"So, I've been having dizzy spells and headaches for a while now. And for the last few days or so, I've been throwing up everything." Carys rubbed her stomach as she spoke, trying to quell the constant turning. The smell in the healers office definitely was not helping.
"Okay," the healer noted that down. "Are you sexually active?"
"Sort of." They'd only had sex twice.
"Intercourse?"
Turning a little red, Carys nodded. "Yes."
"When was your last menstrual period?"
"Um, last month sometime?"
"You don't know?" the healer asked looking up at her.
"Not really, no I mean, it just happens and then I deal with it. I've never needed to keep track, or at least I never saw the need to," Carys replied.
"Was the intercourse unprotected?" The healer asked.
"I don't know, it might have been--oh fuck, I am pregnant, aren't I?" Carys stared at the man.
"Certainly sounds that way," he nodded. "We can do a preliminary exam right now to see if you are and if you are, we can figure out how far along and things. I can refer you to an obstetrician or a midwife if you'd rather afterwards."
Carys sighed. "Alright, sure." On some level she knew this was coming. It made sense. And George had brought it up and the more she thought of it, the more she tried to deny it. But she couldn't, not sitting here with a medical professional.
"Good then, since you're in a dress, you can just slip off your underwear and we'll get started," the Healer said as he went to wash his hands.
Carys' face got a little red at the prospect. So far George was the only one who'd been down there. She told herself to suck it up anyway, it wasn't like she was getting with Healer Bradley. Still hesitant, she took them off and got up on the exam table. He helped her get arranged in the stirrups and then pulled on a pair of gloves.
This didn't seem like an expected or wanted pregnancy so Healer Bradley didn't want to start talking about what a wonderful and exciting thing pregnancy and babies were. "It's nice to see the sun finally out," he commented instead.
"Mm," Carys nodded. Please just get it over with. Since she didn't respond enthusiastically, he figured he'd best just hurry up and get the exam finished.
"Alright, you're pregnant. I can take a look and tell you how far along and I can tell you what the sex is too, if you'd like to know," Healer Bradley said with a smile as he removed his gloves and washed his hands again.
"Yes please, to both," Carys wanted to know. She had no idea what she was going to do about it. She was still in shock that it was actually true.
Healer Bradley helped her out of the stirrups and waved his wand over her stomach a few times. A screen floated just above it and he nodded along. "Looks like you concieved around the 3rd, I'd say. You're nearly six weeks, looks to be."
"Six weeks?"
"Measured from what I will assume was your last period," he smiled. "You wanted to know the sex?"
"Yes please," she nodded. Why the hell not? Maybe it'd make it seem more real.
Another spell and Healer Bradley studied the odd looking puff of smoke. "Do twins run in your family?"
"My husband and I both have twins," Carys nodded. "Oh, fuck."
"The obstetrician will be able to confirm this once you're further along but it looks like twin girls, there's two seperate magical signatures and they hold feminine characteristics. At this point. There's a few things that could happen, one of the twins could get re-absorbed, it's called Vanishing Twin Syndrome," Healer Bradley said as he sat down at the small desk in the office. "Not something to worry about, in your case, I think, seeing as twins are common on both sides." He wrote down the name of an obstetrician and some midwives. "Make an appointment to see the doctor and a midwife if you'd like to go that route. I'm going to stress that you see the obstetrician soon, because multiple births can have complications. It'd be easier to catch things early if you start having regular appointments."
He brought the card over to her. "Thanks," she said softly as she took the card.
"Do you have any questions?" He asked with a sympathetic smile.
Yeah, how does this happen? What do I do now? "No, not at this point," Carys shook her head as she pulled her underwear back on.
"Alright, well, have a good day then, Mrs. Weasley," he smiled.
"You too, Healer Bradley," she said as she picked up her purse and rearranged her dress. He left the room before her and she just stood there a moment, completely dumbfounded.
"He's never getting laid again," she muttered, pushing her hair out of her face as she left the office and stepped out onto Diagon Alley. She didn't want to stay in this place.
Quickly, she crossed over into muggle London and looked around. A bookstore would be a good place to start she figured. This was all so surreal. There was a baby--no, two babies inside of her. Life was growing inside of her. And it was--she felt numb. How could she be happy about this? After all of the emotional upheaval of the last few months, babies were the last thing she needed.
Carys opened the door of Treadwell's and looked around for the pregnancy and parenting section. This is too soon. Her and George's relationship was still very up in the air in her opinion, yes they'd said they'd try it but now--this was going to mess everything up. How was she going to tell him?
She stood there, staring at the books. Shiny covers, with delighted mothers. That's not me.
A clerk popped by when Carys hadn't moved for ten minutes. "Is there anything I can help you with?"
"I'm pregnant," Carys said softly. "Just found out today."
"Oh, congratulations!" The woman next to her said brightly.
"Thank you," Carys smiled politely. "I need a book."
"Okay, anything you had in mind? There's the classic What to Expect When You're Expecting. It's a good place to start. Maybe once you know it's a boy or girl, what kind needs you and your baby has specifically you could come back and get another?" She said brightly, adjusting her black plastic frame glasses.
"Alright, I'll get that," Carys nodded. The clerk pulled it off the shelf. "Was there anything else you needed? We just put some tea on if you'd like a cup."
"Oh, no, thank you, I have to get back. This is it for me," she said, holding the book up briefly.
"If you're sure," the clerk was a sensitive type and could tell the woman wasn't so happy about her pregnancy. She thought a cup of tea would cheer her up but if she didn't want it, she wasn't going to push. "I'll ring that up for you."
Carys emerged from the bookstore and looked up the street, first left, then right. No where to go. She decided to take a left. She'd slipped the book into her bag, unable to look at it quite yet. Her wandering took her to a park that wasn't so busy. The grass was inviting so she slipped off her flats and stepped onto the green warmth. She closed her eyes and let the heat radiate up her feet. It would be so nice to nap here.
She walked a little ways before laying her sweater out on the ground. She sat down first, but then just decided to go for it and lay down. She laid on her stomach, cheek to the ground. It was beautiful here. The sunlight heated her back, felt like a warm, comforting hand after a hard day's work. And it still only morning.
Her stomach gave a rumble and she closed her eyes. She was hungry, but she didn't want to eat lest she get sick again. The frustration of it was enough to make her cry. They need food. They. There were twins inside of her and she felt so alone with this information.
We moved too fast but I had no sign.
