The moment she'd said it, Max's lips had spread into a small and amused smile. He didn't like that this was hard for her, of course, but he couldn't help but be slightly amused by her phrasing.
"Of course," he nodded. "I understand perfectly."
There was more to say, but he was interrupted by Danny stomping back into the room, waving around several pieces of paper. "Mum, what the hell?!" he demanded, and Max rose his eyebrows in shock. "You told me we were fine, but we have all these past due notices?! Are we going to lose the house?!"
Max bit his lip and glanced back and forth between them before rising from his chair. "Er...I think that's my cue to go..."
