Characters: Daryn & Ashe
Setting: The Facility, after the explosion
Summary: talking, confessions and getting in position to help
Rating: low
Ashe was finding it harder and harder to go to work. He was enjoying spending time with Daryn and Phoenix. The little girl was absolutely wonderful. Her curiosity was infectious and he found himself sometimes just watching her. He had been around kids as he bounced between foster homes as a kid but he had never seen one like this. Not in a more … fatherly position. He didn’t see himself as her father. That was just thinking too fast. Maybe more of an uncle? Either way he was an adult figure in her life yet he felt like he was learning more from her than her from him.
It was a normal morning and Ashe was working his usual job so he was nowhere near the Facility when he heard the explosion. Much like everyone else he dropped what he was doing, quickly turned off all of the burners and dashed out of the building. It took a few moments for everyone to figure out the direction of the sound. WHen they figured it out it was as if the wave of people changed directions and headed toward The Facility. It didn’t take getting very close to see the damage and to know that there were people trapped and hurt, or worse. He began looking around for his friends that he knew worked in The Facility and he immediately hoped Daryn was nowhere near it.
---
Daryn should have been in the Facility that morning. She had planned to go in to pick up supplies, then go to the clinic for the day. But that morning she decided to linger a little longer with Phoenix, and because of that the little girl likely saved her life. Leaving her daughter with a trusted Faction member at the safehouse, Daryn had been headed in the direction when explosion occured. Immediately, the thoughts of all those on the Island changed to curiosity and then panic.
Daryn broke into a run and when she reached the Facility, she immediately rushed to help. Using her telekinesis and her bare hands, she started digging through the rubble for those that might have been close to the exits or exterior walls. Focusing her telepathy, she tried to focus on where the thoughts were in relation to the damage, in effect locating where some were trapped. While she kept her focus on them, what was more disturbing and distracting were the thoughts of those that felt like they were beginning to fade away.
Hearing nearby familiar thoughts, Daryn stopped her digging and looked around. Spotting Ashe, she turned and ran to him, hugging him tightly. She was relieved to see that he was okay, and worried about those who weren’t. Thank god you’re okay.
--
Once Ashe got close he froze, trying to decide what to do. He couldn’t very well dig people out with his bare hands, and he didn’t exactly have any powers that would help. And what if trying to dig or move stuff made it worse and people were crushed? His mind was racing and it just made him feel even more frozen in place. He was just trying to make himself move, making himself do SOMETHING when he heard Daryn.
Whipping around he felt a little frantic as he searched for her, she could have been anywhere. But seeing her he immediately let out the breathe he was holding. As she hugged him he held on tightly, practically squeezing her. “I was just thinking that about you.” He said softly. He held on for a while before finally pulling back. He wanted to keep holding on but there were other people who needed help. “I don’t know what to do.”
---
Daryn held tightly to Ashe for a moment before stepping back. She watched him for a moment before looking to the disaster nearby. We can help try to dig out, but you were right, it could make things worse. She hadn’t even realized she was reading his thoughts when she replied. Everything was incredibly loud and confusing in her mind, and it was surprising she was still able to compartmentalize enough to communicate with him and think of what to do next. We can get things from the clinic, help stabilize people here and treat those who are injured.
--
When she looked over at the disaster he did the same. Taking a slow breath he let it out slowly and nodded. He didn’t even think about the fact that he hadn’t said that thought out loud. He had gotten used to Daryn reading his thoughts and he was a bit preoccupied. He turned his attention back to her when she spoke to him again. “That’s a good idea. I can help with that.” Leaning in he stole a quick kiss before taking her hand. “Come on. We’ll go work on that. It looks like they might be organizing people to help figure out what to do to get people out. I’m not help there so you can just direct me what to do. Consider me your sidekick.” He smiled at her then squeezed her hand.
---
Hesitantly, Daryn nodded and squeezed his hand back. I feel like I should be helping more, moving things or trying to locate people. But they will need treatment. And she knew she shouldn’t put herself in danger if it wasn’t absolutely necessary. Phoenix needed her and she couldn’t forget that. She kissed him back lightly and took a deep breath. She needed to stay focused and calm or else she would be no help to anyone. Let’s go get some supplies and set up a triage center nearby.
--
Ashe nodded. “Exactly. I feel the same way. But not all of us can be in there doing that. So we need to leave it for others who are more equipped. And you do what you’re best at. Taking care of people.” He smiled at her and nodded. “Exactly. And while you set up I can keep coming back and grabbing things. And if there are other people available I’ll grab them to help. You can just tell us all what we need and what to do. I’m sure you can handle that.” He smiled at her, teasing her a little. They needed to try to keep their moods up as best as possible.
---
Reluctantly, Daryn walked away from the ruined building with Ashe, glancing back at the others who were running to help. She didn’t like this, she didn’t like any of it. Something felt off, and it wasn’t the obvious disaster. Trying to listen to Ashe, she looked back to him with a slight nod, unable to hide the troubled look on her face. Yes… you’re right.
--
Ashe watched her as they made their way the other direction. He looked back too but then he could tell by looking at her that it was about more than just the fact that they were going the wrong direction. He could also tell she was only half listening. Which didn’t matter, he was mostly just babbling. “Something is on your mind. I know that look on your face.” He said softly. “What’s wrong?”
---
Daryn frowned, more at herself than anything else. She was supposed to be focused and strong and helpful and she felt like none of those things at the moment. I can hear them. Trapped in there, hurt and afraid. I can feel- She stopped herself and just shook her head. It was disturbing enough to be experiencing it, she didn’t need to expose Ashe to that. It just brings back memories.
--
Ashe stopped moving and reached out to take her hands in his. He made her turn to face him and brought her hands up so he could hold them against his chest. “Try to focus on me. Focus on the work. I will do whatever I can to help. I promise.” He pressed a kiss to one of her palms. “If there’s anything. Absolutely anything just say so. Okay?” He took a deep breath then released her hands. “Okay I’ll stop interrupting. We’ll dive in now.”
---
Daryn stopped with him, watching Ashe as he tried to help her feel better. Smiling faintly, she nodded. Thank you. As always, you know just the right thing to say and do to help me feel better. I love you. She kissed him softly and turned back to their walk to the clinic with renewed focus and determination.
----
Seeing her smile was enough to know that he had done the right thing. “I think I’m just .. in tune with you. I’m not usually very good with words.” He was kissing her back before he realized what she had said and his eyes got huge, a goofy smile crossing his face. Taking her hand he squeezed it as he walked with her. “I love you too.” He said softly.
---
At first, Daryn hadn’t realized she’d finally said what she had been thinking for a while now. She felt nervous only for a moment, and then he was returning the sentiment and she was relieved. While she would have prefered to focus on their relationship, she knew it would have to wait until once things were a bit more stable on the island. I know this wasn’t exactly the best time to say that, but it’s how I feel. I’ve never said that to anyone before, and I guess I just realized that I didn’t want to hold back any longer. All of this is just a reminder about how unpredictable things are here and I don’t want to have regrets if something happened to one of us.
--
Ashe tended to just go with the flow unless he actually had a reason to think about something. He spent as much time as possible with Daryn simply because he enjoyed her company. He hadn’t really analyzed her feelings. But the moment she had said how she felt it was like a lightbulb had been turned on. He didn’t even need to think about how he felt. He just knew. The timing mattered little at the moment. They hopefully had a lot of time to talk about it and focus on their relationship once all of their friends and fellow residents were safe. He smiled over at her and squeezed her hand. “I’m glad that you said it. This place … if this place has taught me anything is to enjoy what you have when you have it. And once everyone is safe we can get all mushy.” He winked at her and grinned. “No regrets. Not new ones anyway if we can help it.” Raising their joined hands he kissed the back of hers.
---
As usual, you’re right. She stole another quick kiss and squeezed his hand before focusing on the task at hand. Approaching the clinic, Daryn unlocked the doors and moved inside, gathering the necessary supplies to set up a small treatment camp closer to the collapse site. Hopefully they’ve got a count of approximately how many people are trapped, I can alternate between healing and trying to help locate people. Maybe you can help make a list of people that we know are safe, so there’s some sort of checks and balances.
--
Ashe easily returned the kiss with a smile. They just seemed to play well off of each other. He had felt like that from the beginning with her and the more time they spent together the better they seemed to work. When they got there he followed her lead, nodding and taking mental notes. “Oh that’s a really good idea. Then we can have a better idea of who is where and who might still be missing. I’ll do that.” He made sure to grab a few notebooks and pens so he could record everything. “And depending on how long this goes on I can help get people together ot feed the rescuers. I’m good at that part.” He nodded as if adding another mental note.
---
After grabbing as many things as they could both reasonably carry, Daryn headed with Ashe back toward the site. You may not want to hang out to close to me during this. The healing won’t be pretty, and I may have less control over my telepathy to warn you once things get bad. I just don’t want you to worry, we both need to focus on helping as many people as we can.
--
Ashe looked over at her and had to resist the urge to immediately argue with her. He wanted to protect her and didn’t want anything to happen. But as he looked around he knew that was selfish and foolish. If it were him he’d be putting himself out there. Instead Ashe nodded slowly. “I won’t get in the way or try to hinder you. I can’t promise I won’t check on you once in awhile or worry though.” He smiled. “Do your magic and if you need me I’ll be close.” Stepping over he stole another kiss. “Be careful.” He had to add that as he shifted his focus on doing what he could to help.
