy had managed to stave off claustrophobia while he had been trapped but only by flat out ignoring it. That panic seemed to creep in on him now and then now that he was out until he could push it away. It was making him edgy and he didn’t like it. Leaning his head back against the couch he listened to her comments. “That’s about what I suspected. The rumors and hysterics. I can’t hardly make sense of what I’m getting from most people.” He and wondered if it was just him and he was really losing his mind but if Daryn felt the same way maybe he was just overreacting. “I’m sure there’s not going to be an investigation. At least not a real one. So we’re unlikely to learn the truth from the authorities.”
—-
Daryn could hear his thoughts and feel the tension inside. She knew that feeling all too well, and it had spiked in herself as well since the explosion, but for different reasons. You’re not losing your mind. It’s just very overwhelming, for everyone, and we hear that on top of our own worries. Don’t push your own feelings and needs away anymore, it will only make things worse. Trust me, you don’t want to lose yourself in the midst of all of this chaos.
She agreed that there wouldn’t be an investigation, but that didn’t mean they couldn’t find the truth elsewhere. We can look into it ourselves if need be. Once we’re both in a bit better shape.
--
Remy took a deep breath, holding it in before slowly blowing it out. He nodded at her words. She was right, of course. He knew that. She knew that. And nothing she was saying to him was earth shattering. But there was something about needing to hear it from someone who very much understood for it to be able to sink in. “You’re right, of course.” He voiced. “I’m just not good at feeling those feelings.” He gave her a crooked smile. “I’m not used to feeling vulnerable and weak. It doesn’t sit well.” He took another deep breath, calming himself. “It wasn’t easy to be the one down there needing to be rescued. I think that’s what’s bothering me more than anything else. Well except the whole situation and everyone being in danger. But you get my point.” He shook his head at himself. Remy you’re not making sense. At least Daryn usually followed his train of thought, even when it derailed or detoured.
“Yes. Definitely. And I’m sure we won’t be the only ones.” He figured if Phobia hadn’t going poking around yet he would soon.
---
Daryn reached over and gently took Remy’s hand, squeezing it lightly. As she did, a faint, cool feeling spread over him briefly in an attempt to help soothe him. She wasn’t sure if it would be helpful, but she knew there weren’t really the right words to help in this case.
Hearing his thoughts about Phobia, she smiled faintly and shrugged. He hasn’t gone poking yet, that I know of. But he did have a good idea. To try to contact the mainland again. I have a few ideas, but what do you think?
--
Remy felt what she was doing to try to soothe him and he smiled at her. It did help. He could feel his raw nerves calming down and the tightness in his chest let go. Thank you.. The words weren’t enough to express his gratitude but it was all he had at the moment.
Remy raised an eyebrow at her comment about contacting the mainland. “Seems like a good idea to me. What did you have in mind?”
--
Daryn was glad that the small gesture was something that Remy found helpful. Although she was sure that she’d keep a bit of a closer eye on him from now on. She didn’t want him to lose himself in everything the way she so often lost herself before. She squeezed his hand again lightly before releasing it.
Well, I am not sure what Phobia wants to try, but we could always get in touch with our tech connections and see what they can do. And, maybe it’s time I tested the limits of my telepathy again. It’s been years since I tried to use it to contact the mainland, maybe I can get something this time around.
--
Remy often forgot that his telepathy came with a healthy dose of empathy. It just added that much more impact to the thoughts around him, especially when emotions were running high like with the collapse. That and being trapped in close quarters with a group of people who were all feeling the strains of claustrophobia and panic just amped up his own anxiety. And he didn’t have a way to fight back against it. But he was feeling better about it as emotions settled down.
Remy nodded as she spoke. “Definitely a good idea to get in touch with the tech connections. I’ll handle that while you test your limits. Try not to overdo it and hurt yourself okay?” He gave her a wink and a smile. He’d be watching out for her too.
---
Daryn just nodded and offered a faint smile. If she was going to try, she was going to push herself. And that was probably going to hurt, but hopefully it would only be temporary. I’ll try. Is there anything else I can do to help you? And Zayne?
--
Remy knew she would push herself. He would if the roles were reversed. But he didn’t want her hurt so he’d say it regardless. He shook his head at her question. “No. You have enough going on with Phoenix and Ashe and everything else and you’ve already done a lot. I think we can handle each other now.” He smiled at her.
---
Daryn shook her head and reached into her bag, pulling out a crayon drawing and handing it to him. Phoenix made this for you. And she wants you and Phobia to come over for a pizza party. When you and Zayne are feeling up to it.
--
Remy took the drawing from her and grinned huge. “This is wonderful. Thank you.” He laughed softly and nodded. “That sounds like a good time. Do you think she would let Zayne come too? I wouldn’t want her to feel like he was crashing her party.”
---
Daryn shook her head with a smile. No, I think she’d love to have him there. She’s more curious now, and comfortable. She wants to meet everyone, but I told her we need to be safe and take it slow. She’s just happy to go outside every once in a while.
Remy nodded. “Well then we will just have to make sure we visit more often. And count us in on the pizza party. Give us a couple days and we’ll definitely be up for it so whatever fits into her schedule. And yours of course.” He chuckled softly. “She’s quite the intelligent little thing. I can’t say I’m surprised about her being curious. You are her mom after all.”
--
Daryn nodded and looked down with a smile. She is wonderful, but I don’t think that has anything to do with me. She’s just naturally that way, thank goodness. I worry that everything will affect her deeply, I suppose that could always come up, regardless of how well she is doing now.
--
“Oh I think that has a lot to do with you.” Remy grinned widely but it didn’t stay as she went on to talk about her fear. He nodded understanding where she was coming from. Even if he didn’t have a child of his own he could understand that feeling. “Unfortunately you’re probably correct. But in my opinion you’re doing everything you can at the moment. She seems pretty happy under the circumstances. And when we get out of this damn place you’ll both be better off.”
---
Daryn sighed and nodded slightly. Do you really think we’ll actually be able to get away from here? I don’t want her to have to grow up like this.
--
“Honestly? Yes.” Remy met her eyes. He believed it down to his toes and it was evident on his face even without her telepathy. “I believe that eventually this island will be opened up and our kind allowed back into the world. I don’t know how many of us will still be alive by that point. I don’t expect to be one of the lucky ones. But I believe in humanity and that right will eventually win out.”
---
Daryn frowned but nodded, looking down again. I just want her to be safe and free. With out without me. Although there’s nothing I want more than to see her grow up and be happy. Daryn knew that she would still fight for their cause, even if it meant having to send Phoenix away to keep her safe. It would destroy her, but she would do it without hesitation, it was the only way.
---
Remy nodded at her words. “I want the same. For everyone here. That’s what we’re fighting for. But I don’t need to tell YOU that. You’re the major reason any of us are even here and fighting. So just keep in mind you’re not alone in this.” He smiled at her. “We’ll get out of here. I truly believe that.”
