Your hands protect the flames
Who: Jayne and Mikhail, later Max
What: A warning
When: March 13th, Early Friday evening
Where: Outside a shop near Max and Jayne's house, then Stumble Inn
Warning: Language

Mikhail was still reeling a little from his encounter with Raj. He needed to focus back on the task that had brought him to Chicago. His destiny, whatever it was, lay in confronting Elias Lasko. Just Elias. That meant keeping his twin brother out of it. Since Max's wife was very pregnant, perhaps it wouldn't be as difficult as he hoped.

He watched the young brunette leave the house she shared with her husband. It looked like something out of a storybook, with the white picket fence and little window boxes. Nothing like he would have ever dreamed any hunter would have chosen. It was so far from the world he and the Laskos had lived in it might as well be from another world. It was from another world. Perhaps that's why Max liked it.

He trailed her to the store, then waited until Jayne was finished with her shopping. He bumped into her 'by accident', sending her bag and its contents tumbling to the sidewalk. "Oh, I'm sorry," he apologized, immediately bending to help her retrieve them. It was a simple, well played ruse, but it allowed him to get close to the witch without drawing attention overmuch.

Jayne had gone to the store to retrieve a few little things. Little things in the form of s'mores ingredients all for the simple purpose of pigging out like a wild animal the moment she got the chocolate melted enough to be deliciously sticky. She had been much more focused on the bag and its' contents than where she was going, so she was startled when she was bumped into. Immediately her fingertips brushed over her overly protruding stomach.

It was just an accident, but she couldn't bend down to retrieve the items herself, not without some help, so she let him collect them instead. It wasn't until the man stood that she realized who he was and her face paled. Max had shown her the video of Mikhail a few times and she would have recognized his face anywhere. She swallowed. Surely he didn't mean to hurt her on a crowded street.

"It's fine," she said. "Thank you. I'll just be going." Anything to get her back into her heavily warded house and away from the man who stood before her.

"I'm not going to hurt you," he told her. "I don't want to hurt your husband either. I want him to stay out of this. For your sake. For her sake. Please, convince him. For your daughter, if nothing else." Mikhail didn't want to threaten her, but he was hoping she'd taking his warning to heart.

Hearing this man talk about her child and use the correct pronoun made her sick to her stomach. The fact that he wasn't really threatening her husband, but alluding to the fact that he could get hurt made her want to run down to the bar as quickly as she could. That, however, would be impossible. She knew she should have taken the car. Not that she figured it would have done much good.

"Why do you want him to stay out of it?," she asked him. "He won't. Elias is his brother, the only family he has left. He's not going to just back down if he thinks that he's in danger." Which was the truth. Convincing Max not to help Elias wasn't going to fly.

Mikhail sighed. "Because it doesn't involve him," he said. "Whatever will happen, it's between me and Elias. Your husband needs to respect that. He's not a part of it. He has more important things to concern himself with." He looked down. Yes, she was close to her time. He could tell that without even touching her. "You need him now. So does she. Talk to him. Tell him you need him. He gave up his world for you, he will listen." He hoped anyway.

Jayne didn't like the way any of that sounded. Of course she needed Max, but she knew that Max needed Elias just as much. They both did. She didn't like the thought of Elias going into the situation alone any more than she liked the thought of Max joining him. "And what if he doesn't listen?," she asked him. "What are you going to do to him?" She wasn't certain she wanted to know or to hear him even contemplate on the things he'd do to her husband. She clutched her back tightly against her side and tried not to let herself look as frightened as she felt.

Mikhail sighed. "I don't know," he said. "It depends on what he does. What they do. I just know what I saw. And it was just Elias. Not Max. Max isn't supposed to be there." He scraped his hands through his hair. "I am asking you to protect him from himself. Whatever happens, it's not supposed to involve him. That's all I know. Please, talk to him."

Jayne worried her lower lip. She didn't like the way that this was going, but she couldn't really do much about it. "Okay," she finally allowed herself to say. "I'll talk to him." For whatever reason, he wanted to get Elias alone. Jayne highly doubted that was going to work out like he planned, but she was going to do what she had to do to keep her child safe and to keep her husband safe. At the moment, she wasn't entirely sure how to do that. "I'll talk to him, but I can't make any promises."

Mikhail nodded, pressing his palms together in front of him in a sign of gratitude. "That is all I ask," he told her. "Thank you." Hopefully, she could convince her husband to stay out of the confrontation. Perhaps even drive Elias into looking for Mikhail so he didn't have to go through with the part of his plan. He doubted he'd be that fortunate. The Lasko brothers seemed to be dead set on avoiding him. He waited until Jayne walked away and to the safety of her well warded house before disappearing down a nearby alley.

Jayne stayed in the house only long enough to drop the bag on the counter top and grab the keys to her car. Over the last few weeks, she'd turned into a bit of a hermit, after hearing about Mikhail, she only left the house during daylight and only if she wasn't going far. Now, though, she didn't have that option.

It didn't take her long to get to the bar and once there, she immediately went looking for her husband. When she didn't find him behind the bar, she went to the office and didn't bother knocking before pushing the door open.

Max was just about to head out to the bar again after finishing an early dinner. It wasn't super busy yet. He was immediately worried when his wife came through the office door. "It is time?" he asked immediately. "Princess, you should have called me." He frowned, his concern worsening when he saw her face. "What happened? What's wrong?"

Jayne shook her head and closed the door behind her. She could tell that he was already worrying even before he opened his mouth and said as much. She couldn't blame him because she was worrying too. Desperately.

"No," she said. It wasn't time, not yet. Thank god for small favors. Labor she thought she could handle, this though, well, she wasn't so sure. "I went to the store to get a few things," she told him. "On my way back that man... the one you warned me about, he stopped me. Asked me to warn you to stay away. Said this whole thing was between him and Eli and that I needed to convince you to stay out of it for our daughter's sake."

Max immediately pulled Jayne into his arms. As much for his own comfort as hers. "He what?" he demanded. He didn't like the sound of that. "He didn't threaten you or touch you did he?" He would kill Mikhail with his bare hands if he hurt his wife or unborn daughter. "You're okay?"

She shook her head. "He bumped into me, but I think that was just to get me to stop without anyone getting suspicious," she explained. "He just said to talk to you. To keep you out of it. That he had a vision and that only Eli was in it so you didn't need to be there," she explained, burying her face against his chest. "He said he wasn't going to hurt me and that he didn't want to," she told her husband. "He said he didn't want to hurt you either, he just wanted you to stay out of it."

Max hugged Jayne gently. "Just so long as you're okay," he murmured. He didn't like Mikhail near his wife or his brother. "Yeah, that's what's bothering me. He wants Elias alone. Which puts the odds way more in his favor. I can't let Eli walk into some trap alone. He's my twin." Jayne and Tabby were just as important to him, but he'd literally killed for Elias. Their own brother even.

"I'm fine," she assured him. "Better now that you're close." Being away from him was not going to happen tonight. She'd perch herself right there in the office or close enough that she could keep an eye on him for the evening. She knew she'd feel much better having him close than being home alone.

She nodded. "I know," she said. "I told him I wasn't making any promises. I don't expect you to stay out of it. I know it's Elias and that you've got to protect him, but I want you safe too. Both of you. Especially now." She let out a breath and reluctantly pulled back from him so she could look up at her husband. "I know that you're going to do what it takes to keep him safe. Just... just keep yourself safe too, alright?"

Yeah, after a near miss like that, Max wanted Jayne close. Goddamn bastard. What kind of animal terrorizes a pregnant woman? There were supposed to be lines, dammit.

Max nodded. "You know I will, Jayne," he assured her. "I have everything to live for. I'll talk to Eli and see what he wants to do." He was starting to lean towards 'find fucker and kill him' but that was probably just because Mikhail had scared Jayne.

Jayne was going to worry until this threat passed. Hell, she was going to worry until the day that she died about those that she loved. Her family. Maybe they weren't conventional like most people's families, but that didn't mean anything. They were her family. That was all that mattered. Their pasts came back to haunt them sometimes, but it didn't make her love them any less. Especially Max. He was the father of her unborn daughter. If anything, her love for him had only quadrupled.

"What do you think he wants?," she asked him. "He didn't even try to touch me," she admitted. "Was... cordial. Thanked me for talking to you. I know hunters can be bullshitter kings, but it was just... odd."

Max sighed. "I don't know, Jayne," he admitted. "The guys seems to be doing his damnedest to keep from me getting anywhere near him. Nothing I have seen or heard from him makes any damn sense. I don't know if he's baiting a trap or messed up and needing our help or if he's just completely nutso." He shook his head. "His reputation's fucking scary. There's rumors he's a demon Rich Johnston bound to himself to finish off the last of the vampires. If that's true, then he could do as much damage as Cameron did. Or more."

The thought that there could be something more dangerous than Cameron made Jayne sick to her stomach. She'd gotten used to the quiet in the last few months. Too used to it, she supposed. Now all hell was threatening to break loose again and she felt almost blindsided by it. The fact that there were so many possibilities of what the man wanted made her more frightened. Maybe it was all a trap and he wanted to get rid of Max and Eli. She couldn't be any more sure than Max could.

"Well, let's hope that's not the case," she said softly, shaking her head a little and curling back into him. "Just when I thought that normal life might actually stick around," she sighed.

Max nodded, wrapping Jayne up tighter in his arms. "It'll be okay, Buttercup," he promised. "You want me to take you home? I can get Brian to close up." While the bar was safe, their house was safer and more comfortable. He could just make some excuse about how Jayne was worried because she was close to her due date, first baby and all. He needed to talk to Eli, but they could do that before they left for home.

She hoped that Max was right, but Jayne knew just how badly this could go. People could die. People that she loved very much. Even if the other man was to die, it wouldn't be a win-lose situation. No matter how things fell, it was likely to be much more lose-lose. She didn't want to think about it. She wanted to curl up and just sleep until it was over, but that wasn't really an option.

His offer to take her home had her nodding her head. "If he doesn't mind closing up," she said. She hated to take Max away from work, but the thought of him being somewhere other than beside her made her sick to her stomach. "You going to talk to Eli first?" She bit her lip. "I can just drive myself back," she offered. "Maybe Brian will let you cut out early?"

Pretty much. There would only be losing less. And they'd still have to get rid of a body. Which hadn't been the first time, but they were trying to leave that part of their lives behind them. Max hadn't had to bury anyone since Alex and he preferred to keep it that way if he could.

"He won't, Princess," Max assured her. "I'll go talk to him, then we'll find Eli and tell him what happened." He kissed Jayne again. "I'll be right back." Easing her into the chair he'd just gotten out of, he kissed his wife one last time before heading out to the bar to talk his bartenders into cover him. Didn't take much or very long, considering the tips and extra pay involved.

A minute or two, Max was back. "Come on, Buttercup," he said as he moved to help her out of his desk chair. "Eli's upstairs. I texted him while I was out there." He really didn't want to plan anything that might upset her in front of her, but he also didn't want to let her out of his sight for long. "Then we'll go home. Eli can drive your car back tomorrow or something."

Jayne didn't want things to get ugly and she certainly didn't want there to be any bodies to get rid of, but she wasn't going to fool herself into believing that it wasn't a possibility. She knew when she married Max that his former life might come up and she didn't regret going through with the wedding. She regretted nothing about their relationship at all, though she wished that he didn't have to keep having his past rear its' ugly head.

She returned the kiss and nodded at his words, settling into the chair and letting out a breath as she watched Max leave the room. It was quiet in the office and she relaxed considerably in the time it took Max to square away his plans. When he returned and helped her back up, she nodded at his explanation. "Alright," she agreed. She wasn't overly worried about her car. It would be fine at the bar and eventually someone could bring it back. "Upstairs we go then," she said. She knew that they had plans to make and it was better that Eli knew what had happened in its entirety.

Max helped Jayne up the short flight of stairs to what used to be their apartment. He didn't knock, Eli would have heard them coming a mile and a half away. He got his wife settled on the sofa before he turned to his brother to explain. "Mikhail cornered Jayne tonight," he told Eli. "She said he asked her to keep me out of whatever he wanted with you."

With Jayne settled on the sofa, Eli folded his arms across his chest and looked at Max as he started to speak. He blinked at the words that came out of his twin's mouth, uncertain of what to say first. The fact that Mikhail was warning people off of the situation was confusing. Normally, a hunter wouldn't have given a damn about who might be involved. "So he's warning people to stay away?," he said, eyes on his brother for another moment before flicking to Jayne. She didn't appear to be hurt in any way and if she had been, Max would have probably already found the guy and killed him.

"Think it's a trap?," he asked, his eyes moving back to Max again. "Baiting me to be alone so he can end me or baiting you to come with so he can get us both?"

"Sounds like it," he said. "Jayne said he was 'polite' about it. Which is just fucking bizarre." Max sat down next to his wife. "I don't know, bro. Nothing this guy has done makes any fucking sense." He sighed. "You might have to try to get a vision about him. Maybe we can find out what he 'saw' that he thinks he needs to have a showdown with you." He sighed. "We can go where he talked to Jayne, if that'll help?" That had worked with the demon, after all.

"Polite?," Eli said, glancing at Jayne.

She nodded. "He kept asking me to talk to Max and to convince him. Saying "please" and things like that. Said that he didn't want to hurt me or to hurt Max. His business was with you and he didn't want Max getting involved in it." Her stomach churned and she leaned into Max the moment he sat down, resting her head against his shoulder and curling both of her arms around one of his.

Eli shook his head. That didn't make any sense at all. Politely warning away Max, telling Raj to stay out of it and not killing him just on the grounds of being a wolf, the fact that he hadn't done anything yet. It all didn't make sense and Eli started to pace. "Yeah," he agreed with his brother. "It can't hurt. Maybe something can trigger a vision. I can't figure out what his plans are if he's not giving me anything but confusing information. A vision is about the only ace in the hole I might have."

"None of it makes sense," he agreed, wrapping Jayne up in his arms, one hand resting on her belly. Max was more afraid than he could ever let on. He never wanted Jayne or Tabby to get hurt because of his past. Even though he knew it could happen.

Max nodded. "Okay," he said. "You drive Jayne's car and I'll have her show us the spot. We can see if you get anything, and if so, we'll figure out where to go from here. If not, well, we'll think of something."

Eli's eyes followed his twin's fingertips to Jayne's stomach. It figured as goddamn much that their bullshit past was going to come rearing its' head the moment that Jayne was so close to her due date he could practically hear the clock ticking. It made him sick to his stomach.

He nodded a little at Max's idea. "Alright," he agreed. It was really the only shot that they had at finding something that might give them some sort of clue as to what was going on. If he could get even the smallest read, it would be better than nothing at all. He just hoped he could pick up on some sort of clue. If not, well, they'd cross that bridge when they got there.
