If it was even possible for the world to spontaneously tilt in such a way that it was obvious then Julian was pretty sure it had just happened to him. He really should have been used to it by now, but he wasn’t. Especially with the emotionally charged objects that passed from innate hands to live wires clad in skin and enveloped by flesh. It wasn’t particularly old, but it was significant. Significant for him to feel the unsettling dip of where the world shifted and his stomach did several flips, bringing up the acrid taste of bile and God only knew what else.
Honestly, he probably should have looked twice at a knife with a silver decoration that curled around the base and had a fleck of a suspiciously red mark around its tip, but he hadn’t been paying that much attention given his foul mood and otherwise surly disposition.
What? He’d been having bad days as of late.
It packed a punch and he had to claw his way above the rising tide of panic that threatened to consume him, eyes shifting restlessly beneath closed lids, fingers twitching and focus narrowing to the tip. It took less than a second for the deep sheen of the colour to flood his vision, what vision he had, and Julian inhaled sharply as he heard a sound, a soft distinctly wet sound, reminiscent of what a hot knife through butter might sound like if you were the butter.
Holy shit.
Julian’s attention snapped back like a barely used elastic band and the world swam shockingly into focus and he was pretty sure had he not been standing with the owner of the knife he might have lost the contents of his stomach. Not that you could really call gum and fries as a meal worth shedding tears over, but still. The knife was unceremoniously shoved back into clammy hands of its owner and Julian shook his head. “No sale,” he managed, voice barely louder than a whisper.
“What?” The guy asked, looking genuinely shocked.
“I said,” Julian gritted out between his teeth. “No sale.” His eyes were dark and narrowed in the corners. “Now, fuck off.”
The guy looked like he was about to argue, but after having caught the look on Julian’s eyes he changed his mind and turned on his heel. It didn’t take long for the knife to be hidden in the pocket of his coat and Julian could only watch on as the man disappeared into the crowd.
Julian’s stomach gave another turn for the worst and he ducked around the back to dry cough and hunch over, hands on his knees, just trying to gather his breath and put his metaphorical shit together again.
