WHO Evan Rosier and Hestia Rosier Hestia liked to dress up for Christmas and usually chose her outfit days ahead, if not weeks. This year she was wearing a long sleeve, red woollen dress that had a v-neck to display her assets. She was drinking hot chocolate and was sitting by the heater. "You're welcome to come, you know," she said again, looking up at Evan who sometimes reminded her of a caged animal. "My family are very friendly..." Her voice faded a bit, and she added, "but I know that it's probably too soon yet. We both have to get used to each other before we think about meeting each other's families. Are you going to your mum's tonight?" Don't get Evan wrong, he very much liked getting dressed up for Christmas and go the galas that were held at all the pureblood estates. Ever since the downfall, he didn't care for holiday parties anymore -- especially mudblood ones. "You're right," he mocked. "It's too soon yet," he echoed and took another sip of his scotch. He wandered over to the tree, knelt down and picked up a thing rectangular box. "I got you something..." He trailed off as he stood back up again. Hestia's eyebrows rose in surprise and she smiled, pleased that he had thought of her. She really hadn't expected anything from him. "Thanks, that's really sweet of you," she said, moving closer to the tree. "I got you something too." Leaning down, she picked up a squashy looking package wrapped in bright Muggle paper. "I hope you like it. It's nothing special. I figure next year will be better because we'll know each other a lot better then." Ever the optimist. "Don't say that," Evan said instinctively at Hestia's comment about his actions being sweet. When she leaned down to pick up his gift, Evan's eyes immediately peered downward to get a clear view down the v-neck of her dress to see her breasts. Thank you, he thought to himself and took another swig of his drink. At the mention of getting something better next year, Evan chugged the rest of the scotch then glanced at the empty glass. "I need a refill..." Hestia blinked as Evan refilled his glass. She wondered if he was an alcoholic, though really, she couldn't blame him if he was. After all he'd been through... "Well, anyway, here," she said, putting the gift down near Evan. "Oh and when is your birthday? I'd hate to miss it. Mine is the 31st of May." Evan knew he'd need a reminder of her birthday because there was no way he would remember. "October 30th," he answered simply and set his glass down to take his gift. He held out Hestia's gift to her and shrugged slightly. "It's not much," he admitted. "October 30th," Hestia repeated, smiling at him. She took the gift from him with a shy smile and went to sit down on the couch to open it. She opened it carefully, so as not to rip the paper, and pulled out the box Lifting the lid, she gasped when she saw the beautiful cashmere scarf. "Oh Evan," she breathed, pulling the white fabric out of the box. "It's beautiful. Thank you so much." Evan watched Hestia open her gift and half smiled when she commented on it. "Yeah, I thought you'd might like it... Since it's, y'know, cold out..." He asked the woman in the boutique and that was the first thing she suggested. "Glad you like it," he added as he sat down on the couch with his gift on his lap. Not being so orderly, he ripped open the nice wrapping and pulled off the lid to the box. "It's nice," he said as he pulled the blue jumper from the box. "I actually needed a new one." "Oh good," Hestia said, pleased that he liked it. She knew it was a boring present, but as she had told him, she expected to be able to get him something really good next year. "Oh, and I got this for your mum," she said, getting up from the couch to dig beneath the tree to find the flat book-like package she had wrapped for her new mother-in-law. A book was boring too, but what else did she get for a woman she had never met and was afraid she hated Hestia? Evan nearly choked on his drink and coughed as he immediately put it back down on the coffee table. "You did?" He asked in a bewildered tone and looking rather surprised. "There was no need..." He began as he took the package from Hestia's hands. There was no way his mother would accept it and he couldn't blame the woman. "I didn't get anything for your parents," he admitted with a slight shrug of his shoulders. Hestia bit her lip as she gazed over at him, sitting on the couch beside Evan again. "That's okay," she said with a smile that she didn't truly feel. "I know this is hard for you. I just thought..." she said, gesturing to the present in Evan's hands. "Maybe she might realise that I'm not so bad..." And might want to meet me, she thought, but didn't hold out much hope, which made her sad. Sometimes Evan could be so nice and funny and she really thought they could have a connection, but then suddenly he'd turn cold and throw his Death Eater-ness in her face. It hurt and bewildered her when she was trying so hard. It didn't take much for Evan not to laugh at Hestia's comment about his mother, but he still had to hold himself back from doing so. His mother will never accept this woman as her daughter-in-law. "Sure..." he replied simply, having no other words for Hestia and her thoughtful gesture. "What's inside anyway?" He asked curiously, wondering what his wife got for his mother. He shook the package gently trying to figure it out himself. "It's a book," Hestia replied, smiling at Evan. She wondered if he was pleased that she had thought of his family. It kind of seemed like it but she was never too sure with Evan. "I got it at Flourish and Blott's. It's fiction and it's about a family that has a strong magical history and it's about their lives and their families. It got really good reviews in the Daily Prophet." Evan wondered if she chose the book to mock him -- a family that has a strong magical history. Hestia did not seem like that sort of person however, but as Evan learned from being a Death Eater, you could never be too sure of others. "I'm sure she'll appreciate it," he finally said after setting the package down on the coffee table next to his glass of scotch. "I'll bring it with me when I visit her this evening," he added as he glanced at his watch. "I hope so," Hestia replied, beginning to relax a bit now. "I spent quite a bit of time picking it out." She had thought that she might like the focus on a pureblood family, even though Hestia was loathe to encourage that sort of thinking. Still, she had to connect with Evan's mother somehow. "About what time do you tihnk that you'll be back? I'll probably be home around ten or eleven." "My mother's having a small party and sometimes these things can go on through the night," Evan said matter-of-factly, never flinching in his lie. "I think I might just stay the night rather than come back in so late," he added as though he were doing Hestia a favor. Half of what he said wasn't a lie. Yes, he was going to his mother's for a bit, but she wasn't have any sort of get together and Evan had no intentions of sleeping in his old bedroom. His plans were to sleep in Arianwen's bed. Nex to Arianwen. "I'll be back in the morning." Hestia smiled and nodded. "Okay. Good idea. It would be nice for your mother to have some company." See! She thought, feeling a bit more confident now. He could be thoughtful and he obviously cared about his mother. That was a very nice trait and one she would have wanted in a husband. It made her hope that one day he might be able to care about her too. "Well, I suppose I should head over to Mam and Tad's. Everyone should be arriving about now." She stood up and smoothed her dress down. "I guess I'll see you tomorrow then." Evan leaned back into the corner of the couch and rested one arm on the armrest and the other on the back of it. "Right... Tomorrow then," he said with a half smile. "Don't drink too much," he joked. This pretending shit was beginning to take a toll on him. It was just bloody annoying that he had to do this day in and day out -- being civil -- when all he really wanted to do was get rid of Hestia. Hestia smiled, feeling a burst of happiness that he felt comfortable enough to joke with her. "Don't worry, I won't," she said lightly as she made her way over to the door where she had her purse and several carrier bags filled with presents for her family. "Merry Christmas, Evan. Have a good night," she said as she pulled the door open. "Bye." And with that, she left the flat and seeing no one about, she apparated to a secluded spot in her parent's garden. Evan waited a few minutes to make sure Hestia had truly gone. He quickly downed the rest of his second glass of scotch and made his way into his room. He changed into some finer clothes -- a pair of black dress slacks, a lovely white button up shirt and a tie that he neatly tied himself. Finally, he put on a pair of well polished dress shoes and a dress jacket to match the slacks. Evan could clean up nicely when he tried and right now he looked quite debonair. He was sure Arianwen would much appreciate his appearance.

Evan had poured himself a glass of scotch and was sipping it slowly as he stood in the living room, looking at the tree. He wasn't dressed for any occasion -- just a quiet night at home with his usual trousers, a button up shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows and his boots.
