Who: Rayna & Aden
What:
When: A sunny afternoon in Dallas
Where: Outside the carnival grounds
Rating: Low
The morning had dawned hot and clear--in the high nineties, according to the weather report--thick with the sickly sweet aromas of honeysuckle and diesel fuel, and ringing with birdsong and the calling of voices back and forth across the carnival grounds as the maintenance crews and roadies set up for the day. A hundred yards off from the bustle, Rayna had set up her yoga mat, her breakfast--yogurt, fruit, and sweet bread--and her mp3 dock, which was currently amplifying the haunting, melodious sounds of Kelly Sweet. There was also a pile of fruit as high as her hip, looking a little bruised and brown in places, set out on the ground in front of her, but she wasn't paying it any attention. Her eyes were closed, her breathing even, the stretch and pull of her muscles rhythmic and strong. She'd been doing sun salutations since dawn, and a fine sheen of sweat glistened against her coconut dusted skin.
As the sun climbed higher and higher into the sky, shifting from a fiery orange to a radiant yellow, the moisture on Rayna's arms and legs began to sizzle like oil on a hot stove. Steam began to rise, swirling in the air around her, and as she lifted her hands heavenward one last time, the space between them erupted in a burst of fire. Grinning triumphantly, Rayna cradled it confidently in mid air, kneeling down in front of the giant pile of overripe and early rotted fruit and plunging her fingers into the heart of the mess. The fire caught and seemed to take on new life, flaring green as it licked along rinds and skins and husks, roaring through the lot and, wherever it touched, erasing the signs of disease and imperfection. It grew steadily weaker as it worked, and when the lasts markers of rot were gone, leaving behind ripe, delicious food, ready to eat, it gave a faint pop, and vanished.
Panting and smiling, Rayna collapsed backwards onto the ground, reaching her arms towards the sun. "Hallelujah," she laughed.
