Character Name: Caius Dominic Finch, or Cai. Age: 17 Birthday: January 28th Personality/History: Caius Finch is in his second to last year at London College, studying Design and Technology and a couple of other things. He likes making things, especially with wood. He’s a practical person and likes always having something to do. Often if he's not needed at home you’ll find him clearing leaves out of neighbourhood gutters or mowing lawns.
He’s patient with everybody except himself and gets frustrated when he can’t do things right straight away.
He lives in a pink house with his grandmother Nonnie and his grandfather Dominic, who do part time fostering of younger kids so the house is never quiet. He likes being the oldest sibling because he likes being in charge.
Nonnie and Dom are his mother’s parents. His mother was young when she had him, only nineteen when she got pregnant to Ross, a man who was cheating on his pregnant wife (a fact his mother found out later). She had only moved out of home a year before, but moved back in when she was pregnant, and her parents had as much of a hand in raising him as she did. His grandmother named him Caius after her father. There’s lots of family legends about old Caius.
When he started school he started asking about his dad, so his mum set them up to spend some weekends together. He had a few holidays at his dad’s place and this is where he met his half brother Danny, who is six months older than him. Danny stopped visiting his dad when Danny was seven, and after that, weekends and holidays at Ross’s didn’t have the same appeal. When Cai was seven, his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, and Cai’s weekend became all about him and his mother instead. When he was ten, she died.
When he was twelve, he died too. But only briefly, during surgery after the school shooting.
As things go, he’s doing okay with recovery but he still gets nightmares about being trapped in a place and knowing he’s going to die.
He wasn’t that well known at London College till recently. He was dating a girl called Alex for almost a year but it didn’t work out. Alex was pretty cut up about it, and her friends, especially one Imogene-Hope, jumped to her defense, and since Cai was very cagey about his reasons for breaking up with her, now there are rumours going around school that he’s gay. He was already getting some flak for living in a pink house and being a bit prone to fainting, so he has a little bit of notoriety, now.
Cai wouldn’t mind the rumours, apart from the fact that his friends believe them. They’ve started to treat him differently and sometimes not invite him to stuff. It’s not that they have a problem with it, they say, they just want him to tell them the truth. And since Cai won’t, they’re kind of annoyed that he’s keeping secrets and won’t trust them.
He has oodles of faith in people though, and he’s sure that his friends will get over it if he gives them some time. Well, he tries to be sure. He tries not to hold grudges, and he is really sorry he hurt Alex, and he doesn’t blame her friends for starting the rumour because they were only doing it to make her feel less rejected.
He thinks it might be for the best that he doesn’t get too close to anyone, anyway.
