I'm only a man with a candle to guide me
Who: Mikhail and Raj
What: More aftermath
When: Friday, June 19th, wee hours of the morning
Where: Raj's apartment
Warning: TBD

Mikhail had stayed with Raj the day after Danny's death, waiting until his lover went to work before he left. He needed to clear his head, deal with the sins he'd absorbed from the werewolf. The familiar, soul crushing feelings of impotent rage, guilt, and loneliness. He knew how it felt to be certain your life had no meaning and you could only destroy. Rich had taught him to turn this inwards, to punish himself and the monsters instead of innocent people. But how easily it could have played out differently.

How easily he could have become just like Danny. Destructive, bitter, hurting everyone around him because of his own pain. The thought made Mikhail's stomach churn.

Mikhail had only managed to stay away for a day. Avoiding Raj when he wanted nothing more than the comfort of the wolf's presence wasn't working. Maybe he was right, maybe the self-denial was only making his inner demon hungrier. Perhaps drowning it in good things was the best way to fight it. The demon loved misery and destruction. There was only peace and comfort to be found in the company of the young wolf.

He waited until it was late enough he knew Rajesh would be home from work before returning. Mikhail vaguely realized he should have probably left a note or text message, something to let his lover know he wasn't gone for good. Even though all of his possessions were there except the clothes he was wearing and the minimal weapons he felt comfortable leaving the house with. Raj would know he wasn't leaving forever, right?

Unlocking the door and letting himself into the apartment, Mikhail went in search of his lover. "I'm sorry," he apologized immediately. "I should have said something before I left." He knew how Raj still worried every time he turned his back when Mikhail was out of sorts the gypsy might just disappear for good. "I didn't mean to worry you."

Raj had expected Mikhail to leave. He didn't blame him. There had been a lot of shit that went down and he knew his lover would need to decompress. Mikhail tended to do that better alone. He always came back, so Raj tried not to worry too much while he was gone. He'd gone to work the following day and tried not to spend every waking second thinking about Mikhail and failed miserably. He returned home that night and spent most of the evening with the other man on his mind.

After he'd showered, he took up residence on the sofa and listened to the sounds of the night. It was only when he heard the sound of the key in the lock that he sat up on the couch and turned his head towards the door. He wasn't sure how long he'd thought Mikhail would stay gone, but he supposed he thought it would be longer than a day. He blinked a little, but listened to what Mikhail had to say.

"I knew you'd come back," he told him, shaking his head a little. "You've been through a lot. Figured that you needed to clear your head." Maybe in the back of his mind he'd thought that Mikhail would run away for good, but he tried to ignore that tiny voice. He knew that he didn't mean to worry him, though, so the apology was unneeded. "You're here now," he told him, shrugging his shoulder. "No need to apologize. Are you alright?"

Mikhail used to believe it was better for him to do everything alone. Now he wasn't so sure. Raj's understanding helped more than he wanted to admit. "I did," he agreed. Not that his head felt any clearer. Slipping off his boots and socks, he deposited the former by the door and the latter in the hamper as he went to go wash his hands and face. He probably needed a shower, but right now he just wanted to be close to Raj. "Tired. A little hungry." He was not all right at all, but he didn't exactly know how to articulate it. Especially considering who's sins he was wrestling with. Mikhail wouldn't blame Raj for having no sympathy for Danny. Not after what the man had done to his family.

Raj watched Mikhail from the sofa as he got rid of his shoes and his socks. He could feel all the uncertainty that Mikhail felt coming off of him in waves. He did feel some sympathy for Danny because he hadn't always been the man that he was at the end. He wasn't always a monster. There was a time when Raj loved Danny like a brother because he treated Chahna well and he loved her. He would have done anything for her once upon a time, but that had changed and the Danny he'd once known and loved hadn't been that man in a long, long time. That didn't make him feel any better about his life being over, but it was about all that he had to hold onto to keep himself from losing it.

"Come sit," he told him. "I can make you something to eat."

Mikhail moved to sit as he was bidden. Following instructions and familiar routines was easier than thinking for himself right now. "I'd like that," he said. "Thank you." Shaking off the fog he'd been in for the last couple days a little, Mikhail's brows furrowed. "Have you spoken to your sister? Is she doing better?" He remembered the anguished thoughts of Chahna when she'd collapsed into him.

Once Mikhail had settled, Raj stole a kiss from him, then moved to the kitchen so he could start some food for him. The questions earned Mikhail a little sigh. "She's about as good as can be expected," he told him honestly. "She blames herself. She'll be alright, but it's going to take some time." Danny's death had undone months - maybe even years - of progress that Chahna had made.

"What about you?," he asked him. "Are you doing better?" He knew that Mikhail had taken on those sins inside of Danny. Perhaps Chahna wasn't the only one with feelings that she couldn't deal with.

Mikhail nodded. He'd hoped for something better than that, but knew from experience that years of trauma and abuse couldn't be undone in a day. The next question was met with a moment of silence before he shrugged. "The scratches and bruises are almost gone," he said. "I'll be all right." It would just take time, right?

Physically, Mikhail was healing, but that wasn't exactly what Raj had meant. He assured him that he'd be alright, but Raj knew that there was more weighing on his lover than just the physical wounds he'd endured. He was quiet until he finished making Mikhail's food, then returned to the sofa with a plate of food and a glass of drink to wash it down with. He handed both to Mikhail and settled onto the sofa with him.

"Are you sure you're going to be alright?," he asked him. "I know that everything couldn't have been easy for you..."

He figured that wasn't what Raj meant, but he'd opted for the physical, since he could guarantee that. Mikhail shook his head. "It's just different than before," he explained. "The monst- the ones I killed before were monsters. Except Mama and Rich. Their sins made me angry, feel more justified in my crusade. I was a mess after Mama died, she was my everything. But Rich and now Danny. It's just...sad." Was sad the word he wanted? He wasn't sure. "It hurts. It's hard to breathe and I can't stop thinking about their regrets." It probably wasn't a very good explanation, but it was the best one Mikhail had.

"Because Danny wasn't always a monster," he said, nodding a little. "So you feel bad because maybe it didn't have to end up the way that it did?" He wondered if that was true himself. He wondered if there was some other way to end things without Danny having to die, but that was a regret that he was going to have to live with. He couldn't bring the man back now, whether he'd deserved to die or not.

"What regrets did he have?," he asked after a long moment, not even sure that he wanted to know, but feeling like he needed to know.

"Danny wasn't a monster," he muttered, standing up and stepping past Raj so he could pace. He wasn't good at sitting still when he was conflicted. "He was bitter, lonely, and desperate." Mikhail knew those feelings all too well. "His world was spiraling more and more out of his control. He was trying to get back some of that control. Even though he knew what he was doing was wrong. He was so far gone he didn't care if he lived or died. He just wanted to control it." That was the kicker. Mikhail had tried to do the exact same thing. Eli and Max had refused to kill him. He hadn't hesitated to kill Danny. "Maybe you were right. Maybe he didn't need to die."

"If Danny hadn't died, he would have kept spiraling," Raj said, shaking his head. "He would have hurt Chahna, or Marcus, or the baby. Maybe he wouldn't have meant to, or even wanted to, but he would have done it anyway. Maybe I wish that he hadn't had to die, but the alternative, at least for me, was way worse. If I had to go through all this again, I would, because Chahna and the kids are alive and they might not have been if this turned out any other way."

He leaned back against the sofa and sighed. "I know that Danny didn't mean for any of this to happen, but it did."

Mikhail sighed. "I didn't," he reminded Raj. "When you and the Laskos stopped me and refused to let me die." That was one of the things really bothering him. The feelings, the situation was so similar. Mikhail cared more about collateral damage, but he wasn't a wolf and protecting innocents was ingrained in his psyche thanks to Rich's conditioning and training. "Danny would have never hurt Marcus," he snapped, not upset at Raj but at the turmoil inside him. "He didn't want to hurt your sister. He felt betrayed. He still- still loved her. Possessively. Like you do with me. That's why the leaving bothers you. Because wolves don't let go of theirs. Ever. Not willingly."

Having Mikhail defend Danny was surprising. It caught Raj a little off guard, but he didn't say as much. There was no need. Maybe deep down he knew that Danny wouldn't have wanted to hurt him, but that didn't mean he wouldn't have. "He wouldn't have wanted to hurt them, but he would have. He hurt Enya before because she tried to defend my sister. She got in between them. I'm sure he felt guilty about it, but it still happened. I don't doubt for a second it would have happened again. He wouldn't have meant for it to, he would have hated himself for it, but it would have happened again."

He let out a breath, pushed his hand through his hair, and nodded. "No, they don't," he agreed. "Which is exactly the reason that he wouldn't have stopped. Why he would have kept spiraling. Danny... whatever made him the man he used to be withered away until it was so hidden underneath everything that this was the only choice."

He looked up at Mikhail as he paced, knowing that there was more to this conversation than what was on the surface. "You're not Danny," he finally told him. "And he isn't you. Maybe the situations are similar, but you're not the same person."

Mikhail wasn't sure he was defending Danny. Or why he was if he was. He sighed when Raj drew the parallel between Enya getting caught in the crossfire. "I didn't want April to get hurt, but she almost did," he reminded his lover. If his recovery from the blow to the head or his reflexes had been slower, the loaded down bookcase would have landed on her instead of him.

"Danny didn't murder people for fifteen years," he countered. "He did a lot of bad things, but nothing as bad as I have. Why was I worth sparing and not him?" He'd been so certain before he'd eaten Danny's sins that he needed to die. But between the weight of Danny's sins and the painful thoughts that had flooded into him from Chahna had him doubting everything. "You wouldn't let me die, even when I thought I wanted to. But you let me kill Danny. Why?"

The questions that Mikhail had for him caught Raj off guard. He wasn't sure how to respond or if his response would make any sort of difference to the man. He decided to just be honest. "I don't know," he told him simply. "I felt like you didn't deserve to die. And maybe I felt like Danny didn't either, but I was afraid that if this didn't end now that he would just keep coming for Chahna until he hurt her or the kids. Maybe he wouldn't have meant to, but I felt like it would have happened. I shouldn't have let you do it. I should have done it myself, but I was weak. I wish I hadn't been so weak." That was his regret to bear, though, not Mikhail's.

He swallowed, looked down at his palms, then back up at Mikhail again. "I'm sorry that you were the one to end this. I should have done it myself."

Mikhail balked visibly. "You were not weak," he snapped. "Killing someone to stop them from hurting others is easy. It's easy to tell yourself you saved so many more lives. I told myself that every time I killed. You don't have to be strong to kill someone. It's too easy to solve a problem that way."

He shook his head. "I wouldn't have let you do it alone. His blood would have been on my hands and his sins in my head even if you'd tried to do it yourself. I wasn't going to let him hurt you or your family anymore." Mikhail sighed and scraped his hands through his hair. "It never hurts. Some of things they've done to others, it makes me angry. Feel like I was justified. But not this time. It's just such a waste. He wasted everything he'd been given." Everything Mikhail could never have. "And it doesn't make sense. He wasn't evil. He wasn't insane. He just...gave up and blamed everyone else for his problems."

[info]unchainedwolf

"It is a waste," Raj said with a nod, finally getting up from his seat on the sofa and closing the distance between himself and his lover. "Danny could have been a million things, he could have done a million things, but he didn't want to. If he wanted to change, he could have tried harder. He didn't. Maybe he wasn't a monster, but he wasn't a good person either. He gave up. And that's the difference between you and him. He gave up and you haven't." He hoped that Mikhail never would give up.

"I don't know how to make it make sense because it doesn't. He had hundreds of chances to change himself and he could have kept Chahna. He could have turned his life around, but blaming people was easier than taking on the blame himself." Raj sighed and wrapped his arms around Mikhail, resting his cheek against the man's shoulder and closing his eyes. "I'm sorry that it hurts, Mik. If I could take it all away, you know I would."

"It is not that easy to change, Rajesh," he reminded his lover. "Especially when you feel the situation is so hopeless you do something you know is desperately stupid to try and end it." He gave Raj a pointed look. "I thought I had nothing to live for. He was trying to desperately reclaim the family he lost. Neither of us cared who we hurt in the process. That bothers me."

Mikhail sighed. He knew Raj was right. "Blaming myself didn't help me any," he reminded his lover stubbornly. "You would never let anyone in the world hurt if you could, Rajesh. Because you're good." Which bothered Mikhail sometimes more than he wanted to admit. No matter how much Raj insisted he wasn't all bad, Mikhail couldn't help but compare his reactions to his werewolf lovers. Raj hadn't even thought to actually kill Danny until he realized that was Mikhail's intention. And he was kicking himself for not killing Danny himself.

"You make it hurt less," he assured Raj. "And no, I would not go back and change anything that happened. I only wish I'd had the vision sooner so your family didn't suffer the way they did. That is the only thing I'd have done differently." Danny would have likely forced them to kill him either way. His life would be wasted, Danny's brothers would still suffer the loss of their brother. Such a waste.

No, it wasn't easy to change. His words made him feel a little more guilty about the situation because Danny felt much the way that Mikhail had felt that day he'd tried to end his own life. "But you are different," he told him. "You both were trying desperately to end the situation once and for all. The difference is that you listened to reason. Danny wouldn't. He would have forced us to kill him no matter what choices we made. You saw enough hope to let yourself go on. That is the difference between you and Danny; you still had hope and he didn't.

He felt better when Mikhail admitted that he made him hurt less. It was a small victory, but it felt so big. "And that," he said, letting out a breath at Mikhail's words about what he would have done differently. "That is why you are good too," he told him. "Because you would have protected me and my family no matter what."

Mikhail exhaled heavily. "No, I was too tired and hurt to argue afterwards," he reminded Raj. "Hope came much later." It had been a struggle and required a lot of reinforcement from Raj and Quill before he began to hope for something better than an end. It was still a struggle. Mikhail still felt purposeless and lost. But he wasn't alone, which made it easier to cope with.

He shrugged. "Of course I would," he said. "They're your family. The nearest thing to your heart. I would never let anything happen to them if it's in my power to stop it." Even if it cost his own life. In truth, Mikhail couldn't think of a more noble end. When he died, that would be how he wished to go. Not a monster like he had planned, but protecting an innocent soul.

Raj didn't argue. Maybe the hope hadn't been there at first, but it had eventually come. He couldn't pretend to understand all the reasons why Mikhail was worth saving and Danny hadn't been. He clung to the fact that everything happened for a reason. Mikhail was there because he needed to be. There was a greater purpose for him, Raj was sure of that more than anything else.

He pulled back enough to look at Mikhail, smiling at the honesty in his words. "And that's why I love you," he told him. Because he was protective, good, and because there was something in Mikhail's soul that called out to him.

Mikhail shrugged again. "As I love you," he said. "Even though you're too good for me." Which was true, even if Rajesh denied it. "And because you are the best cook in the world." Now that the emotional trauma had lessened his stomach was reminding him he hadn't eaten since that morning. Sitting down on the couch, he picked up the plate and pretty much started inhaling the food. Which was amazing as always.

Raj never got tired of hearing Mikhail tell him he loved him or that he was a good cook. He shook his head when he commented that he was too good for him, disbelieving it as always. "I knew you loved me just for my food," he teased, sitting down again on the sofa and grinning softly at Mikhail as he finished off his plate in record time.

"I'm glad you didn't stay gone very long," he told him. "I'm getting used to you taking up half the bed," he teased.

"Well, it's amazing food," Mikhail joked after swallowing a mouthful. He was starting to relax more when he was alone with Rajesh. The young werewolf made it easy to let his guard down a little. Not only were his chances of easily harming Rajesh less, but the wolf's charm was disarming in itself. When he was with Raj, it was as close to Mikhail could remember being happy since he was a very young child.

Raj could feel the difference in Mikhail from the first time he'd seen him and now. He was a different man. He felt lighter. Maybe all of Mikhail's concerns and worries hadn't gone away, but they were less. For now, that was good enough for Raj.

His worries were lighter, for now. It wouldn't always be this way. But for now, things were manageable. His mind wandered back to the conversation they had been having. "Do we need to be on guard for Danny's brothers?" he asked. He couldn't imagine them not wanting revenge of some sort. Even if they only thought Raj had killed their brother and Danny had brought it on himself. Mikhail knew how to hunt werewolves, his knowledge of their culture was fairly limited. But he planned to be prepared in case anyone tried to harm his lover in revenge.

Raj let out a breath and leaned back against the cushions of the sofa where they sat together. "Probably," he told him. It was better to be cautious without cause than to not worry and have a reason to. "No matter what they think happened, they're not going to be pleased that he's gone," he said. Whether or not they had banished the brother in question made little difference. He was family and he'd been killed. Even if he did deserve it, Raj knew that they likely wouldn't take it lying down.

"He was banished and considered as good as dead to them, but family ties are pretty strong. Their pack is more traditional, but I don't think they'll be happy that he's gone and will probably try to make it even." Which put them both in danger as well as the people in the McCreary pack. He didn't want to think about it, but it was likely.

"He was their blood," Mikhail pointed out. "It is one thing for blood to fight blood, but when outsiders fight your blood, they become the enemy. The Rom are similar that way." He took another bite of food. "I'll watch you. Just in case." Not that Rajesh wasn't capable of defending himself, but wolves rarely did things alone and no matter how hale and strong his lover was, getting ganged up on would be bad. Mikhail had no problems evening the odds.

He nodded. Mikhail understood. "Exactly. The fact that it was tied to the McCreary pack doesn't help," he sighed. "There was bad blood there before this ever happened. If someone is already your enemy, well, it's worse." He appreciated the fact that Mikhail intended to watch him just in case. He knew he was capable of defending himself, but the Reddings could come in numbers and there was only so much he could do if he'd been ganged up on. He knew that as well as Mikhail did. "Yeah, thanks. Certainly can't hurt to have someone else in my corner if things go south."

Mikhail had never asked what the 'bad blood' between the Redding and McCreary packs were. He assumed a lot of it had to do with Chahna leaving her ex-husband's pack for the McCrearys. Since her children were their blood
and now in another pack. But it seemed there was more to it than that. Part of him said that it was none of his business. He wasn't a wolf, but an outsider. But part of him wanted to understand the feud. "Your sister leaving the pack isn't the only bad blood?" he asked finally. If Raj wanted to tell him, he could.

Raj shook his head. "No," he told him honestly. "I mean, sure, that's part of it now. Added insult to injury, I guess. The real friction started because Jack used to date Micah Redding. Picked her pack over him or something. Long and the short of it. I don't think he ever really got over it. So losing Chahna to the McCreary pack didn't help and having Danny killed basically in conjunction with the McCreary clan? It isn't going to go over well." Which was the understatement of the century.

Raj couldn't keep the small laugh in at Mikhail's words, shaking his head because he knew that it sounded more convoluted than any daytime drama. "I know," he said. "Trust me, I don't know how I keep up with half of it. I think that's the reason I don't watch too many television shows. I could never keep up with more drama than I've already got in my life," he teased.

Soap operas were becoming another one of Mikhail's guilty pleasures. For the same reason he enjoyed the dramatic works of the Bronte sisters. It was just so unreal and ridiculous, it was easy to get lost in. "I don't know," he said. "Some of them are pretty ridiculous. Except the one about vampires. They got everything wrong." He wasn't that surprised. Thanks to their crusade against the species, Mikhail hadn't heard of actual vampire activity in over five years. The bloodsuckers were as good as extinct. Small blessings.

He laughed at the comment. "I think you like watching the supernatural ones to pick apart what they do wrong," he teased, nudging him gently with his elbow, grinning broadly at his lover. It was amusing at the very least. The fact that he read all the Bronte books was amusing too. The little things about Mikhail were what he fell in love with the most.
