Ya' know, I just wrote that comment to you (sorry - I'm a spamster today), but I totally ignored Cain's name. I meant to bring that up in the character discussion. Why is Wyatt named Cain? Simply to confuse us? Because the only Cain I know is not his brother's keeper and all that.
Anyway, about the Longcoats - It is possible they didn't know who they captured, only that they were resistance to the new government, and yes, most people don't care. But how would they learn otherwise?
It seems most news traveled word-of-mouth. There wasn't any newspaper, or internet, or even a telephone system, so they could only learn what their superiors told them. How would they know the man they hunted was a tin man? Like you said, he wanted a steady paycheck.
