Everything was her fault. Everything. If she'd said something back when it happened, then maybe nothing bad this year would have happened. But she hadn't, she'd kept it all inside, and then when she finally couldn't keep it all inside anymore, she just made everything hundreds of times worse. She shouldn't have told Chase, everything would be better if she hadn't, but he had been so worried about her the whole time, and now that she was finally talking about it, she had to tell him before she couldn't talk about it anymore. But then he went and broke his promise and did something stupid and now he was crazy, and it was all her fault. She should have known that he wouldn't keep his promise. She should have just not said anything.
Mary had skipped all of her classes today. She spent all day curled up in bed, not even emerging for meals. She wasn't hungry, she wasn't even sleepy, just so tired. And so angry. And so upset. And so worried about Chase. She couldn't stand it. She wanted to yell at him for breaking the promise. She wanted to never to speak to him again because he broke her trust. She wanted to hug him and to just know that he was okay.
And worst of all, she wanted to go home. Home, where she was made to feel outcast and invisible. Home was of no comfort to her, but she wanted to be there. At least home was normal. At least Duncan wouldn't go out and do anything crazy to defend her honour or anything, and just end up getting hurt or going crazy. She wished she'd never come to Hogwarts.
Mary knew that Chase was somewhere in the castle, and that people were looking for him. She should be out there, helping to find him. But she couldn't drag herself out of bed, couldn't do more than helplessly read her journal. She couldn't even really think straight. All she knew was that Chase was crazy, and it was all her fault.
