Who: Matty Mackey and Daryn O’Connor
What: BOOM
When: March 5, mid afternoon
Where: The clinic
Matty was bored. Thursday was working and Matty probably should get a job too. It would fill his days better but most of the time he wasn’t aimlessly bored like this. He was today. He wanted to go flying. He wanted to get up high and while he putted around for a bit in his apartment, stretching his wings, it wasn’t quite the same. It was still too cold to go out without a jacket and guards seemed twitchy lately. Plus with people disappearing, Matty didn’t want to risk the skies.
So he was lying on the couch. Maybe Thursday would get out early and entertain him. He seemed busy lately but Matty didn’t know with what. He was out of the loop. He was out of the loop and bored. He sat up. Something smelt weird. He dug his ID card from his pocket. It had been off since he got it. It was warm sometimes, which didn’t make sense. He sniffed it. It smelt… warm? It was warm. He frowned. It really shouldn’t be that warm. He rolled over, crushing his wings under him, as he lifted the card up. It wasn’t body heat warm. It was something else warm. Maybe he should return this one and explain it was faulty. But how was it faulty? It should be just plastic.
“Yoouch,” Matty hissed, dropping the card. He cried out again as it landed on his stomach. He jumped up, the card falling to the floor. Shit. It has actually burnt him. He looked at the card. He grabbed a glass of water and threw the water on the card. It smoked and sizzled. The hell? He poked it with his foot. It seemed dead now. He looked at his stomach. Shit. That hurt. He poked the card again. He should probably get this looked at. He didn’t want an ID shaped scar or anything. He found a shirt and his shoes. He grabbed the card and threw it in a ziplock bag. Then he didn’t have to hold it. He wondered if the clinic was up and running yet. He wondered if Daryn was there.
He headed over there, feeling a bit like a whiner but he trusted the doctor to look and make sure it wasn’t going to kill him. What was up with his ID card? He spotted Daryn and raised a hand to catch her attention.
“Hey-lo!” he called to her.
With the help of some volunteers, Daryn had gotten the inside of the new clinic cleaned up, and most of the new furniture and things in. The place was still significantly lacking in supplies, but Daryn had planned for that and got things together that could be used instead until they had the proper things. She’d been making a list of inventory they’d need when Matty came in. Greeting him with a smile, she put her notes aside. Good afternoon. How are you today?
Matty smiled when he saw Daryn. The place was really coming along. He wanted to help more but he wasn’t really medical minded and it seemed the heavy lifting was over. He didn’t quite know how to help anymore. He didn’t want to get in the way either.
“Actually, that’s why I’m here. Skipping small talk, sorry,” Matty said, “My ID card attacked me and I wanted to make sure I’m not going to end up with a wicked scar.” He held himself off from rambling more, “That is if you don’t mind a patient already?”
Daryn arched a brow at his mention of being attacked by his ID card. Shaking her head, she motioned for Matty to take a seat. I don’t mind at all, it’s what I’m here for. Why don’t you show me what happened and I should be able to make sure you don’t scar.”
Matty sat down. He made a face and said, “I can’t really show you what happened but,” he pulled out the ID that he had locked in the baggie, “It’s broken. It has been heating up, which I can’t even understand how a card can do that but anyway, it was hot and I was holding it and I dropped it and,” he lifted his shirt to show the red burn, “I dosed it with water. I thought about trying an exorcism and trying to use the Power of Christ but who am I to throw God’s name around like that? So regular water it was. It smoked. Maybe hissed. Maybe it’s possessed.”
Daryn listened as Matty explained, arching a brow with a little smile. She only glanced to the ID but then paid more attention to the burn. Regular water was a good choice. I can heal that without a problem, or if you prefer, I can just give you some ointment and bandage it for you. Your choice. Now that she was no longer in the Facility, Daryn didn’t feel the need to hide her ability from fellow mutants.
“Ointment is good,” Matty said, “I mean, no reason to stretch muscles, right? I just don’t want to explain why there is a card shape burn for the rest of my life. Can you imagine that story? I got in a fight with a plastic card and it summoned the depths of hell,” Matty snickered, “Maybe it’s to teach us what happens when you burn ID cards. They burn you back.”
Moving to get some bandages, she found something that would good enough for now, but it wasn’t her first choice of treatment for burns. She went to work on patching him up, still curious about the ID. Not sure it’s supposed to work that way. Did this just happen out of the blue? Was it brief contact with the skin, or sitting there for a while?
“Didn’t think cards could heat up either but here we are,” Matty said. He wondered if it would be easier to take off his shirt. Or he could keep holding it up. “It’s been heating up on and off since I got it. It just got really hot when I was holding it and I dropped it. Then dropped it again, on the floor. So brief.”
Daryn finished quickly enough and gave Matty some extra ointment and bandages to take him. Keep it clean and dry, change the bandage once a day and it should heal nicely without a scar. If it becomes more painful, or become more hot or red, let me know so I can check for infection. She looked to the ID again, considering what he’d shared. They shouldn’t be heating up, for any amount of time. To avoid trouble, keep your ID on you, but make sure it stays on the outside of thicker clothing, just in case it happens again. Hopefully, it won’t.
“Got it, doc,” Matty said, thanking her for the ointment and bandages. He shoved them in his coat pocket. He looked at the ID. He should be taking that too but argh. He didn’t want to, “I was thinking about taking it back to the Facility, see if I can smile pretty for another picture or something. I haven’t heard of anyone else having issues with their new cards so,” he shrugged. He supposed he could start asking. Or prove he was crazy or something. Or just ask for a new one. That seemed logical.
Daryn folded her arms beneath her chest, thinking about the situation. After some consideration, she shook her head no. I wouldn’t. The guards have been on edge lately, and too many people are missing. We don’t want to add you to that list. Just keep it on you, like they want, and don’t let it have direct contact with your skin. I’ll see if I can find out any more information about other people having trouble. In the meantime, just stay safe, okay?
Matty wasn’t quite fond of the idea of going missing either. He was pretty sure if he ever went missing, they would throw him back at Riken and he would rather kill himself than go back. He also never wanted to abandon Thursday like that. Though the thought was the same, he would rather die than do anything that would get Thursday to go back. His wings, though hidden now, cramped at the thought of going back.
Matty shook his head and said, “Totally functioning hotplate of an ID, got it. No questions, no replacements, 100% perfect,” he paused then asked, “Yours is normal? No funky funk?”
Daryn frowned as she ‘overheard’ Matty’s thoughts. But the point was there, just pretend that everything was fine, to avoid more trouble. For now, anyway. Daryn nodded once in response to his question, but now she was more suspicious about the IDs, and the push for everyone to have new ones. So far. I’ll keep an eye on it.
Matty stood up and nodded, “Yeah, Thursday hasn’t said anything either. Just me. Yay!” Well, that was probably for the best. He didn’t want anyone else to get hurt. He looked around the clinic.
“I wanted to ask if you needed anymore hands here,” Matty said, “I’m here if you need anything.”
A little surprised at the offer, Daryn just smiled and shrugged. We can use all the help we can get. I’m really the only one here full-time, if it’s even considered that much. Everyone else just comes and goes, so anyone is welcome to drop in and help out. It’s usually pretty boring stuff, supply runs, checking people in if it gets too busy, or just hanging out and keeping people company if they need it while they’re here.
“I can definitely do the boring stuff; runs, watching people, etc,” Matty said, “I’m not good with what you do. Never mind the lack of healing ability, I, well, I can’t even look after a flaming ID card by myself,” he grinned, “But yeah, I’ll come by and do whatever. I can full time with you, if you want.”
Smiling, Daryn nodded again. Really? That would be nice. I don’t think it will actually be a full time job. But I intend to stay here at least a few hours each day, so that way if someone needs anything I am here to help. It would be nice to have a friendly face here, so that people aren’t afraid to come in.
“Awww, how could they be afraid of you?” Matty said with a smile, “But I can definitely help while you are busy. Or entertain people while they are waiting. Anything, really.” He made a note to swing by as often as he could. This was better than a job. Not as money but in every other way? So much better.
Daryn smirked. People don’t like me being in their heads, I guess. But hopefully they can get over that if they need help. Daryn was glad that Matty would be helping out. He was friendly and would likely help people feel at ease, or distract them from more negative things. I can’t really pay you, but every now and then I can promise baked goods.
Matty lit up when she said baked goods. He grinned at her and said, “Food is the easiest way to get me to do anything.” That was almost true. He smiled again and said, “It’s not a big deal, you being telepathic. I’ve already forgotten a few times.” That was true. Uh-oh. What had he been thinking? He didn’t think of her naked, right? Wait. No. Okay. Good. Wait. Did she see that too? Maybe it was time to go.
She just nodded slowly with a little blink as she caught some of this thoughts. I’m not very good at cooking, but baking and desserts I can do. So, if you have any specific requests, just let me know. It’s the least I can do to repay you for your help here.
That blink had nothing to do with her being naked! He was not thinking about her naked! No! LA LA LA LA. Not there. Oh. Baking. Matty grinned.
“I’m a sucker for anything sweet,” Matty said, “I’m not picky at all. And allergy free. And free of dietary restrictions. Really, just put it in front of me and I’ll love you forever.” Now he was thinking about cake, with thick icing. Hmm, he was getting hungry now.
Laughing silently, Daryn nodded. Alright, I am sure I can come up with something that you’ll like. I’ll make enough so that you can take some home.
“Thursday is a vegan,” Matty said, “I respect that and all but man, dairy. I love me some dairy.” Wait. Daryn knew that Thursday was his roommate, right? Otherwise that didn’t make any sense. Wait. Of course she did. She knew Thursday too.
“I should go. I think the ID scrambled my brain too,” Matty said, “I’ll come by tomorrow. We’ll get this place kicking. Not that we want it to be. You know what I mean.” Right?
Daryn smiled and nodded. I don’t know how to make anything vegan, so… maybe not so much things to take home. But plenty of dairy to enjoy while you’re here. Make sure to keep an eye on that burn, and if anything bothers you, just let me know. I will see you here tomorrow.
