Before and After

Chapter 1: What Came Before

Before Harry found out he was a wizard, he was known throughout his hometown of Little Whinging, Surrey as "Freak", "Boy", or "That Strange Potter Child". He was the "discard", the one no one wanted...the one no one wanted to know. Orphaned before he was 2 years old and left on a doorstep in the middle of the night with only a thin blanket to protect him from the elements. Tossed into a cupboard under the stairs like and unwanted box and making friends with the spiders that hid in the eaves of the stairwell.

Before Harry was 5, he was made to do all the cooking and cleaning for the people he was left with, whom he'd come to learn were his relatives through blood and marriage – The Dursleys. His uncle, Vernon; an overweight, overbearing beast of a man with a pencil-thin mustache on his portly face. His aunt, Petunia, his mother's sister by blood; a horse-faced, super-thin gossipy shrew, and their son, his cousin, Dudley; a fat blonde, pig-in-a-wig, spoiled rotten child who ate enough food to feed a small 3rd world country, and whose temperament matched that of his father when it came to Harry.

Before Harry knew about Hogwarts and magic, strange events began to occur whenever he was scared or upset. A teacher's hair turning blue when she blamed Harry for Dudley's coloring project being ruined and being made to stand in a corner for 10 minutes; ending up on the school roof when Dudley and his friends chased him; his hair growing overnight after his aunt had hacked his unruly locks into a grotesque disaster. And the latest incident; vanishing a whole plate-glass window on an albino snake enclosure at the zoo on Dudley's birthday.

Each of these incidents caused Harry to be beaten to within an inch of his life and locked in his cupboard for days without food or basic enmities, like a shower or the toilet.

And then came the day he turned 11.

Owls began to appear in the neighborhood...in broad daylight.

Strange letters addressed to his "Cupboard Under the Stairs" on old parchment that would not have been out of place during the days of pirates. His uncle burned those letters in the fireplace.

When the letters continued turning up in odd and random places (the latest being the inside of a dozen or so eggs when his aunt was trying to make breakfast), running from the house in the dead of night to a small, drafty hut on an island in the middle of the ocean.

The giant of a man ("Rubeus Hagrid, Keeper of the Keys and Grounds of Hogwarts – but you can call me Hagrid!") bringing him his first-ever birthday cake and introducing him to the world of magic.

Finding out what really happened to his parents.

Getting his first wand.

Meeting his first teacher...

And it is here that Harry's story diverges...

For on this day, his first-ever trip into Magical Britain, the course of Harry's life sees its first deviation from the path of the known.

And it all started with a visit to the Apothecary...
