Who: Matty and Hannah What: Tainted Love - or at least talking while Hannah does worky things. When: January 26, 2018, afternoon Where: Out and about
Matty was getting restless. It probably had to do with how cold it was. Or maybe that he couldn’t go anywhere. He was getting restless and restless meant, sometimes, doing stupid things, which he was trying to fly more. He kept going as high as he could. Twice he had guards yell at him and he had to move down before they ran for their weapons. That and guards were getting annoyed because there were a bunch of them that didn’t have their ID cards anymore.
Today Matty was trying to be good. He was trying not to be reckless and do something he’d regret. So he had his big jacket on and his scarf and his hat. Maybe wearing all the clothing would keep it on and he wouldn’t soar up. Maybe he should head to the coffee shop and get something toasty to drink. Or! Maybe he should go and get a couple of toasties and bring something back for Thursday.
Or maybe he could keep walking. Which was what he was doing. He was looking up, trying to figure out what that cloud was when he saw someone in his side vision and he stumbled to a stop, before smacking into her.
“Oh shit!” Matty said, covering his mouth, “I’m so sorry! I didn’t hit you, did I?”
--
As per usual, Hannah had her attention buried in her phone. Well, two phones, to be exact. Double fisting today, she was not paying attention to her surrounding because she had too much damn work today. The new cameras were glitchy still, which was why she was even allowed out of her little hobbit hole for a few hours of sunlight. Checking the new cameras on one phone while screening the sights of the old ones on the other, she did a side by side comparison, all while walking along. So she certainly didn’t see the guy who side swiped her. Until she dropped her phone. “Fuck!”
Reaching down to grab it quickly, she looked up to the guy with a blink. “Sorry. I’ve got a mouth on me sometimes. You all good? I wasn’t looking where I was going, as per usual.”
--
Matty did worry he broke her phone when she swore. He really should be covered in bubble wrap. Or maybe the people around him. But that was usually when his wings were out and he wasn’t completely aware of how wide they were. Then people got smacked in the face. It happened once or twice at the protest.
“It’s okay,” Matty said with a grin, “I wasn’t looking either. Well, I was looking up,” he pointed up then laughed. Yeah, she knew what up was, “I was trying to decide what that cloud was. Now it’s changed. Damn. It got the best of me. You okay? Your phone okay?” She had more than one phone. She was popular. Maybe she was someone important. Were there important people on the island? Probably. He didn’t know. Or really cared. Hello, popular/ important person.
---
Pocketing both phones, just so she wouldn’t drop them, she looked to the guy with a blink. She glanced up to the sky when he pointed, and then looked back to him in confusion. “Wait, what?” She shrugged off his question though. “Yeah, it’s all good, no worries.”
--
“Clouds!” Matty said, as if that explained it, “Don’t you ever look up and try to see shapes in them? Once I saw one, it looked like a dragon. It was so cool. I took a picture but the clouds shifted just enough that it looked like a blob again.” He grinned at her. Or maybe he was just the weird one here. How many people looked up anymore? Then again, what else was there to do on the island? Nothing, really.
---
Hannah glanced up at the sky again to actually look at the clouds. It was a nice idea, to sit and daydream like a normal person, but she had shit to do. Shaking her head, she looked back to the guy and offered a little smile. “I don’t usually pay attention to that sort of thing. It’s cool though.”
---
“What do you pay attention to?” Matty asked, then realised that despite the fact they bumped into each other, she might actually be busy and while he was bored and restless, he may be actually holding her up.
“I’m sorry, are you busy? I can stop distracting you with fluffy things.” Matty tried not to laugh because he was a fluffy thing, wasn’t he?”
---
Hannah furrowed her brow, no one had ever asked her that before. Not that she could remember anyway. Then again, it had been a long time since she was used to having random social interactions with strangers. “Um, lately, screens, that’s about it. I’m always busy. But it’s cool, it’s nice to chat with people sometimes. I’m too used to being cooped up working all the time.”
--
“Screens?” Matty asked. He glanced her over. She had her ID card. Was she not at the protest? Maybe she didn’t want to be. Or maybe she didn’t know. Or, well, there were a lot of maybes.
“That’s really cool that you work. I tried it. It didn’t really work out,” Matty winced. When he first got to the island he worked for one of those shops in the Marketplace, except he really sucked at it. He didn’t have the attention span. It was worse back then because he was extra fidgety and he was “let go”. He sometimes thought about trying again, especially when Thursday returned to work, but didn’t think he would fare any better this time.
---
Hannah nodded, motioning to her pocket where her phone was. “Yeah, I do IT shit. I wouldn’t say it’s cool but… it’s something to do, I guess. It would be nice to just work for fun instead of having to do it.” She wondered why he couldn’t work but didn’t ask. If she wasn’t forced to do it, Hannah would probably spend her days and nights just making music and partying. Those were the days.
--
“Hey, IT shit sounds cool to me! I’m not amazing with computers at all so people who know how to do magic with them? They are very cool,” Matty said. He supposed he had the time to learn more but why? What would he do with that skill? Being computer savvy didn’t mean anything on this island.
“So having to do it? What do you mean? You aren’t working by choice?” Matty asked, running a hand through his hair. Hmm. He should die it again soon. Maybe blue because it was cold outside.
---
Hannah smiled a bit and shrugged. “Eh, it’s okay I guess. It used to be more fun when I could do some really fun stuff with it. Now it’s just whatever.” She shook her head a little and glanced around. She didn’t mind talking with the guy, but she didn’t want either of them to get in trouble for it. You could never be too sure about these things.
“Um, no, not really It’s kind of part of my sentence or whatever.” Hannah didn’t like talking about work, but her social skills sucked so talking about other topics was always a rough start.
--
“What sort of fun stuff?” Matty asked then paused, “Uh, maybe be nice with your answer? I suspect that a lot of what you are going to say will go right over my head.” He laughed at himself. He wasn’t stupid but if she started talking in lingo, well, he would be completely lost.
“Sentence?” Matty repeated, “Wait. Are you a jail bird too?” He supposed he shouldn’t be happy about finding someone else who was sent here from jail. It wasn’t always a good thing and it wasn’t always a safe thing but it was something to bond about! Common experience! All that goodness!
---
Blinking at him again, Hannah hesitated for a moment before answering. “Um, music mostly. I used to make music.” That seemed like a nice answer, right? She wasn’t sure what he meant by that.
“Too? Um, yeah, sounds like it, I guess. You been here long? I got here around this time last year, but I don’t get out too much.” Hannah looked around again, it seemed like this shouldn’t be a public conversation, but maybe she was just paranoid.
--
Matty lit up. This was better than Christmas. This was better than anything. A musician? Argh, if there was one thing he really missed was his drums. Sure, sometimes he would muck around on whatever he could get but it wasn’t his drums. It wasn’t the same and he couldn’t seem to be able to get drums here.
“You are a musician? What do you play? What sort of music?” He tried not to bounce and look crazy. He may have failed at both parts.
“About three years,” Matty said. He saw her look around. Was she okay? She did say she had to work and she didn’t get out much. That was slightly disconcerting, “You okay?”
---
Hannah laughed a little and nodded, shaking her head at how excited he got. “I was, a DJ. EDM mostly, if you’re into that sort of thing. A lot of people aren’t.” She doubted that he happened to like the same kind of music, or if he did, that he’d ever heard her music before all the shit hit the fan.
“Nice.” At his question, she just nodded a little, but wasn’t very convincing about it.
--
“Oh wow! That’s awesome!” Matty said. Was he into that sort of thing? Eh. He’d listen to it and the bass player in Silver Wolf would drag him out to clubs sometimes. He liked the glow sticks and got distracted by them a lot. He probably wouldn’t know anything she did but still, “So do you still do music?”
She wasn’t very convincing. He might be scaring her away. He knew he was high energy and it only got worse when he got into restless moods like this. He was easily distracted and easily impressed.
“You were working, right? Do you need to get going? Want some company for a few steps?”
---
“Yeah, it was pretty epic while it lasted.” Hannah thought about it for a minute, remembering fondly when things were good. She shook her head in response though, her smile fading. “No, not really allowed to anymore. I guess it doesn’t matter here, doesn’t seem like a big club crowd around here anyway.”
“Um, I wouldn’t mind company, but, probably not a good idea. I wouldn’t want the guards to give you trouble or anything.” Which really sucked, he seemed like a nice guy and Hannah didn’t mind talking to him, even though he was kind of spacey.
--
“Dude! Dude! Dude!” Matty said, practically bouncing, “Yes! We have to do try this! I mean, seriously, there is a severe lack of music around here and maybe if people heard some good music - and I’m sure you are amazing - it would totally bring some life to people! And we need this!” He looked at her with the most dazzling smile he could come up with, “Please? We gotta try!”
The bouncing stopped only because he was confused and he said so, “Why would the guards give me trouble?” This time. He made a face, “Wait. It’s because of the lack of ID card? I’m personally loving the freedom of not having an ID card,” he dropped his voice to an almost conspiratorial whisper, “I almost feel normal.”
---
Woah. Okay, that was way more intense of a reaction than Hannah expected. So much so that she stepped back, eyes widening for a moment. “Holy shit, dude. Calm down. I totally support there being music and stuff around here. But you got the wrong girl. I’d get my ass handed to me, and I think I’ll pass on that.”
She felt a little envious when he said he felt normal and free. It must be nice. “Nah, they don’t care too much about that for now. It’s just… they watch me real close to make sure I’m behaving so… yeah. Not you, it’s me, but I don’t want you to get shit by association or anything, you know?”
--
Matty stopped bouncing. He was doing that thing where he got much too excited. Though he didn’t understand. Why did they care so much about her? Like, they were all prisoners here, no? So if she had some fun? Who cared?
He smiled at her and held up his hands, “Sorry. I will dial back extra bouncy me to a moderate slightly bouncy me. But why would you get your ass handed to you? It’s just music and I’m pretty sure they haven’t told us no music yet. Unless I missed something. It’s entirely possible.” That was true. He did miss announcements sometimes.
“Can I ask what did you do?” Matty said, “‘Cause my roommate was in prison too and they don’t seem to keep that close of an eye on him. And as long as I keep to the ground, the guards don’t usually care what I’m up to.”
--- Hannah sighed, glad that he calmed down some. “I work for them. They make me. So, I have to do what they say, and not mess around with other stuff. I don’t want to get sent back to that place, or prison, or worse.”
Raking her fingers back through her hair, Hannah glanced around again before looking back to the guy. “I hacked into some radio stations, and satellites and… like… the internet?” It sounded a lot worse when she said it outside. “Apparently the government really doesn’t like that. FCC violations and threats to Homeland Security or some shit like that.”
--
“Can they?” Matty asked. He was pretty sure once they were here, they were here. Yes, it was an ongoing worry for him and Thursday that they would go back to the experiment but he was trying to convince himself many times that they couldn’t, “I mean, this is our prison now, isn’t it? A nice one but still a prison.” He wrapped his arms around himself. He didn’t want to go back. He wouldn’t go back.
“Shit,” Matty said, “That’s pretty hardcore. But… what happens if you step out of line?” Matty may be pushing too hard and he realised that. He smiled softly and shook his head, “You don’t need to answer that. I think I just assume this is the end of the line for a lot of us.”
---
Hannah just shrugged. “I don’t know, I wouldn’t put anything past them. And I don’t want to find out for sure.” Shifting uncomfortably, Hannah looked around again. “I don’t know what they’d do with you or somebody else, but I know what they’d do to me and… no thanks. I’m not willing to risk that for a night of music, as much as I love it.”
She wouldn’t go into any more detail than that, it was just too scary to even think about let alone say out loud. “Yeah, one way or another.”
--
Matty went silent for a moment, looking down. He would do anything to protect Thursday from going back there. He would fight like hell before going back. He looked up at Hannah, his smile a little sad now.
“Do you hug? I feel like this is a hugging moment. I feel like we need to hug because sometimes things are unfair,” Matty said.
---
Hannah was really surprised by the offer. She couldn’t remember the last time she was hugged, or hugged someone back. She wasn’t huge on hugging, but now since it had been so long, she suddenly realized how much she could use one. “Um… yeah? I guess? It’s not weird to hug a stranger? You don’t even know my name.”
--
“It’s totally not weird to hug a stranger,” Matty said, then paused, “as long as both parties are cool with it,” he paused again, “I’m Matthew if that makes things better. Most people call me Matty.” He opened his arms. He was in hug position and he liked to think he gave some pretty good hugs.
---
Hannah hesitated before nodding a little and going in for a stiff, awkward little hug. “I’m Hannah. Good to meet you, Matty.”
--
Matty put his arms around her, snuggling her close to him. He felt that she was a little stiff and, yeah, stranger-danger will do that to a person but he ignored it. Hugs were the first step to friendship!
“Nice to meet you, Hannah,” Matty said, stepping back, “So. If I can be so nosy, what do you do outside of work?”
---
The hug was nice, even though Hannah wasn’t at the stage of hugging back just yet. Stepping back, she smiled and nodded. It actually was really nice to meet Matty. He was a good guy, even if he seemed to be kind of all over the place. Nothing wrong with that.
“Um, nothing? I don’t get a whole lot of down time. 16 hour days, and then with the curfew and all… not a whole lot of time for anything else.” Which technically meant she should be working right now. Which…. She kind of was, without showing it, obviously.
--
Matty blinked. 16 hours days had to be illegal. He thought for a moment then smiled, rather proud at himself, “Do you get to go on these walk abouts often? Maybe the next time you do, you should text me. We can hang out. Then you don’t have to be all work and no play, Hannah. Everyone deserves some play.” He wondered if he was being too forward. Maybe Hannah didn’t want any play. Didn’t she say she was worried about him getting in trouble? Whatever. He didn’t care. Everyone deserved play, after all.
---
Hannah hesitated before nodding. “I… guess I could do that. I mean, I don’t get to go out all the time, but I could try to get out more, see how it goes. It would be nice to get to hang out with someone without a hassle. But… I don’t know, I don’t want you to catch any heat about it. I mean, a lot of people around here don’t trust me because of my job. Which… sucks, a lot, but I get it. Sort of.”
--
“You mean the job that you don’t seem to really want and are being forced to do?” Matty asked, raising an eyebrow at her. He shrugged, “Hey. I’m not going to judge you on the job you do. Especially when you said it was a part of your sentence. I mean, you could totally judge me for having a criminal record and you haven’t yet. That I can tell. And heat? I’ve get enough of that when I’m in the air. You may keep me grounded. They may actually thank you. They may give you a break.” He wondered if he should ask exactly what her job was but he didn’t want to. It didn’t matter. She seemed cool and, hey, maybe he could work on that music night idea on her. Then how cool would that be? When he got home, he may need to crank up the music and declare it a dance party night.
---
Hannah just smirked as Matty talked. He was definitely not like anyone she had met before, and he had a totally different perspective on things than most people around here seemed to have. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, at best, they might tolerate me getting out a little and talking to people. More than that, never going to happen.”
---
“Baby steps then,” Matty said. He was nothing if not positive. Besides, he really didn’t want to believe that the government would stop her from having friends or a social life. The government were a bunch of dicks but being social was a necessity, like food or sleep.
“So where were we heading to next? Or just aimless island wondering staring at screens?”
---
It didn’t seem like Matty was taking her seriously, so she hesitantly just shrugged. If he got into trouble because of her, she would feel bad, but she had warned him. “Um, I need to go check some equipment in the Marketplace. So, sort of staring at screens and then staring at cameras. It’s kind of boring.”
---
“Lots of staring, gotcha,” Matty said, He hopped a little then said, “How about I walk you to the Marketplace and then you can do the boring work stuff?” He might go shopping or something, even though he was running low on cash. Or maybe he could find something to do and let her work. Or something. Fun things.
---
Hannah thought about it for a minute and then shrugged. “Yeah, okay, that sounds cool.” She started walking in that direction, at a slower pace than she would have if she was walking alone. “So, um, what did you do before here? Like… before jail stuff?”
--
Matty smiled that she called it jail stuff. He also smiled at the thought of playing drums, “I was a college student but during the summer and stuff, my friends and I were in a band. We did touring and stuff, which is how I got in the States.” Or rather how he got stuck in the States. He wasn’t going to clarify that. Or maybe he should. Either way? Don’t commit crimes in other countries.
---
“Oh yeah? That’s cool. The touring stuff, I mean. What was the name of your band, maybe I heard of you? Where are you originally from?” She was pretty sure he didn’t say, she was usually pretty good at catching things like that.
--
“Silver Wolf,” Matty said, “We came out of Victoria, B.C.,” he flashed her a grin, “We had a bit of a following our second summer, which was so awesome.” He heard the band broke up after he was arrested and the last time he heard from anyone, the lead singer was trying to get a band back together but couldn’t get anyone. Matty felt bad that he was the reason Silver Wolf fell apart but he carried a lot more guilt about his arrest then ending Silver Wolf. Bad life decisions and these were ones he couldn’t fix.
---
Hannah nodded a little. She didn’t think the name of the band was familiar, but that didn’t mean she hadn’t heard them. She listened to a lot of different music, when she’d had the chance. “That does sound awesome, where’d you guys tour?”
--
“Mostly the western coast,” Matty said, “Of the US, I mean. The leader singer? He thought we should try to make it in the States because then the record labels would pay attention to us. Sure, there are a lot of Canadian bands with labels, but I bet if I listed a bunch, you wouldn’t know half of them. So we pretended to be Americans and a lot of bars didn’t care. We put on a good show and brought people in.” Kind of thought we’d make it one day, Matty thought but pushed it aside. It wasn’t in his cards. He grinned, “I loved being on the road. Sharing a van with the guys? Not always but it was an adventure. Somewhere new, something new all the time.”
---
Hannah smiled a little, looking ahead as they walked. “Yeah, I know what you mean, I was touring for a while too before shit went down. It was great, while it lasted.” But she refused to let herself think about that more than necessary.
--
“Where did you tour?” Matty asked, “I would love to hear anything you did, if you have access to anything?” He may not have heard her before but he would love to hear her now. He glanced to her, wishing for a moment they both could have the opportunity to play music again. Or something of the sort.
---
“Up and down the West Coast, mostly northern Cali and Washington, some things in Oregon randomly, or further south if the gig was right. I’m not sure if any of my stuff is still around, I basically can’t be trusted to play anymore, so I haven’t done anything new in years. I got some pretty good radio play for a minute there, though.” That had been nice, really nice.
--
“Can’t be trusted to play?” Matty repeated, “So what happens when you play? Does your ability have to do with your music?” That would be cool to have a musical ability. His were decidedly not musical, which he was cool with. He loved his wings and wouldn’t change them for anything.
“Wouldn’t it be funny if we played near each other?” Matty paused, “Uh, though that was like… a long time ago so I don’t know when you were going around. And our crowds didn’t run the same, but still! It would be cool.”
---
Hannah sighing, shoving her hands down into her pockets, playing with her phone in the process. “Yeah, kind of, one of them anyway. I can like change sounds and things. I mostly just made music out of non-musical sounding things. But I figured out ways to use it for other things, that weren’t quite as… innocent, so yeah, no more of that.”
Glancing to Matty, Hannah offered a little smile. “That would have been cool, but I don’t think the time lines up though.”
--
“Make music out of non-musical sounds?” Matty repeated, “Okay, I can’t really figure out how to use something like that for not innocent things but that sounds amazing. Like making that annoying dial up sound into something beautiful. Hey, have you ever seen that video on Youtube where the guy takes old floppy disk drives and times it out to play Tainted Love? That’s awesome!” Oops, he totally jumped tracks there, didn’t he? He was bad at that.
Matty shrugged. That would have been cool but whatever. It was a shame she didn’t play now. It was a shame he didn’t play now. Just having something like that back? Would be awesome.
---
Hannah shrugged. “I can hurt people with sounds, if I had to. Like, high pitched sounds, pierce eardrums, shatter glass that someone is nearby, things like that.” She wasn’t exactly proud of that, but once it was out there she couldn’t exactly pretend it wasn’t a thing. “No, I haven’t seen that but it sounds pretty cool.”
--
Matty studied for a moment as they walked and said, “Hurting people? Not so cool but the ability is neat. Though I’m going to pretend you are just going to make wonderful music and other sounds.” Matty was nothing if not optimistic about things. It helped him keep going.
Matty lit up and said, “You should give me your email address or something and I’ll find it and send it to you. It’s so cool. I love watching it. Plus the person who did it did a bunch of other songs. It’s just epic to watch.”
---
“It’s not something I did for fun or anything. First time was self-defense, after that it was all that experimental shit.” She just shrugged it off, not wanting to think or talk about that at all.
Hannah looked to him for a moment end then nodded. “Yeah, that would be cool.” She didn’t bother taking out her phone, but still played with it in her pocket. “You’ve got a text with my info.”
--
Matty held up his hands and said, “I’m not judging.” Maybe if she did it on purpose and enjoyed it but she didn’t seem the type. Some judging but the good kind of judging here where he saw her in the best possible light. Besides, they all had their stories, right?
Matty felt his phone buzz and it took a moment to locate his phone in his coat and he grinned, “Win. Totally going to send it to you,” he paused, “And totally not asking how you sent it without knowing my details because you know IT. IT magic, right?”
---
Hannah frowned a little, knowing that he didn’t seem to be judging her didn’t make her feel much better about it. She wasn’t a violent person, her history was proof of that. But apparently she could be, when forced, and that caused her a lot of conflict.
She just smirked as he looked to his phone and nodded. “Yeah, something like that.”
--
Matty would have understood that. He had beaten someone. He wasn’t a really violent person. He was more of a run and hide sort of guy but something that night… it was a bad mistake. It was a bad decision and it made him wonder if he was a bad person inside, where it mattered.
He saw the frown and he nudged her gently. He didn’t want frowny face. He nudged her again and said, “I will warn you: I have no magic. Well, a little magic but I’m not overly skilled in things that make people say I have magic. I just have me. That’s something right?” Oh, rambly, right there.
---
Hannah smiled a little after the nudge and nodded. “Yeah, that’s definitely something, no doubt.” She offered Matty another little smile after a pause. She really wasn’t very good at this socializing thing, but she knew enough to not make someone feel bad. And that wasn’t her intent anyway.
--
Matty laughed. At least he got her to smile because he was pretty sure neither of them knew what he was talking about when he rambled there. That was fine. As long as she didn’t seem so sad.
“I should probably warn you, you may get other funny videos or whatever from me,” Matty said, “I might spend too much time online but there isn’t a lot else going on so why not, right?”
---
Hannah smirked and looked to him with a shake of her head. “There’s plenty to do without being online. Like you said before, looking up at the sky. Walking around, getting air, talking to people, making friends. Little things.” Hannah figured if she had that kind of freedom she might take it for granted too, though, so she didn’t judge.
--
“And I do all those things,” Matty said, “and then I get bored and spend all the time online. I should probably get a job or something,” he tilted his head, “Do you need an assistant? I’m easy on the eyes and you already know I’m easy to get along with.” He flashed her a grin, “So you want to hire me?”
---
Laughing, Hannah arched a brow. “If it were up to me, I’d hire you. That was one hell of a sell. But I am sure you can find a way better job around here somewhere, with less stress and annoyance. I don’t know, maybe the coffee shop, or that diner place, or you could open a store or something of your own maybe?”
--
“Coffee shop is hiring. They want a morning manager, which is awesome, but I don’t want to get up at the butt crack of dawn to work,” Matty said, “And the diner place? I’m 99% I would just sit there and eat all day. My roomie? He works and I really should too but yeah, I’ve been failing at that. So really, you just need to hire me of your own accord. I mean, how can anyone say no to you?” He smiled at her. He could keep talking himself up.
---
Hannah smirked and shook her head. “I really doubt you want to work for the government. So, probably working elsewhere on the island is a better choice. Where does your roommate work? Maybe he could get you a job where ever he is at?”
--
“Thursday works at the Facility,” Matty said and shrugged, “Probably could but that doesn’t seem as fun as being your assistant,” he paused, “What if I dyed my hair pink and chewed bubble gum? I could look like a really interesting secretary.” He knew he wasn’t going to get a job with Hannah or anything but he could keep teasing. Besides she was smirking, which meant she found him funny, right?
---
Arching a brow, she looked him over carefully before shaking her head no. “I don’t know if pink is your color, it could wash you out, depending on the shade. Blue might work better. Or like metallicy silver, that would be epic.” Hannah smirked at herself this time, she used to be very into this sort of thing, figuring out new looks. But that was forever ago and just felt silly now. She missed being silly and playful, everything was so blah and serious these days.
--
“I’ve done blue before,” Matty said, “I liked it. Silver sounds fun.” Matty said. He tugged on his hair. It was time for a change. He glanced to her, “Want to come over while I do it? If you can? We can dye your hair too, if you want. I like your hair. You don’t need to.” Yup, he was trying to get her from working again. He was sure she was going to say no but he wasn’t one to give up.
---
Hannah played with a piece of her own hair with a shrug. “I’ve been bored with it lately, but it’s not like I have any reason to change it, I don’t go anywhere. I had dreads a while ago, maybe that again. A little easier to take care of and something different.” She couldn’t commit to coming over to his place to do it, but it was a nice idea so she didn’t say no outright.
--
“Dreads are awesome! I can totally picture you with dreads,” Matty said, lighting up, “You totally have a reason to change it up! For you! And now all the times we are going to hang out with.” He grinned. Okay, so maybe not so much the latter if she couldn’t come join but he could pretend, right?
--- Hannah shrugged but couldn’t help but smile some. Maybe it would be nice to do something for herself, even if it was just little like changing her hair. “Maybe. We’ll see. I’ll let you know.” She figured no one else would care much if she changed her hair, but it would be cool to have someone to share it with.
--
“You totally should. If you do it, I’ll dye my hair silver. We’ll be all cool and looking like we are a part of the future,” Matty said with a bounce. Or something. Maybe not the future because he didn’t like the idea of a future still being on the island but whatever. Not the point of his thought there.
---
“Maybe,” Hannah repeated with a smile. She could tell that Matty wasn’t one to take no for an answer, and while it was endearing, she was still cautious. Checking her watch, she frowned. “Look, this was cool, but I really gotta get going. I have a lot of shit to do and I’d rather just get it over with so I’m not stuck working all night, you know? But maybe I can catch up with you again sometime. And, you’ve got my info, so yeah.”

Matty didn’t take no for an answer when it was something he wanted. He bounced slightly when she said maybe and nodded when she talked of work. Boring work but he did have her information and he wasn’t going to forget about her. He nodded again and said quickly, “Yup. Go work. Do your IT magic. I’ll catch you around and let me know what you think of that video! I need to know if you love it because you will absolutely love it.” He threw his arms up, “Talk to you later hug?”
---
Hannah laughed a little and nodded. “Sure, okay.” She gave Matty another quick hug and then hurried off with a wave. It had actually been really nice to talk with him a bit, and focus on things other than work and the island and crapastical things. She would definitely try to contact him again. “See you around.”
