He didn’t know what time it was when he woke up that morning but it was still dark outside and Fitz was asleep beside him, some time during the night they had separated from their embrace and in a way Ben was thankful for this, it made it easier to slide out of bed without waking up the other man. Collecting some clothes from the floor he silently padded out of the room to get dressed, he needed to get out of this apartment for a bit, a walk in the early hours of the morning might not be the best idea but he knew that any danger wouldn’t come from the animals on the island, it was the humans he had to be careful of.
A quick note was scribbled and left on the kitchen bench - Gone for a walk. Back soon. xx B before he put on his shoes, grabbed the front door key and left as silent as he could. The street lights were on as he walked down the street, cutting across an area before he started on the familiar path into the forest that lead towards the clearing that had become a common escape for both Fitz and himself.
There was the usual chatter of the animals in the trees and undergrowth around him, most of them seemed to relax when they realized who it was walking through, they knew the man who could talk to them meant no harm. Ben’s mind wandered, the chattering becoming a welcome white noise as he moved through the trees, he thought of his life before and his life now. Just a year ago he was in Hawaii, enjoying the sun and surf while inspecting the damage caused by the prolonged Kilauea eruptions. It was all so beautiful that he didn’t think that life could get any better, this was what he had studied so long for, to be able to do this kind of research… but just weeks later his life was to make the biggest turn that he never expected. A turn that put him on this island with no signs of ever getting off.
Tomorrow was his birthday, he’d be 36 and for the first time in his memory there would not be a phone or video call from his parents or his sister wishing him such, no card coming in the mail or an email sharing a funny picture from his childhood. It all made him miss his family that much more, wishing they were all off the island, that he could take Fitz back east to meet them - the only good thing that had happened in the last year. When he got to the clearing he got the blanket out from the hidden bag and sat down on it, his shoes coming off before his feet were folded onto his legs in Lotus and the backs of his forearms resting on knees. Deep breaths helped him settle into a meditative state, needing to quiet down those thoughts in his mind, he knew that the creatures around him would alert him to any intruders so he didn’t feel nervous about letting himself relax out here.
It took awhile for his mind to clear, his whole body to relax and to feel better in himself, by this time the sky had started to color, the sun would be up soon and the island would be coming to life. Tucking the blanket back into the hiding spot he walked along the track and then the street back to his apartment.
