Somehow, the guest list for family dinner always managed to spiral out of control. How a simply Sunday dinner had turned into a task not dissimilar from a holiday meal was beyond Lucia, but any complaint she made was half-hearted. She had a beautiful home and family, and who could be moved to complain about the good fortune of having everyone near enough to get together in this way? By five o’clock Sunday evening, everything had come together and Lucia was dressed and ready to entertain. Now it was time to wait for her guests’ arrivals.
Usually calm and collected, the twinge of anxiety Lucia felt had her pacing the floors, an unusual behavior for her that she had been engaging in more often as of late. She hadn’t told her husband or children that they would be meeting a new cousin this evening, still uncertain as to whether or not Lucrezia would be attending. She exercised the nervous energy by checking the turkey in the oven as well as the various pots simmering on the stove. She had to keep a close eye on all of it anyway, the men of the Morelli family had the annoying habit of picking at her cooking before she had had the opportunity to put it on the table.
