What am I, what will I be.
Who: Mary Little and Riley Poe
What:Mary succumbs to curiosity and starts reading up on what she suspects she might be.
When: Late afternoon, early evening June 21st
Where: Outside her trailer enjoying the evening coolness.
Rating: Most probably low.
Status: Complete

Mary had been scouring all the materials she could find about supernatural creatures. Not only had wikiapedia failed her, it had also contradicted itself so many times that she had become agitated with it. She finally took up a book she had found in a store and was flipping through it on the door step just outside her trailer. Wrapped in a sweater and enjoying the last of the afternoon sun while she read she pondered not only herself but her new situation.

She'd come so far from New York and her life there. Here she was free. But now she wasn't human anymore. Scratch that. She had never been human, but now she knew it for herself. Now the only question was of what. Pandora had told her, yes, but she didn't want to believe her. Not for a moment.

Though wouldn't it be proof that God (or the devil) had a sense of humor? Putting that kind of power in this tiny little form? Useless, she felt. Useless and wasted. So instead of focusing on that particular form she was looking at different ones. Nothing had shown much promise and she was getting frustrated and it showed on her face she flipped through the book once more, looking over the pages she had marked, trying to guess.

Riley was, as usual, being a nosy little brat who was everywhere he oughtn't be; he had no concept of personal space, invitation-only, or any other such thing.

As a result he was nursing a snow cone, his sweet tooth running rampant today as he licked the frozen treat and wandered among the trailers, stopping only when he saw someone he didn't know particularly well. Oh, he'd seen her, of course; he barked for the freak tent, and he knew her name, everything about her that he had to tell the crowd. But he hadn't had much chance to talk to her outside of work, and well, to the social-butterfly little puck, that was simply inexcusable.

"Pleasure or homework?" he asked amiably in regards to the book she was studying, swaggering a bit in his approach, confident that she'd recognize the handsome devil who talked her up every night to the marks. "How's it going, Mary?"

Mary was startled a moment as the puck strolled along up to her. She did recognize him, but not just from the fact that he barked her name at people. No, she remembered him from the first night she was here. He had been the nosy one.

"I guess you could call it homework. Though I don't really know why I'm bothering." Closing the book, she sighed, leaning an elbow on the book too blue eyes turning up to watch Riley with interest.

"Better then it usually is. For me any way." Though frustrating as hell, not only because she couldn't figure this out but also because Riley was very good looking and she felt something click inside her as it always seemed to when she was around someone she was attracted to. A clicking which disturbed her, made her hungry, her scent in the air changing a bit, not powerful enough for a normal nose but soft and vanilla-musk as if she were wearing a light spray of perfume though she had nothing on.

Riley inhaled slightly, then arched his brow at her a bit more severely but said nothing. He took another bite of his sno-cone, then dropped it into the nearest trash bin, moving over to her once more and folding his arms over his chest.

"Well, what are you reading that could possibly be homework?" he asked curiously. "The Story of O? I have that in my trailer if you care to borrow," he teased. "Got quite a library along those lines. And I'd be happy to help you study."

"The Story of O?...I don't know what that is. But I'm sure it can't be anything good. And it's not the type of research I'm currently up to." Mary held up the book for him to see. It was an encyclopedia of supernatural creatures.

"Trying to figure things out." It was as simple as that. And as difficult as that.

"The Story of O is a fabulous erotica about domination. You really should check it out, it's one of my go-to reading materials when I have to go to bed alone," he said with a teasing smile, then looked curiously at the book cover.

"Oh, love. You aren't going to find those answers in a book. What is it you want to know? If it's at this carnival and worth knowing, I'm the one who knows it."

Mary went pink at the explanation. "Well, if I ever feel that lonely, I'll come find you."Which was to say, heck no I am never that lonely.

"You;ll probably think it's stupid." She sighed. She thought it was pretty stupid. Why should she care what manner of supernatural creature she was? Because it kept haunting her and she didn't want to have that niggling question in her mind any more, that's why.

"I'm trying to figure out what I am. I have an idea...but I'm not completely convinced." Or willing to accept it.

"What's your idea, pumpkin?" he asked curiously, tilting his head to the side to study her closely. He could rule out several things simply by the powers of deduction; Riley had been around for centuries and had met nearly one of every kind of supernatural being that wasn't some weird hybrid or new strain of evolutionary miracle. He liked to think he was a bit more open-minded than say, Jael, the ever-jaded djinn.

"Do tell and I can probably help. I'm a cryptozoology expert, trust me."

Mary gave the puck a hard look for a moment and smirked. "With a face like that, I don't think any one should trust you. Not for very long anyway." She leaned back on her steps for a moment, stretching for a moment, the soft, subtle curves of her small form more apparent then when she had been sitting there hunched over her book.

"Well, it wasn't my idea...someone, someone I wouldn't trust, told me I was a succubus. And I find that ridiculous. So I scratched that idea and have been looking into other things." Because other things were easier to handle then being what she suspected.

"Oh yeah? Someone told you you were a succubus," he repeated, arching his brows. "Well, I have to tell you, you're like the travel-sized version of one. Have you talked to Judas about it? I'm sure he could help you out, him being one and all. They usually recognize their own."

He smiled at her, a little flourish. "I'm a puck, if that helps. You probably won't find me in your little book there."

"A demon told me to be exact. Which is why I wasn't too keen on listening." No normal kid was like that kid had been. And this was a supernatural carnival after all. All sorts of things wandering around. "Judas?" She hadn't yet met the guy, maybe she should seek him out.

"Puck? Like in Midsummer Nights Dream? That puck? Well, it's no wonder then. You have that trickster air about you. Telling me to trust you." Her smirk took on a flirty air. "Like a wolf telling a lamb to trust it."

"Well, maybe, prettybaby, you should find someone reliable to ask. Demons lie," he said smoothly, "and pucks lie when we're inclined... djinn can't lie though, they aren't capable. So maybe ask Jael. She'd tell you the truth, she doesn't have a choice."

He shook his head. "Or Arkady, or Judas. Damn, girl, there's a million people who could help you besides a demon. And if you mean a demon at this carnival, I'm gonna guess you mean Pandora. She's a handful."

He smirked a bit when her tone took on that playfully flirty manner, and he inclined his head slightly. "Guilty as charged. I'm pleased to see my reputation precedes me."

"Arkady couldn't figure me out. Or if he knew he didn't feel inclined to mention. Which makes me think it's something terrible." Asking something that can't lie would work, however.

"Tell me about it, not only that but she nearly had the angel believing I was in league with her. Not even sure if I'm convinced I'm not a demon in some form or another." But she certainly hadn't taken possession of a body. This was all her's and always had been and while she wasn't comfortable with it most of the time, it was her's an the only thing she owned outright.

"Well, there is a whole play about you and your kind. I always imagined you...shorter though."

"I'll bite my tongue to refrain from pointing out the irony of that comment," Riley said playfully, shaking his head at her in a chiding sort of way. "But I'm glad to know that my name is known in your mind. Most of what you've heard is undoubtedly true, the good and the bad... unless the bad came from Vered. He's a liar and he's got a tiny dick."

This last delivered with a dazzling smile, not a hint of venom anywhere but the words themselves.

"Find Jael and ask. Or even Hope, she's a fortune teller and hasn't got a dishonest bone in her body. They're more trustworthy than me to you, I'm sure. As for the angel, he's all bark and... well, a few bites, I suppose," Riley chuckled, "but he doesn't truck with demons. You can imagine."

"I know you by face too. I saw you the first night I was here. Apparently you were going off to tell everyone the tiny woman had arrived." A finger curled into her blonde hair twirling the strands in her finger tips. "I haven't actually heard much about you, the person. I'll at least believe you are a fairly wicked puck. But a kind one." And a fairly attractive one at that. She could feel the want in her rising and she had to force herself not to react to it.

"I'll look into my options. You've given me so many..." She laughed a bit as he mentioned Gar. "He was a bit much. But nice in his own "I don't need this shit" way." She was thoughtful for a moment. "Strange to be in a place like this. Where people are nice." And nice to look at. She was so used to being felt up by creepy weirdos she had almost forgot what it felt like to be attracted to someone.

"I make it a point to meet everyone when they arrive. I'm sort of a one-man welcome wagon if you get my drift. You always have to know the company you keep, don't you?" he asked with mock innocence, as if he was merely doing his job by being a nosy little git.

"Where are you from that people aren't nice? Arkady has a law here, really only the one. He knows everyone here has different natures... some of us are nice in general, some would eat each other if they were in the outside world. But under Arkady's protection and in the sanctity of this carnival, everyone's family. No one's allowed to hurt anybody, and he really doesn't even have a high threshold for people being mean in general. He wants us to be a big family, as bonded by loyalty as regular blood relatives are." He shrugged. "Works out okay. Keeps us from getting lonely. And trust me, you'll rarely be bored."

"I suppose it's a good thing to know your new family members." After all, Arkady had said they were a family here, and it was only right that they should get to know their neighbors.

"Originally? New York. Not a friendly people, over all. It's not the city of brotherly love anyway. It's the city of "GET THE HELL OUT." But it was home for a long time." She had liked the idea of this being a family. Everyone looking out for each other.

"It's a nice idea. But I can see how it might not work. How can you be expected to trust those who might trick, maim or otherwise murder you out there in the real world? It's a lot to ask." It was at least a lot to ask of her for her complete trust in these people.

"It is. You have to get to know them all. They're characters," Riley grinned. "And you can only imagine how truly... diverse they can be. How entertaining."

He touched his chin thoughtfully. "New York is a fabulous city, but yes, the people aren't known for their warmth usually. Their solidarity, yes, though. I've always enjoyed my time there, but I rarely left Manhattan."

Riley ruffled his own hair, the expensive product in it keeping it looking handsomely disheveled. "I'm most certainly not arguing with you that some of the more unsavory people here might do something untowards in the real world, but trust me, Mary... no one would dare on these grounds."

"Not everyone is the social butterfly that you are, Mr. Puck, but I'll try to meet a fair few." It was hard for her to get out there and meet people usually, but she was finally understanding that this place truly was a haven. Still, she was apprehensive.

"Manhattan is nice. Good for everything really. I spent much of my time on Broadway. My mother was an actress so we were in every theater up town and down town." Downtown especially when her mother's career started to fail. Her own fingers twined into her hair for a moment to twirl the golden strands around the delicately small digits before letting it fall through her fingers again.

"I guess I'm just overly cautious." Life had taught her that much.

"Ah, cautious and shy and skittish... those things will never fly here," Riley said sagely. "You have to dive in with both feet.. carpe diem, my little friend. Just learn to run with it. If you are what you suspect that you are--- and I suspect that you are, too, though the bite-sized version of one--- then you will learn all too quickly about strangers and the very wonderful services they can offer your wellbeing."

He grinned playfully at her, then cocked his head. "I should take my leave, let you get back to your reading." Go tell people that I think you're a succubus.

"It's kept me alive this long." Not that she wouldn't just walk up to some people and say something, but that wasn't being nice and trying to make friends. No, she was poor at making friends.

"I'll try to follow your shining example, but only so far." She wouldn't even entertain the idea of her succubi-ness, not right now. She didn't even want to think about it and yet the thought kept cropping up. "Right, well, thank you for the help." She picked up her book again and stood up stretching on her stoop.

"Enjoy the rest of your evening." Mary realized it was useless to tell him not to tell anyone about her, after all, he was a puck and he was going to do what he wanted to do, despite objections.

"Good evening, darling," he told her, bowing deeply in his most chivalrous way and tipping an invisible hat. "I wish you well, and if ever you find yourself with a need for good company... you can find me."

He turned with that, grinning ear to ear as he headed on his way.
