Taking a Step Back
Who: Aidan, Olly, Rosie, and Trick
What: New plan neither of them really likes
When: July 8th, late Tuesday Morning
Where: Ink Inc.
Warning: Language

Ink Inc had been closed yesterday due to both Olly and Trick dealing with what happened to Jack. But since the tattoo shop was Olly's main source of income and a great deal of Trick's, it was back to work the next day. He headed for work at his usual time, about an hour before open. Part of the reason it was hard for Siobhan to get a job was that Olly usually spent ten or eleven hours at day at work, longer some days. While he technically worked for Trick, like his boss and best friend, he worked on commission. Business was always good, but it was long hours. Siobhan needed the hours in the morning to rest, since she'd be wrangling their three pups all day by herself after he went to work.

Unlocking the shop door and letting himself in, Olly shrugged out of his cut and pulled off the light sweatshirt he was wearing under it. He hung them both up, then straightened out his long hair a little. At work Olly usually work tank tops or cut off tee shirts so people could easily see his ink. He was the shop's walking example board, proof their claims they could tattoo weres permanently. Plus it was advertising for Trick's work, since he'd done all of Olly's tattoos. His were much simpler in design than Trick's elaborate pieces. His best friend's full sleeve probably looked daunting to people looking to get their first tattoo, where Olly's simpler designs were a little less intimidating.

Their tattoos were differently themed, too. Almost all of Trick's were intricate designs that featured roses prominently. But they were heavy and serious in sentiment, which contrasted sharply with his best friend's fun loving personality. Trick worked out his demons in his ink, Olly had decided. Olly's tattoos, on the other hand, were pretty lighthearted. The little pawprints on his chest to represent his pups, the Bewitched logo on his forearm for Siobhan, and the other tattoo for his wife other people rarely saw all spoke of Olly's quirky sense of humor.

He didn't feel very much like humor this morning though. Trick wasn't in the shop yet, so he headed into the back room. His best friend wasn't there, but he'd be showing up soon. Knowing Trick and Rosie, they might still be going at it and lost track of time. Wouldn't be the first time. Olly wouldn't condemn them for it, especially with the shitty conversation he had to have with Trick about letting the cops handle the gangbangers. It didn't sit well with him on any level, but Jack had asked him directly to stay out of it. He couldn't tell his twin no over something like that.

I think you are.

The words didn't register at first, but they did bounce around in her brain a few times until finally deciding to stick. I think you're pregnant. Out of anybody else, the phrase would've been ludicrous, weird at best- but this was Olly, who almost literally had the nose of a bloodhound, and knew when she had plans to make fried chicken simply by the spices out on the table.

Which meant she was probably pregnant... and that sucked the air out of her lungs.

"What?" is all she could get out, her expression lingering somewhere between shock and worry. After the chemo, she'd been told her system would basically be useless for the rest of her life. She hadn't even had a period since before she was diagnosed. Not anything that could rightly be called one, anyway.

"Are you sure?"

Better than bloodhound, really. Few animals had a better sense of smell than wolf. Olly had learned to funnel out the majority of the olfactory static, but certain smells stood out.

Like a pregnant female. It was one of the best smells in the world, honestly. Shiva had found out the hard way when she was pregnant with Kiera how comforting and nice that scent was. Because not only had he been wanting to cuddle her more, their kids were all over her twice as much. Which was another reason to say something. Before Jackie noticed and let the proverbial cat out of the bag.

Olly was figuring that would be her reaction. "Being alone in a room with you without any other scents to distract me?" he said. "Yeah, I'm sure." He rubbed his chin, ruffling the hair there. "Pretty familiar with the smell by now."

She hadn't been feeling any different... Actually, now that she was thinking about it, her own sense of smell had been a bit sharper lately, and she'd had cherry yogurt for breakfast every day for the last two weeks. She'd craved cherries for most of both pregnancies with the boys, but it'd been more than fifteen years since then. She hadn't drawn any kind of connection. Especially with her current health issues.

Hell, even if she hadn't had cancer- she was forty years old. This was on the highest scale of 'unlikely'.

"Do you..." Rosie's brows furrowed and she looked at the table, then back up to Olly. "Do you know how far along?"

Olly shook his head. "Sorry," he said. "It isn't that exacting. With Kiera it was another week after I noticed before a pregnancy test showed anything. But that was with the woman I've spent hours alone with everyday for the better part of six years. I know Shiva's scent better than anyone's, probably even better than Jack's. I'll notice something different about her long before anybody else. So you're probably further along than she was." It wasn't much, but it was something.

All Rose could do was nod, her face still stuck in an expression of disbelief. She was a high school drop-out with barely any education, but she'd been through two full-term pregnancies before and cervical cancer. She already knew how this was going to be received by the doctors.

And then there was the boys... and Trick.

"I-" She had nothing. Not until it all settled in. "I mean... thanks for tellin' me, I guess."

Yeah, Olly wasn't sure what she could even do with the information, but Shiva had pointed out the night before Rosie needed to know. He shrugged kind of helplessly. "You needed to know," he said almost helplessly. He knew what her doctors would say and even touched on the subject when he'd talked to his wife about it the night before. "The only person I've mentioned it to is Shiva. We won't say anything to anybody else. Okay?"

After Aidan left, Trick realized that Olly had been gone a pretty long time. A lot longer than it took to return one plate. He assumed, at first, that he was probably letting the little back and forth bickering between father and son cool off a bit, but after awhile, even that was taking too long. So Trick hauled himself off of his chair and headed upstairs.

When he opened the door, all he caught was 'won't say anything to anybody else', or something like that. Of course his mind went to the most obvious thing that wasn't privy to other people's knowledge right off the bat. "Won't tell anyone what?," he asked. "Shiv pregnant again?," he asked, smirking a little. "We all kind of figured that'd happen."

His eyes flicked to Olly and then to Rosie, a little laughter still in them as he smiled at his friend and wife. At least until he realized that they weren't looking exactly thrilled. He blinked and the smile faded. "What?" He wasn't sure what he'd just walked in on, but by the looks on their faces, it wasn't happy news.

Okay, in different circumstances, that perfectly logical assumption would have been a lot more amusing. Olly shook his head at Trick, pushing off the counter he'd been leaning on. "I'm gonna go prep for open," he said, catching Rosie's eyes and pulling the most supportive, comforting emotions he could to the surface for her. Then he headed back downstairs.

Rosie appreciated Olly's gesture- at least she would later, when she'd had more time to recognize it for what it was. Right now, her stomach was tight with a ball of wired nerves that hadn't been there ten minutes ago. Once Olly was gone and the door shut behind him, her eyes flicked up to her husband's face.

"Are ya ready for this, love?" she said, more breath than voice. Her anxiety and shock manifesting in a strange, scared smile that tugged at her lips. "Apparently I'm pregnant."

Trick watched Olly as he shook his head. Then he got up and left and that only made the man more aware of the seriousness of the conversation he was apparently about to have with his wife. The click of the door as it closed was as loud as thunder in Patrick's ears.

He looked then to his wife at her preparatory words. There was shock written all over her face, and a smile of sorts upon her lips, but the words that she said next sure as hell weren't the ones that he was expecting. His brows went up in the middle and he blinked a little, just staring at Rosie for what felt like an eternity.

"What?," he finally breathed out. He was shocked, quite obviously, it was written all over his face. His wife had been through so much over the last few years that any thought of having more children wasn't something that had crossed his mind. He thought he was too damn old to have any more kids and in all honest, he thought that the cancer had done away with any ability Rosie might have had to even be able to conceive at all. He hadn't ever asked because they'd never really expected to have more than the boys. Yet here she was, telling him she was pregnant and all he could do was stare at her open mouthed.

He was terrified. There were a million different reasons for that rushing through his head, but Rosie's health and safety were the most prominent. He would have asked her if she was sure, but Olly knew. He had to have known if he was up here talking to her about it. His nose could smell it a mile away. Especially with the brood he was bringing up.

"Holy hell," he breathed out finally, taking the few steps that were between himself an his wife and pulling her in against him. He just held her close, fingers in her hair as he tried to process what he'd just learned. "It's gonna be okay," he told her, kissing the side of her head, against her hair. "No matter what, it's gonna be okay."
