"I'm not going to wear a dress again, my dear. Once, but not twice. I don't have the legs for it." But Rex's eyes were twinkling with mirth as he leaned back in his chair and before too long he joined in with the laughter. This was a good night, with the right beer and wine and the right company. The lives of a demon might drag on for hundreds of years but if you spent it all hiding who you truly were, it could seem twice that length. His friends with him right now, didn't have that problem. Anatomically, men but their souls oh, that was all woman. Pure, pure woman. A few of his co-workers might have lifted their brows upon seeing the circles Rex moved in, but he frankly didn't care. "Now Bea, did you know ..." Ivana started and put her hand on his Rex's arm. "He's got a license to kill, baby. He's got a gun and knows how to use it. Shoot you dead if you don't watch out. A girl's gotta be careful with this one. Lord knows he broke my heart." Human, she was human but Rex cared little about their racial differences. Love and attraction, that was what he was after. Rex made a clucking sound before reaching for her hand and bringing it up his lips, to kiss it gently. "You broke mine too, I'll have you remember." There was a playful smirk around his lips. "Oh see that? Those puppy dog eyes? Gotta be careful about those. Melt a heart of ice, they do." Without warning, Rex put his arm around the woman and pulled her closer in a hug. His deep, rich laughter rang through the air again. "Now darling, I'm never going to find another date if you keep talking like that. Am I truly that bad a boyfriend?" "You got issues, boy." Her voice was low as she shook her head. "But you sure make it a ride to remember." What those issues were, only she and Rex knew. For all the constant teasing, there was still a certain trust. Silence. It had taken her three years to even get to the surface and by then, she wanted to know no more. And she wasn't the first he'd let go from his arms in the years since his wife had died. It wasn't so that he was too controlling or abusive. He wasn't even of the sticky sort, nor was he of the cheating kind. It were the secrets that killed his relationships. And about that, Rex could do nothing. His secrets were his own. |
