Lyon shook his head. Even though Riff seemed intelligent enough, it did appear like he didn't quite understand how Lyon did things just yet. Open threats and obstacles were of no concern to Lyon. If they were, he would've taken his list of names and kicked each and every ass on it in an appropriate way so as to tell all of them to back off. But he didn't. Lyon could deal with threats... and he could deal with obstacles. What he couldn't deal with was...
"Threats are of no consequence to me. None of the people I've been cutting down have been threats." He paused and looked into the sky once more as he'd done so many times this evening, "...I just can't get caught."
Moreover, what Lyon wanted to say was that he couldn't go to jail. But it seemed a little odd for a contractor to be worried about such a human issue. Despite that peculiar fact, it was always first and foremost in Lyon's mind. If he was caught and dragged off to prison, he'd lose Rene. If he fought back and killed every guard who threatened to take him away, Rene would think him a monster.
It was a sticky predicament... and one of the few things Lyon had left to remind him that beneath his contractor's exterior, he was still human.
"Understood. And let me make this clear, I don't trust anyone. Abandon any and all hopes of us one day coming to understand and trust one another immediately."
