- - -Prologue.
Hello. My name is Harry Potter. I'm 11 years old and I live with my mother's sister, Petunia, her husband, Vernon and their son, Dudley at 4 Privet Drive in Surrey, England. I came to them when I was but 15 months old, at the death of my parents, James and Lily Potter. They were killed by an evil man named Voldemort. I was told he wanted to spare my mum, but she was having none of that. She died protecting me...and activated a spell on me that would protect me the rest of my days. Albus Dumbledore, who placed me with my relatives in the first place, was unaware of the exact nature of the spell.
Dawn was breaking over the rooftops of Surrey. Petunia headed to the front door to retrieve her milk and paused on the threshold when she spied a basket on her front porch. Ignoring the letter with her name on it, she reached down to pull the small baby from within the nest of blankets. Green eyes, so like her sister's, stared up at her. She heard her husband and son coming behind her and turned to face them.
"What have you there, Pet?" Vernon asked.
"I think it's my sister's child." Petunia replied. Vernon swelled visibly and his face reddened in anger.
"I'll not have that unnaturalness in my house, Petunia! Take the brat to an orphanage or something. I refuse to share my hard earned money with him!"
"But, Vernon...I've always wanted a little girl." That stopped Vernon in his tracks.
"What did you say? I thought your sister had a boy?"
"It's definitely a girl, love." Petunia replied, removing the blanket from the baby in her arms. Little baby Harry was wearing a little pink dress, with a small pink bow in her hair. Petunia remembered the letter and bent down to get it. She opened it and read it out loud.
My dearest 'Tunia,
If you are reading this, then what James and I have feared most has come to pass and our child is now in your custody. I know you've hated the idea of me and mine being able to do things that are beyond human comprehension but I am asking a boon of my one and only sister. Take care of our baby as she were your own. And yes, I did say 'she'.
I did some studying of my own, not really trusting Dumbledore with the well-being of my family, and I found a charm in a book that belonged to our Great Aunt Muriel that would ensure Harry's safety for the rest of her life. It would allow me, upon my death, and at a great sacrifice, to change Harry in such a way that she would be protected in whatever place she calls home. If it works, Harry will forever be a girl and I hope she forgives me for it one day.
I know how much you've wanted a girl and I ask that you treat her as if she were your own. I've taken the liberty of officially registering a name change for her both in our world and the wizarding one. She will forever be known as Harrietta 'Harry' Lillian Jamie Potter.
Please do this for me, my sister. I love you, I always have.
Your sister forever and beyond,
Petunia looked at her husband, tears in her eyes and a hardened resolve in her heart.
"I'm keeping her, Vernon."
"But, Petunia, love-"
"I'm keeping her. She will have use of Dudley's other bedroom. He doesn't need it."
"Pet, it's not natural!"
"She is my sister's child, Vernon! I will not sweep her under the rug like yesterday's dirt! Do not go against me, or I will take Dudley and leave."
Under his wife's fierce glare and the resolve in her eyes, Vernon gave in.
For the next 10 years, Harry lived a happy and healthy existence with her mother's family and she grew into a well-rounded and loved individual. She even had her uncle wrapped around her finger.
Petunia made sure to tell Harry about her parents and the school they went to and the things she could do. If the dishes suddenly washed themselves or the clothes were suddenly sparkling clean, The Dursley Family just shook their heads and wondered why they were so afraid of magic before.
And then came my Hogwarts letter...addressed to
Mr Harry Potter. I guess no one told Dumbledore about my mum's spell. Hogwarts, and the Wizarding World, are going to be in for a surprise...
