Alec gave a belly laugh at the thought of carnival children passing through cul-de-sacs, goggling out the windows of cars or vans at the rows of orderly houses and identically trimmed hedges, the cars in driveways and garages and the dogs in back fences.
"I imagine carnival children are the luckiest in the world, because they get to grow up surrounded by magic and things that other children could only dream of seeing," Alec said after he had laughed himself out. "Carnival children are the saviors of the world, in fact, because their open minds and free thinking are a rare thing these days, and should be highly prized."
