Behind the podium stood Mayor Monday. Sweat creased his brow from the heat of the day, the suit he wore was sticking to his arms, torso, legs. Glasses threatened to descend the bridge of his nose and plummet to the ground. And yet he stood strong and confident regardless. Face was stoic, stern, as he addressed the gathering crowd of citizens.
“An attack has taken place recently, one of our own employees and cherished members of the Government team. You may know her as Hannah Ryers,” Monday began, voice never wavering even as he wove the story together to spin it the way he wanted it.
“Miss Ryers was seeking treatment for a sudden illness, and she became an unnecessary victim to a small group of individuals who will stop at nothing to undermine the Government.”
Glancing up from his paper he looked out at the crowd. “A resident is responsible for this atrocious crime. The same individual responsible for harming our guards. The Faction is responsible.”
Residents in the crowd turned to look at each other, murmuring for a moment.
“If you all don’t know the Faction, let me educate you. They’re a rogue group of residents who gather with the intent to overthrow the Government which protects and cares for you. But unlike you all, they resort to violence and games. Anyone with information on any members of the Faction will be rewarded if it ends with apprehension of those in the group. Until we catch the members of this organization our streets will not be safe. Dear Hannah was just like you all, kind and generous, using her gifts to help your security. Now she’s gone.”
Monday looked upset visibly by those last words. “Help us find who did this to her so we all can rest easier.”
And then he descended from the podium to head back into the building. There was work to do.
