While he hadn't been stalking Cassi, he'd been keeping tabs on where she was. While she was at the school, and once she left, someone had said where she'd taken off to. He was content to let her be, because he got it. While she'd never exactly been flip about her ability, he didn't think she'd ever really realized how bad it could get if it slipped her control. He suspected she knew that, now, and knowing her, she was probably taking her time processing it. He'd give it a couple more days before he really started to worry. He also figured at some point he might touch base with her roommate, but again ... he wasn't in a hurry to get in the middle of them. With Alice's house done and passed off to its new owner, Jake was ready to commit fully to what else needed to be done around town. So he'd touched base with security, was given a list of empty apartments, and told to go see if anything in them needed fixing. Since "fixing" had been left vague, Jake figured he'd do cosmetic repairs too. Not everyone kept up their apartments and if someone had been living in one for a while and no one had checked in ... well, it could get bad. Armed with a toolbox, a tool belt, and a gun tucked into his waistband, Jake consulted the list of empty units, figuring he'd start at the low and work through to the high. Rapping on the door to unit #4, he waited. Knocked again. Waited. When the doorknob didn't give, he figured the vanished occupants had been out ... but security had thought to arm him with a master key. Clever them. Opening the door, he stepped into the dim apartment. It must've been cleaned at some point, he thought; there was no tell-tale smell of rotting anything. No signs of a pet. Suited him. Hauling a heavily potted plant to the door, he used that as a doorstop before he flipped on the lights and moved to open the curtains. He looked around and considered who'd lived here before ... then decided that wasn't the best of ideas. Shaking his head, he found an actual radio and turned that on; he may as well have some tunes while he worked. That done, he started to prowl the apartment, searching out things that needed some fixing before he'd move on to the next one. |
